I'm watching this really interesting show on the History Channel that examines theories of aliens visiting Earth in the distant past and having an influence on human evolution. Some of the more wild and interesting ideas are that humans were genetically altered by the aliens to be a slave race, used to mine gold, which may be an important component of starships. And that gods and creatures from ancient mythology that combine animal and human parts were real hybrid creatures created in experiments conducted by the aliens.

I'm not sure if I believe it all or not - I try to keep an open mind, but a lot of this stuff is quite bizarre. In any case, it's interesting - I'm really enjoying the show.

What do you guys think? Are these sorts of things possible, or just a load of crap? Are there any crazy and/or interesting theories in the same vein you'd like to share?

I think it's a load of crap. I don't think we've ever been visited by aliens. If we had, we'd know it by now.

I am leaning towards the load of crap. Steven Hawking believes that if we ever actually do encounter extraterrestrial life it would most likely kill us. I am going with one of the smartest men of our generation and say that we haven't had any contact yet.

Of course its possible, whether it actually happened or not is something we'll find out when they come back and wonder why all their gold is being worn as jewellry if they were here at all that is.

My favourite creation stories were always the ones where aliens made us or visited us in the past.

When Xenu escapes, you will be the first to die.

I agree with you though: the idea is a load of bollocks.

I figured this thread would be about that History Channel thing since I was watching it earlier :p

OT, I don't know, I'm not convinced that all those paintings and shit are proof aliens came here, but I'm also not convinced they never did.

Until I see aliens first hand, I won't have a solid answer.

I am a former Catholic, and these theories on this show are no more far fetched and fantastic then any other creation theory, excpt it attempts to use scientific evidence instead of superstition as proof.

Good show though.

From what I've seen, most shows on the History channel will always twist anything to make it sound like they support bizarre and crazy theories. So no, I don't buy most of the things I hear on the History channel. It's lost a lot of credibility to me, even these are just mean to be "theories".

Personally I don't think any humans have ever encountered aliens. If they have visited Earth, we don't know about it. Just because the people in ancient times thought bizarre and crazy things does not mean they were the product of aliens. I just don't get why aliens supposedly visited humans in ancient times and then suddenly stopped doing so. As for the idea of aliens creating humans as a slave race, well that's just silly. Why would they let us advance mentally if we are just supposed to be slaves?

How is Hawkings any more credible when it comes to aliens than any other human? He may be smart, but extraterrestrial life is a complete unknown. He knows nothing about it. Nobody those. So I'm not going to value what he thinks about above anyone elses opinion.

I'm astounded that a channel that's supposed to be devoted to physical history, would show shlock like that. And before the "anything-is-possible" crowd shows up, I'd like to say, "but, most things are so highly improbable that they might as well be impossible."

Fascinating show. Didn't believe a word of it =D

I have to think that we are not alone in the universe and Prof. Hawkings recent remarks did dismay me somewhat - the assumption that any other intelligent life would be predatory and aggressive and prone to plunder because that is who we are as a species was a bit depressing to say the least

I'm not saying we've absolutely never been visited by aliens, but it's highly improbable that we have.

The "ancient astronauts" theories are entirely founded on overly-fancy speculations with not a single speck of real evidence supporting them.

Probably not, but if they did, chances are that they would have arrived so long ago that no evidence would be left.

I'll believe it when I can touch an alien skeleton or the equivalent.
I tend to side with Stephen Hawking on this type of issue, though, in the sense that the most likely result of an alien visit would be annihilation.

They didn't, and you know how I know? They didn't come to me, worshipping me as their god.

But, on a more serious note, I don't think aliens visited us. They didn't come to help us, hurt us, enslave us, kill us, sleep with our women, any of that. It was just a bunch of guys who misinterpreted skeletal remains.

Do you also believe that the great pyramids were the worlds largest catalytic microwave earth resonance fusion generators/ laser communicators? Because thats what that show said when i watched it.

TOTAL crackpots.

Obelisks are not tesla towers. Get a real job.

The show does try to give evidence to back up all the claims. For instance, when talking about human genetic manipulation, they talked about this strand of DNA that is completely unique to humans, and may have been supplied by the aliens. To me, the show seems to have some element of veracity - the people on it aren't just nutjobs. I'm not saying it's all totally true, but I won't dismiss it outright, either.

I saw a show that said aliens helped Mayans and Egyptians invent pyramids, and primitive planes (that were apparantly never used).

The only thing I heard of was the alien influence on the Mayans. And Scientology. But really, that stuff is pretty weird/cool. What's it called?

I guess the catch-all term would just be "Ancient Aliens" or maybe "Ancient Astronauts".

Some other really interesting ideas they've presented -

quartz crystal has actually been shown to be a great medium to store data on, so the famed crystal skulls may be ancient data drives, just waiting to be unlocked somehow.

"Aliens" are not actually aliens at all, but just highly-evolved humans from the distant future. Their spaceships are actually time machines.

I think that Space is a pretty massive place and to think that we're the ONLY "intelligent" life out there is pretty ridiculous... not sure if we've been bred to be slaves but if Aliens can travel through space/time I imagine it's a possibility
