New as I am, I know there is a huge stigma against repeat threads amongst Escapistians, and that "anime recommendations" has been done a billion times before. But, it's never been done the way I want it to be done.

These past threads are of little help to begin with. The problem has been that they don't specify what the guy who's asking is looking for. Consequently, the same shows that everyone involved already knows about just get mentioned over and over and over and so on. Any actually good and not so well known shows get lost to the ether. Enough of that, don't mention it if you already know we all already know of it.

It doesn't help that most anime is terrible.

Ok, what I'm looking for is some kind of scifi or fantasy with a deep and preferably confusing story.

quickly what comes to mind for me:

- Neon Genesis Evangelion
- Ghost in the Shell
- Serial Experiments Lain (even though that one failed)
- Death Note

Now everyone's already heard of those shows so to name one you probably haven't heard of I must say I loved the movie Paprika.

Paprika is about a device that allows you to enter your own dreams. Unfortunetly, the device gets stolen and misused causing all sorts of havoc. Whats truly great about this movie is that it felt so beyond reality. It was about discovering a deeper level to reality and the consequences of that discovery. I think we all want something deeper to reality, not stupid fantasies but something transendental. If I were religious I'd call it a discovery of the divine. This movie, to me at least, was about indulging that desire.

What about you?

Oh, and please don't just name the show/movie tell us why its awesome.

Lets see what hidden jewels we can dig up.

unfortunately the only anime I've seen is Akira, which I assume you've already seen. And if you haven't, why the hell not? It's one of the pinnacles of anime movies.

You want a good fantasy anime, while still having Sci-fi?

How about a fantasy world with giant robots AND a magical girl at the center of a giant war?
Escaflowne.

Lets see... obscure..... obscure [sub]*have I seen anything obscure? I would like to think so. But if its not mainstream, its probably not for a reason. Hmmmmm[/sub]

The 2 lesser known series that come to mind are Da Capo and Blade of the Immortal, and even those are somewhat common names in the anime community. Da Capo is an excellent romance story, IMO anyway, and Blade of the immortal has a good story with very dark undertones.

I'd recommend Elfen Lied. A lot of it is pure unleaded nightmare fuel in the form of over-the-top disturbing violence, but the story is fairly decent and it has a lot of commentary on racism, discrimination, abuse, social alienation, identity, revenge, jealousy, regret and a whole slew of other generally unhappy things. Occasionally it'll make you laugh, near the end it could make you cry but above all it's pretty damn likely that you'll have nightmares because of it for quite some time.

I like how few people actually read the OP.
Based on what you've listed above, I'm going to recommend Code Geass (first season only, the sequel was pointless and stupid), because it takes an interesting view on guerilla warfare and the impact of collateral damage. Darker than Black, for interesting characters and storyline, and Basilisk, since you asked for an intricate plot.
Oh, and Gurren Lagann is just about the complete opposite of the types of anime you've listed, so I would suggest avoiding it.

both great shows especially eden also tenmgan toppa gurren lagann is epically awesome basquash is good though it is scifi/sports. Gintama is fantastically great but more so action/fantasy/scifi. if you havent seen either fooly cooly or code geass they are both good. ride back is short and sweet with a good amount of drama in between. full metal panic series is suposed to be good. Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is good and confusing especially if watched in the original order aired on tv. and To Aru Majutsu no Index is one of my favourite shows ever it is amazing. if you ever need a recommendation again just message me. i got more =D

Sci-Fi anime...?Never really read any well other than the borderline sci0i FullMetal Alchemist. But I'm pretty sure everyone knows about and or has watched/read FMA. So I got nothing.

Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Ergo Proxy and Guyver.

I would recommend D.Gray-Man but the anime has way too many fillers for a 104 episode series. Literally half of those episodes are filler. Stick to the manga.

Great Teacher Onizuka is another great read too.

I recommend Furi Kuri to EVERYONE. It's one of the few anime I've seen, but I watched it in its entirety in one afternoon and it makes me happy.

It has the sci-fi angle covered, as well as a confusing plot (though probably not confusing in the way you're asking).
