I just thought of somthing that is kind of weird. 50% of the time America goes to war with someone(Iraq, Germany, ect) after we beat the living s@#! out of them, we turn around and send them aid. Do any other countries do this?

Most countries don't go to war as often as we do I don't think, but most nations would give aid after defeating their opponent. It is a lesson learned after WWI. Germany was left to its own devices after being defeated in WWI so they were in bad shape. Their economy plummeted, there were no jobs, and a lot of German citizens were still pretty angry about losing the war. Hitler took advantage of this and promised to end the depression and create new jobs, and the German people were all too willing to listen to him. After WWII, the Allies made sure to rebuild Germany in hopes of preventing that same outcome.

Damn, someone already beat me to the Versailles explanation.

Because rehabilitating a country and getting them on your side is cheaper than genociding the entire populace, burning everything down, and sowing the earth with salt.

As Carthage charmingly pointed out, they will otherwise be back and be very pissed.

No it's two continents, but we call the US America because lets face it, it's obviously the most important area in all of America.
Canada's better..

When have america beaten 'the living s@#!' out of someone? That would suggest an easy win.

We all know that the U.S.A. =/= America, but nevertheless America is shorthand for the U.S.A.

Trying to avoid any moral judgment either way, as that is obviously not the point of this thread: it's a matter of practicality. Sane wars are fought for a better peace. In this age, that often means maintaining stability in post-war and other regions. So America tries to ensure that.

I understand the WW1 example, but I think that you misunderstand the what exactly the Germans were mad about. Germany and Austria offered an Armistice, not a surrender. They offered to call it a tie and just stop fighting. They were defeated in the logistics, because Britain, France, Russia and Germany's other enemies forced Germany to accept responcibility for the war, even though they didn't actually start it. Germany didn't technically lose; they couldn't actually win if they kept fighting, but if they had fought to the bitter end, it would have been unclear who actually won. They weren't angry about "losing," so much as they were angry about being blamed for a conflict in which all parties involved were equally responcible.

And to TheGhostOfSin: Iraq's official military fell to our assault quite quickly and could be considered an "easy win." However I don't think that "beating the living $@#%" out of another country implies an easy win, so much as inflicting excessive damage to an enemy. WW2 in the Pacific wasn't an easy win, but we still beat the hell out of the Japanese. We damn near incinerated every major city they had. Hiroshima was chosen for the atomic bomb because we hadn't fire bombed it like the other cities, so it was relatively intact.

If Canadians/Mexicans/Brazilians/etc. want to be called Americans too, they should change their country's name to include "America." Writing "citizen of the United States of America" just takes too much time. If a country's name is Canada, the citizens are then called Canadians.

One solution to the problem would be to call Americans USAese, USese or USAians.

Exactly. In both cases, you/us were either to arrogant/stupid to take the necessary actions.

I was referring to "That 70's show", where Red objects to one girl who said US lost in Vietnam.

Did you know that there are more topics on the Escapist about wars that america has been involved in than there are actual wars america has been involved in? Totally true fact.

Iraq, we pretty much tore through Saddam's forces, its the peacekeeping that is giving us all the trouble.
