Am I really a dick?

Firstly, what parent(s), after learning their child has cancer sends out a chain text asking for money? Secondly, what parents, truly worried for the well being of their child, would send such a text with emoticons? Thirdly, why would they insult you for not falling into what is 95% certainly a trap? Based on these three things I would say you are not a dick, at least from my perspective.

Why would you even say "no, thanks"? It just makes it look worse.

I usually delete any messages when I see the topic "this is not a..." or when I read first line and it is not about what the message will be about or stated subject.

It's an annoying thing people do. Such messages have to naturally partially fail. You don't take everything seriously when walking across the street where some drunkard's yelling. And internet is no excuse for real person's avatars.

Here's a quick and easy test to see if you are a dick or not. (Wish I could put it into Flowchart form)

STEP 1. Check if there are any short curly hairs on your feet, if yes, go to 2. If no, you are not a dick
STEP 2. Check if your head secrets a clear or white liquid, If yes then proceed to step 3. If no, you are not a dick.
STEP 3. Check to see if you grow bigger if you rub your mid section If yes, you are a dick, If no, you are not a dick, but should probably see a doctor about the whole head thing.

In my experience people who have to ask "Am I a Dick?" usually are. In this case I don't think so. You felt the whole thing was a prank and replied in a civil manner. The only thing I will say and just about everyone in this thread has said it already, why reply? Ignore the text and no one would have been the wiser.

It sounds to me like the same thing going on nowadays with the new "liking comments" feature on Youtube. People tend to ride the bandwagon and do whatever it takes to get a thumbs up, because it inflates their ego.

This is the same thing with the chain emails. Honestly, a parent who has a dying kid and first reaction is "Got it, I'll send a chain email that will somehow get me money", doesnt exactly sound completely realistic to me.

But then again, there is some vague chance that they were sponsored to do a chain email-

I don't forward these texts, and the people I love haven't died yet. (YET- my dad is going in for surgery this Friday.) I ignore all the ones that say, "If you don't forward this, then you don't love God." God loves ALL his children. (my family is religious, lol.) Those text messages are fake, but I do know of one about a missing child awhile back. His picture was in a magazine of mugshots & he was missing for awhile.

So some texts might be real, & most are fake. Absolutely NO MONEY from your bill goes toward ANY foundation if you forward it unless it's a government-sponsored organization, like they did with Haiti. So don't feel guilty about not forwarding that text, and no, you aren't a dick, cuz then I'm one too (though I'm a girl...) xD

A fellow classmate died in my grade. I never really knew this girl, and nor did I particularly care for her. When she passed away, the school tried to sell patches for 10 dollars a pop. If it was like, a dollar or something, I would've done it, but 10 dollars? The family wasn't even accepting the money so where the fuck was that going to? I didn't buy one, does that make me a dick?
