You see, i was requested to write a review about it, it's finished.
But, i wont post it yet, i just wanted to look at peoples opinions before posting it, i might find some new perspectives about it.
My opinion still stands but i would like to aknowledge several perspectives just to make my overall understanding of this thing richer.

A very intriguing and well-made anime. One of the more thematically mature I've ever seen, and there was pretty intense tension due to the fact that pretty much any character could randomly be bloodily ripped apart with no warning at almost any time; you never really knew anyone was safe.

Unfortunately, its main downfalls were the nudity (sometimes it was understandable, or even helpful to the artistic design of the plot, but a lot of times it was just shameless fanservice) and the fact that it just decided to stop halfway through the source manga's story, adding it to the huge, huge, HUGE pile of anime with disappointing endings. Seriously, I don't understand how only a few anime I know of actually ended in a complete, satisfying way.

i liked it, but yeah, it ended 1/2-1/3 of the way through the actual story, and changed a few key things.

I haven't read the Manga, but I did watch the anime. It was alright, a bit gory for me. Didn't appreciate what I deem the, 'The puppy part'; but maybe I am just overly sensitive to that sort of thing. However, I absolutely adore the theme song.

Was a good anime but it ended badly because of the anime caught up with the manga, so they decided to end it.

I found it annoying. Violence and nudity for the sake of it, basically.

Plus, killing innocent bystanders without any clear motive is just fucking stupid, irrespective of any bullshit reason like "I HAZ NO FREYNDS OR PAYRUNTS HURRRR".
This sums up my opinion in a terribly broad way.

If you really want to know, i think the anime is bad, truly bad, like dispassionate mediocrity.
All i'm trying to find is why people think it's a good anime.
Animations fine but it gets a little meh around the time the second effin episode starts, but the soundtrack, characters, writting and overall plot are incredibly slapdashed many characters just killing because 'Oh i have a genome that makes me kill humans' or ' I am evil what do you expect?' and while it could work on some cases Elfen lied is just badly written making those poorly written drama examples into an even more laughable mess of tits, panty shots and violence.

And really, Persona 4 the animation is a much more adult anime than Elfen lied and that is sort of a shonen series.
It's about people confronting themselves with a huuuuge Psychological reserach background behind it and some truly sincere commentaries on society.
Elfen lied it's the same kind of adult as The Witcher or some other dark fantasy etc.
Yeah characters dont cuss but the ammount of nudity and blood just kind of make it a little distasteful and adults wouldn't watch this because theorically they are smart enough to find something that actually is deep and mature as them, oooor they could just watch much more lighthearted shows for catharsis.

The anime isn't even sad for me, it's just infuriating how it expects us to feel symphatetic of the main character when her flimsy as hell backstory is supposed to be roughtly 80% of her response to being asked 'why do you kill so many people'.
I could go on but none of you will read this...

Meh, it was okay. I found it wasn't great, but it wasn't bad either. I would've enjoyed it more if they had focused on character development a tad bit more and less on gore at every chance.

I found that the characters were easy to understand, but they didn't really have any diverse plot points aside from 'Lead Male', 'Lead Female', 'Secondary Cast #1, #2, #3, ect', and 'People who get brutally killed in bloody ways #1 through #8974637 and so fourth'. Sure I might be over-exaggerating the show, but I found that it was too narrow driven on it's violence to be overly fantastic. Also I would have liked to see a more complex story aside from 'Crazy killer chick goes mental and slaughters people after being pushed around for her whole life, and some other stuff about experiments and blah blah blah *kill kill, gore gore*'...

I give it 6 decapitated heads out of 10

dark but i loved it. induced Schadenfreude ( i/ˈʃɑːdənfrɔɪdə/ (German: [ˈʃaːdənˌfʁɔʏdə]) is pleasure derived from the misfortunes of others ) in me during the flashback when we see her first use her powers. Over the top? i can see the arguments for that, but i apreciete the fac that it doesn't give a fluff about taboos.

Was thinking of trying it from my library, heard bad things, decided against it. But the manga... oooh, man. It's somewhere in my Top 10. Good story, well rounded characters, a main antagonist near the end that I hated with every fiber of my being, and a satisfying ending. Not overly depressing, not sunshine-and-rainbows. Pretty good in my book and to this day remains one of my favorites.

The art was meh, though.

No sorry i've only played the games.

And yeah i agree it's not done well, that's why i compared it to Elfen lied, because i think Elfen lied is a gritty dark mature anime done terribly bad.

I watched the anime and I would laugh my ass off at the end credits of every episode. The show was so dark and sad but the song that played over the end credits was lighthearted and poppy. Then the preview would come up to tell you what depressing things would happen on the next episode.

It's an enjoyable anime, the manga is miles better as it goes into more detail and has a real ending unlike the animes which kinda cut of in the middle of the story.

There seems to be a clear love/dislike split with the show.

I'm clearly in the dislike camp. OK, I did watch it and what I saw was thought provoking and fairly interesting to see, but ultimately a good number of things just ruined it for me. No, not the gore, the gore was fine, but the nudity. Why? I love to see a good pair of breasts as much as the next guy but this was just... ugh. Far too much of it at fairly inappropriate times, and I think I died a little when Nana's clothes got ripped off by what's-'er-face toward the end, for no apparent reason. It went beyond "fanservice" and into "turn-off" category often. Though, I have to admit, the first ten minutes were perhaps the best handled of any part of the show. It painted Lucy as both evil and powerful in a very primal way, and the nudity and her covered face only added to the monstrosity that she was.

Which leads to my second real argument. I could never quite figure out what this tale wanted to be. Obviously it was trying to be serious and dark, but at times it seemed like it was trying to be silly. For instance, I can handly Lucy losing all of here memories when shot in the head, and it's easy to swallow a personality change, but Nyu is annoying. It would have been far more interesting to see Lucy emerge from the water with no malicious intent, but still with a voice and words to speak. It would have been interesting to see her memories slowly come back, but the care and decency she would have seen from Kohta had caused her to second guess her actions. What would she do? Go back to her old ways? Feel remorse? Would she kill Kohta and company in a cold-blooded manner, then everyone else? Or would her remorse get the best of her and the pain of living with all that death cause her to commit suicide? I just think there's an incredibly intriguing character arc buried there that only rears its head every now and then. I believe there are some other characters that could have had interesting arcs as well.

Another mark against it is that it often tries too hard to be dark. It has little depth, but unlike some stuff that tries to be too dark, the depth could obviously be there but it just isn't. It takes on far too much and never gets down to solving it all, and it comes across as bad by the time Kohta is forgiving Lucy for popping his father's head off years ago. Actually, it came across as harmful to the show when it reveals that Mayu's father was a pedophile. That entire character was nearly unnecessary.

A final complaint, and this one was given on both sides so don't pull the "shoulda watched subbed" shit on me. The dub is not good at all. I liked Lucy's voice, it was pretty interesting. It was definitely female, but it was also deep and strong and introverted, just like her character should be. Kohta sounded like a dumbass, which he was so I guess that fit too. Everyone else sucked, especially Mayu and Nana. What's worse, I didn't hate their characters, just their voices. They were so fake and annoying and high-pitched that it got on my last nerves.

I do have other complaints about the show, but there are my main ones. The idea had the potential to be an amazing anime, one to prove that anime could really be a form of art instead of just a stupid cartoon. It could have stood up there with Cowboy Bebop and Neon Genesis Evangelion, but ultimately it sits on a pile of decidedly average stuff with too much hype.
I like this. I like this a lot.
It's basically a much more kind-hearted version of my review (although mine is decidedly longer since i take on every small aspect then review it generally)

Yup, mostly recognized as great by teenage boys because of flat boobs, pointless violence and extremely generous gore.
I did like it when she liquidized the daycare kids, but a waste of time and memory otherwise.
