Now I was in my media arts computer class today and I did my normal habit of things. I log into my hotmail and check my emails and the come onto the escapist to see what?s happening. Now, since I begun coming on this in august I would use this site as a source of entertainment during computer classes and the eventual spare. Just today on this very day I go to check up on escapist feeling like doing no work to find out my school blocked this site! How angry I was to find out a site I have been using since august or in school terms, since September blocked for the reason they say as ?forums? I almost broke into tears, yep that is right, almost put my fist through the monitor screen too. Why are they blocking this for forums though? Isn?t that just a maddening thing?

Have some comments my air escapist friends or do you have a similar thing happen to you at work or at school.

They do it in a lot of schools. They blocked lots of gaming sites in my school so yeah. I just tended to clear my cache/history/cookies everytime i was done with my session so nothing would go wrong. But something always would. They'd always find a way to block everything. To be honest you shouldn't be suprised. You're not there to talk about gaming, and to procrastinate, and that kinda stuff SO THEY WOULD SAY.

My school did this all the time, for the most ridiculous of reasons. We couldn't even use google because it was deemed 'offensive'.
So I know just how frustrating it can be...

They did the same thing to me. There are plenty of ways around it. Proxy sites, for example.

Yeah, one of my schools, (I go to 2 schools every day, I take a special class at this one), they block literally everything. If it relates to the human body, blocked due to pornography. Game sites are all banned, The Escapist included. Proxies are also banned. "Joke" sites, blogs, free web hosts, video sites, you name it, it's all blocked. It's so bad that even my teacher wants us to find a way to get around it. I have a list of proxy sites that I want to try out and see if one's not blocked. Your best bet is to try that and see if that works.

What you guys don't know is that all schools in the world are competing to see which can have the most redundant internet by having free internet, but then blocking every site that's even mildly useful or entertaining.

Hate to say this, I get grief rom my pupils all the time...why has this been blocked? why has this game site been blocked? etc etc etc. My answer: You are in school to learn, not to play games, its not a bleeding holiday camp. :D

I was once doing research for a debate in Public Speaking. The debate was on abortion (I was against banning it). So, I typed "abortion arguments" into google, hit the first reputable looking site, and its blocked. Reason: Abortion. Fail.

It's because a lot of school don't want kids screwing around on their computers. If you can't get on to proxy sites, someone is doing their job correctly.

I found it amusing and ironic that on one occasion, my art teacher was looking for an image related to Greek Mythology on a school computer, only for the image to be blocked.

I'm finding it really hard, not to gloat about my online classes.

Anyway, they block it for one simple reason, which has already been pointed out.

Tuff break though. Glad I don't have to worry about that. No, bad butter.

They blocked it at your school because they realized that you were spending too much time messing around online, and not enough time learning to spell the word "involve."

If you are truly determined to get to whatever site you want to visit you can, as has already been pointed out, find an unblocked proxy, one is bound to be unblocked. About wikipedia, the only thing on wikipedia that is blocked at our school is the "did you mean" function because it is considered a... forum?

Yeah, personally, I don't mind if things like game sites are blocked, but they block the stupidest things. Try to research "violence in the media" and it blocks the Google results because of "Violence." It wouldn't be as bad if they actually bothered to block actual bad websites. One day, somebody actually set the homepage of a computer to Kids In A Sandbox I believe. It was unblocked of course. -.-
