Why do I like anime? When I first got into it I'd never seen anything like it, and in addition it was dirt cheap (had to pay a nominal fee for fansubs on physical media since high-speed internet wasn't the norm back then) meaning I could afford more than if I'd tried to buy more traditionally available television programs and films. I probably got hooked during that period. Nowadays I only really watch anime because it's there and I can get it easily for free - I don't have a TV because I'm not willing to pay for a license fee.

Haruhi Suzumiya. Since I'm very hype aversion-resistant, I watched it even though it's popular. It's a brilliantly deep story with interesting characters. I'm looking for the original novels, as well.
BakaTsuki is your friend. Of course, you probably know that since you have a rather obscure Ciel image for your avatar so perhaps you were looking for a licensed version? Volume one is due to be released this year I believe, so you're in luck.

Full Metal Panic (forced myself to watch the Fumoffu episodes) ... Currently am watching through Bleach, but good god does that thing just drag on and on and on.
Goodness, you too?

I felt the need for stories in which something happens. You see, in each episode of a european/american Cartoons there happens something in the beginning which gets resolved during the episode and in the end it's like nothing ever happened.
I tend to watching anime with an overarching story as I enjoy the progression in a story. And I think the most interesting animes have already been released. Nothing beat Trigun, Neon Genesis, Lain, Texhnolyze, Escaflowne, Ergo Proxy and Bebop, yet.

The main reason for me to take a step back is, simply, that the more childish side of anime became omnipresent. And in my country every fat chick with no social life thinks Sailor Moon is her best friend.
The reason behind that was because networks (thought they) needed to have the option of showing a series out of order and an evolving story arc would make that impossible. It also makes the writers' jobs much easier.

It is a shame that fandom has degenerated into the ah... exceptionally enthusiastic parroting lines they learn by rote from watching fansubs ad nauseam without regard to either meaning or linguistic style. As I like to say, these people think "kawaii" means "cute" when it really means "please bash my face in with a rock".

OK, it really just means "pathetic" but I like my version better.

Actually, I have Beast's Lair to thank for the Kagetsu Tohya translation (and TV Tropes for the image).

I usually prefer licensed versions, anyway (especially of manga), but if something isn't available as such I'll go online for it. Thus, I have BakaTsuki to thank for translating Fate/Zero. I'll look up the Haruhi Suzumiya novels, as well...

Anime is just like every other form of show on TV. Some are good, some are bad, others are mediocre. I'm not going to recommend any anime for the sake of being bashed to hell and back, though I must say, I try to go for the most underrated animes, things like Naruto and Bleach become bad when you realise how over-hyped they are.

If you liked DBZ for the humor and fights, then sir, don't look any further, One Piece is the one you need for crazy long fights that remains entertaining to watch and over-the-top humor. Not to mention, the vast array of characters that are all unique and add to the layer of awesomeness that one piece is.
Yes! after dbz gt i had a hole in my anime life taht needed filling. One peice was just the show/manga for the job! its still going strong, though recently it seems the creators have been experimenting with lcd or something cause the characters are....how shall i say?.......fucked up. except zorro. he's still the coolest.

Can't believe I forgot Lucky Star and Outlaw Star...not that I'd really recommend Lucky Star to very many people. I love it, but I have no illusions about its (lack of) broad appeal.

I wath anime mainly because they have different story lines then american shows. But i still like american shows, like family guy, south park and other humor. Its sort of hard to take anime seriously though. especially when like 90% of it consists of shows like Lucky Star, Strwberry panic, and anything with -hime in the name. Ive only had the pleasure of seeing a few good serious anime, like FMA and....naruto?....Bleach?......no wait, I meant school days and bokurano.
Also, anything vgame oriented (the .hack series) i watch.

I'd really like to read Mein Kampf. Don't really see what the problem with that is.

With that said,

Fuck you all for not mentioning Samurai Champloo. It's awesome. Mugen, Jin and Fuu are all really good characters that you really learn to love or hate quickly. It's funny, has a nice little story and a truly epic setting.
I tried getting into Samurai Champloo. I'm not sure why, but it didn't click with me like Cowboy Bebop did...

just don't watch the english versions. especially not the 4kids ones.
^ that. All of it. Or, even better, read the manga. Although the anime did do SOME things well.

I like Bleach. Or, more accurately, I liked Bleach, before it started to feel like it was just getting dragged out for money. I find that Ichigo's (the main character) "surprise" power-ups are ridiculous...he dies and somehow comes back stronger every second episode now. (Although, Ulquiorra is my favorite character, and he was a fairly recent addition...)

Right. Good Anime. There's really so much of it out there, that there ought to be something for everyone by now. There's plenty of sci-fi/fantasy, an anomalous amount of romantic comedy, the 'high school life' stuff, and an awful lot of violent stuff. What I haven't seen much of is really cerebral anime, Death Note aside, though I haven't been looking very hard. (On that note, is the Death Note anime comparable to the manga? I've only read the latter, never actually seen the anime.)

As an aside, there's a bit of every genre that *doesn't* focus on tits. Which some people seem to think is impossible.

My better half gets very flustered by anime, she finds the entire aesthetic very creepy.

When she told me that I quickly made her watch Urotsukudoji... I'm a bastard I know but it was funny.

As much as I like anime... I don't actively seek it out, they usually find me by way of reccommendations or borrowed from a friend. There are some I've absolutely detested, and some I've latched onto like a suger happy child latches onto an ice cream truck.

But it's always something like; The anime really has to make me believe this is happening, only a few have sold me on it. It's really hard given it's medium. Cowboy Bebop did it, Full Metal Alchemist (dub) did it, Death Note did it, Actually if I'm plain and fair DBZ did it back when I watched it as a little kid... as far as girls go I was pretty weird but it was the only cartoon on in the mornings along with Sonic, Batman and TMNT. Oh and given that I was tired of ignoring and yelling at Narutards without foundations I went out of my way to read the Naruto manga and was pleasently surprised to actually find somthing I liked about it... but alas still not kinda selling me on it. It's just enjoyable.

I mean there have been others which are none too serious which still make me laugh, Ouran High School host club was just one big laugh I certainly could have done with. I still find the old series of Pokemon screamingly funny at the right moods. FLCL is slowly getting to me. Martian Sucessor Nadesico... (wtf srsly)

It's all hit and miss. Theres so many genres, so much diversity now within the medium.

Hell theres a Chinese Anime I'm quite fond of thats so obscure its about Cooking. I just remember we had a 'Chinese Channel' and it had subtitles and I thought it was awesome.
