Anon thinks V for Vendetta is super serious. Though, this time, they dropped that and went to the source, talking about Guy Fawkes. I'm sure he'd be really fucking opposed to assassinations.

Unfortunately, this is what you get when Douchebags use historical iconography. Irony and lulz ensue. And sadly, I'll probably be ranted at for pointing this out, because history isn't as important as what things mean now. Or something.

Ok, yeah, true, but normally I see them pretending to be big and scary over less tangible things.

They've done "serious" issues before, as well, it's just that 80% or more of the time they end up talking big and bad about tripe.

Well I could mention the apology, the efforts made with centrelink, introduction of murri courts. There are many iniatives being instigated by state and federal governments. They are attempting to right the wrongs of the past. Trial and error will see us all through.

Also our government is too stupid to understand oppression, really do you think we are oppressed in our little cosy world right now? Considering everyones beef is with the bank for not lowering interest rates. I would say we are a very unoppressed people. Go to Zimbabwe or China then come back here and tell me we are oppressed

Who is "we"? Do Aboriginal people, many of whom have been fucked over by the government for decades, not count as being part of "us"?

Yes, I, and the vast majority of Australians are not being oppressed by the government. That's very different from the government not oppressing any Australians.

I looked all over the websites dedicated to stopping SOPA that update hour to hour, as well as the House's website it's self, all of them seem to say that both SOPA and PROTECT IP haven't been voted on yet in the House and Senate respectively.

I'm finding no evidence that either of them have gotten passed.

NDAA is not SOPA. SOPA is internet censorship. NDAA basically allows the government to detain foreigners for as long as they feel like, for whatever reason they feel like, with absolutely no accountability.

Oh and it's worded such that it does not exclude US Citizens from its reach.

I am far from advocating a riot, nor do I see anyone else doing the same. Anon is threatening to do "their thing."

A huge issue for me is that 93 Senators voted in favor of this bill, including both Senators from my state.

Some, who actually have passed math and calculus so they won't fuck the entire economy up.

Cute. I freely admit my inability to fully grasp the US economy and how to run it. The government needs individuals who can balance myriad issues in order to right the economy. A proficiency in various forms of mathematics will not be sufficient.

And some, who won't see people as a cattle of sheep with wolfs in the midst, so they must detain ALL the sheep's rights to go free in order to locate the wolfs.

What, why didn't the White House veto it? I'm surprised its gotten this far. This is going to blow up and its going to get on everyones clothes.

It's because after it passes there's a period of time that it sits on the president's desk before he either signs it into law or vetoes it. Currently we're in that desk sitting period while he bargains it out with congress not to over turn the veto.

I'm just waiting for something like this to be used as the 'official justification' for a 'military intervention' in a 'rogue nation', or maybe just used to 'liquidate' someone that's labeled a 'foreign national' that's been listed as a 'terrorist sympathizer'.

I'm really tired of fucking jargon, and I'm really suspicious of anything that gets worded as loosely as this law appears to have been, but at least it's not just the US that tries to cover shit up in confusing doublespeak. I have yet to see an uproar about a this sort of proposed law that DIDN'T have this kind of round-about language; but rarely have they been this (potentially) broad and permissive in their criteria.

Ok, for everyone that doesn't know how the US legislative process works, here's a review. This has passed the Senate. That's part 1 of 3. It's still far from being law. It has to go through the House of Representatives and be signed by the President before it becomes law. Call me naive, but I am hoping that one of the last two "checks and balances" does their damn job and doesn't let this pass.
