Okay so for awhile now there has been this show called ancient aliens which got its own special on History channel then spawned a tv show that is just wrapping it 3rd season.

If youve never watched an episode it can be summed up like this "Aliens have visited us in the past, it explains this",
"I cant explain it, therefore aliens" or "ancient peoples art/stories convey spacemen/craft, therefore aliens"

Most of all this "phenomenon" can be accredited to the "book" "Chariots of The Gods"
written by Erich von Däniken and his other "works", which have all unsurprisingly been criticized by scientists as pseudohistory and pseudoarchaeology, otherwise known commonly as "bullshit".

The star of the show, besides various guests brought on (from wtfing university or miserable excuse of a job that they can fancy up to sound professional cause obviously they have nothin better to do) to speak for whatever fucking topic you can explain with "aliens" is this douche

Giorgio A. Tsoukalos, which I think/hope is greek for douchebag. With a degree in sports information and communication who would ever question his knowledge on history and extraterrestrials, Im sure he knows what hes talking about. What Im not so sure about is if my eyeballs will rollback into place every time I hear him speak.

But I know what your thinking, whats the point of this thread besides ranting. Well Ill tell you, this thread was inspired by the sheer frustration and anger of visiting the ancient aliens facebook page and seeing several comments of "when are people gonna wakeup" or the worst "this is a really good show". And not to mention the laughable, I mean lovable people who believe this shit and combine it with there religion as in saying these were false prophets fallen from heaven" or better yet atheism "this totally makes more sense then what those stupid Christians believe.

Hopefully you've figured out what kind of thread this is now. If not I guess I should tell before someone says aliens did it. This humbly is the ever popular on the escapist I have lost my faith in humanity thread. The show never brings anything to the table discrediting any of this(which if you could guess is a lot), only things to say "eh could be?". It is serious and the people who believe it are also. I ask you visit that page I visited and see if you do not face palm and have to fight the urge to troll.

So for discussion, please tell me your view on ancient aliens(the show or real).

The show actually does something useful except blame everything on invisible skydaddy, it exposes small fragments of abnormal historical artifacts which shows the public that we probably didn't all ''live in caves'' 5000 years ago.

One of my favourite hypotheses is the one where someone claims that Khufu's pyramid was a microwave beam emitter.
What would you use a practically fixed microwave beam for?

Duh, to call the ancient alien overlords that didn't show up to conquer us until then because that would be rude. How could you even ask?

A friend of mine has been using screen caps of this show.

Every day, he thinks up a new caption or gets one of us to do it, for example: "Why did the chicken cross the road? Aliens", and sends it to a friend at the same time every day.

He's been doing this for 3 months

His Origin ID is even Mr. Tsoukalos. A few people have friended him for it.

I believe that aliens have been around since pre-historic times, and have visited Earth, and still do, on multiple occasions, even communicating through psychic waves. They seem to have very cryptic motives... =/

I think this show, With pawn stars, American pickers and american restoration shows just how far The history channel has fallen
But i also think that there is possibility of aliens coming. Just not EVERYTHING you can prove means its aliens.

I like it in fiction, but I absolutely facepalm when someone takes it seriously. It makes me a sad panda future archaeologist.

I watched some episodes of the series (the ones I was interested in), and while the show is not horribly done, I don't think it should be on something called "History Channel" and should be far less vague. They don't force the opinion about it being true, but running for three seasons and leaving the question open every time are not good signs. The show being somewhat scientifically done is both good and bad, bad being the fact that some people might take it as a done deal and avoid to accept anything else. There were some interesting facts, but everything can be explained without aliens. Bringing aliens into the story raises so many questions that I'd need five thousand pages to list them all, it explains nothing at all and only brings a "theory" that does nothing constructive. I by no means think that we are alone in the universe, but I also by no means think that someone ever visited us, let alone visited us by wasting so much time, resources and people to come here and do absolutely nothing (besides maybe helping early people to build huge stuff made of stone. Because they wouldn't give us technology or knowledge, they would build monuments and leave no trace of ever being here. Well, those aliens would be very stupid and I'm glad they left, when they didn't already contribute anything to humanity. But if they return, I totally didn't say this).

Captcha: Dirnme from
... From? I hope Dirnme is not an offended alien.

My mum watches (and believes) this show...Eugh.

Worst part is sometimes they do find odd things, but ruin any scientific interest there might have been in them by claiming its "aliens" or w/e, ex:

On an island outside the bermuda triangle, is the presence of a series of underwater tunnels that violently sucked anything into them. No one knew where these tunnels lead, and local villagers had loads of superstitions about them from seeing entire ships lost throughout the ages to these tunnels (the suction was so strong it could pull in just about anything from the sounds of it)

No one knows where these tunnels lead, and from the sounds of it, could possibly explain quite a few missing ships or even hint at what sort of dangers the bermuda triangle has.
It could also be interesting finding out just where those tunnels lead to and what sort of loot it has been sucking up for who knows how many interest.

So of course the crazy looking fisherman says he believes it's atlantis style sea men (who he might have seen of course) who kidnap those from above the waters and those tunnels lead back to their ancient kingdom.
The commentator and interviewer agreeing of course.

My mum: :O Atlanteans!!!

Me: /facepalm

I do want to know whats down those tunnels though, might be some genuinely ancient things down them, or like a ship graveyard from hundres of years of ships being sucked down.

Oh and with regards to the Bermuda triangle it is worth noting that it recieved no special attention until the media sensationalized a couple of stories about lost vessels and aircraft in the 50s. It is also worth noting that insurance companies and the US navy record the losses there, and that the frequency of these losses are what they expect for the Atlantic.

US coast guard:

US navy:

Though then again, maybe the US authorities and shipping insurance companies worldwide are simply hiding a giant pot of gold there for reasons unknown, or maybe it's the testing ground for the Nazi UFO programme.

THE ANCIENTS?

Mike dawson, because of meddling with the ancients, has caused anomalies within our history.

What, don't you know that the FIRST Thanksgiving dinner was VISITED BY ALIENS?
YES! And did you know that the INDIANS and the PILGRIMS were ALIENS themselves?
They each came from Planet Indi and Planet Plymouth receptively? And that after the agreement between the two, the Pilgrims control the Stuffing mine which they use to give us humans stuffing each thanksgiving?
But wait... something terrible had happened! the captain of the Pilgrim army, Myles Standish, plummets to earth without warning! Now the Indians have assaulted the stuffing mines and the pilgrims must save them, or else the humans would have no more stuffing for thanksgiving!
He enlists the help of the history channel, three young boys and Natalie Portman... It turns out the only Natalie Portman could transfer the commander back to his planet using her wormhole! ...
Just watch the Southpark episode, "A History Channel Thanksgiving".

I luaghed so hard at this. I actually like the show, it's always good for a jaugh even if it's just from Tsoukalos' wierd "Wind tunnel next to the sun" look he has going on.

On a more serious note they have only raised one valid point, that being the Great Pyramid of Giza couldn't have been made in 20 or 22 years, which doesn't prove aliens did it, just that it took longer than 20 to 22 years.

Heh, good to know. Why pseudo documentaries continue to treat it as a place of mystery i will never understand then.

But thing about what I was saying, is even without its proximity to bermuda triangle, a series of underwater caverns which goes on down for who knows how deep, and has been sucking things in for centuries, that by itself is worthy of scientific investigation.
Older ships, skeletons or fossils of ancient creatures, unknown species of fauna and flora or even natural ressources, these are all possibilities of what can lie down there.

Then you then add atlanteans and it being connected to the bermuda triangle mystery (which you tell me is a complete hoax) and voila, a potentially interesting discovery won't happen because of this damned sillyness.

I don't have sources and such handy for the deep sea science but it is worth noting that due to the pressure and technological limitations the economic interest in deep sea exploration is low, and trying to go to these depths is usually a costly venture if you want to get anything meaningful out've it. If it has been bypassed by science I would be more liable to put it down to financial and technological constraints than all scientists getting their white labcoats in a twist over the rumours regarding this.

Now if only I could get close to an impressionable wealthy person and convince them that I could get them through the Bermuda triangle alive in return for a few billions...

Mmm, I always figured it wouldn't be too expensive to send in probes but yeh, I don't know jack about deep sea science or its logistics, let alone the costs involved.

I think I might try your idea and get into a bermuda triangle survival bet with a frivolous rich person.

That way, I'd have enough money to pay for all these fancy scientific missions myself :)

I've never seen the show before, but I remeber that guy from an Is It Real ? episode on National Geographic. Guess what that episode was about?

Even as a myth I find the Ancient Alien or Ancient Astronaut theory fucking ludicrous. I never really did mind that stupid people chose to believe in it as long as I didn't have to hear about it. But then ofcourse they had to put it in an Indiana Jones movie...
