Good, the quick people get over the mediocrity of the Call of Duty franchise, the quicker better games can get more publicity.

The whole battle field series is better than the COD series by far, and i doubt that battle field will turn into the next call of duty, mainly because the next game is battle field 3 and most likely wont be on consoles.

Why now must they be ruthlessly pitted against each other in a battle to the death?
Because the current gaming climate is focused on the mega-franchise. There can be only one.
this climate is a DIRECT result of ppl paying attention to market analysts.

seriously Escapist, stop posting this garbage, you're supposed to be about GAMES and GAMERS, not economic markets and analysts.

You forgot the part where it's about the games INDUSTRY.
And there is nothing at all that is more significant to the games that come out than market effects and conditions.

People can talk about gameplay being better, story being better, but the one thing that actually matters in the long run?

Sales.

This is silly. BBC:2 wont be able to kill COD.

That's not to say that COD is the better game in any way. I have not played MW2, I will never play MW2. And I loves me some Battlefield.

No, I am implying that there is nothing for BBC:2 to kill. I'm fairly certain COD started dying the instant Activision started having a pissing contest with West and Zampella over who could suck the most cock in one day make the most ridiculous claim about the others activities.

When you have a high profile corporate assassination of the heads of your most successful franchise maker, and then continue with a high profile legal battle, followed by some of your top talent leaving your company, your product is in trouble.

It's pretty obvious CoD reached its peak with MW2, Activision seems poised to kick CoD into hyperproduction, they already have 3 studios working on new CoD titles, and that'll probably dilute the fanbase quite a bit(and the quality of the series as well).

But I doubt Battlefield will kill it. The next one up is Battlefield 3, which has only been confirmed on the PC up till now, and will probably be more like BF2 than BF:BC2, with even more focus on teamplay and giant maps, and you can't get the CoD run&gun crowd with that.

The revamped MoH seems to be aiming for that crowd though, but as nothing really is known yet on the multiplayer(except that it won't be a BC2 clone) it's difficult to tell where it's going.

That being said I do think the Bad Company subseries of BF has the perfect blend of epicness of Battlefield and pure fun action of CoD and certainly has a very bright future.

thank you for illustrating my point so perfectly.

it's a sad state of affairs when sales is "what actually matters" to gamers.

Probably not so much to gamers, no. But to the companies that make them, yes. And thus, it's extremely relevant information for gamers who are genuinely interested in their hobby.

I kinda agree with you, but these market analysts have a huge impact on the games market now that games are officially Big Business, and there's nothing the Escapist can do about it. And since the Escapist doesn't just report about games, but also everything surrounding it, be it lifestyle, culture, legal issues, or economic matters, it'd be a bit silly if they chose to ignore stuff like this. It might not always be a good thing for us gamers, but closing your eyes to it won't do anyone any good.
