Haha, just moved my domains off GoDaddy last month.

Sorry to see so many legitimate businesses taken down by this, though, if there's a silver lining, it will be that some will switch hosting/domain providers. GoDaddy's terrible.

When will news guys and idiots on twitter learn? ANONYMOUS IS A GROUP THAT ANYONE CAN SAY THEY ARE PART OF. It is not official, it is not organized, so why do people keep pretending it is?

Eh. Go Daddy deserves to get hit, even if its users don't. They're obsolete, they support SOPA, and their ads are the sleaziest ever. Sucks for the people using it though. :/

Agreed, SOPA and the 'OMG bewbs, must register domain name' cause me to strongly dislike Go Daddy as well.

At the same time there are a lot of unrelated victims and I don't really support anonymous thinking themselves the arbiters of all things internet. This kind of vigilantism rarely has a positive outcome.

Good thing I could never bother to go for a hosting company or domain registrar named GoDaddy for my web-server. Now HostGator, that's more my kinda company.

He was probably hacking to find all those Danica Patrick pictures they have. Then when he accidentally shut down the site he was like "er... freedom of speech amirite?"

I don't think this was actually meant as a pure attack on GoDaddy for poor practices but just because it was a good group for him to test his strength against. This may be part of a build up strategy for a more interesting attack in the future.

Interested to see what the reason was for taking it down.
It's most likely typical hacker BS. They get their jollies from messing with people digitally. For no other reason then they have the ability to do so.

Some guy on twitter with Anonymous in his name said that he took down GoDaddy, therefore it must be true...

I can't believe that every news site has jumped on this without any verification, and inflated the already massively undeserved reputation Anonymous has. I'm betting that it wasn't a hack and is a technical issue from GoDaddy's crappy infrastructure.

Annnnd there goes my personal email... and my school email, along with any chance of turning in things electronically. Thankfully it occurred just a few weeks into the school year instead of, say, midterms?

Maybe AnonymousOwn3r is actually a HostGator paid hacker, and hid it under the guise of being anon because anon is such an easy organization to claim being a part of.

So Anonymous censors the internet to fight "censoring the internet"... That's taking the high ground for ya!
And this, boys and girls, is a decent example of Irony.

Sure would be nice if they could check the safe of the cyber security without shutting down everyone's email.

I like the way the article notes how 8-10 peoples support out a group of millions now stands for the collective as a whole. Seriously take a look at the twitter feed and of those 8-10 only 3-4 are clearly anonymous, while the rest, just seemed impressed that this ONE HACKER was able to accomplish the task. He wants popularity. That's all it seems by the twitter and him bragging. It reminds me of todays Jimquisition.

He's just mad the Go Daddy girls took out a restraining order against him.
This made me laugh, well done.

I don't like godaddy but is this the best way to deal with them? An eye for an eye makes the world blind

That bit about HostGator made me laugh. Nice way to capitalise on a competitor's misfortune! Although the speed of their reaction seems strangely fast...

Are you just... trying to piss me off, Escapist? Don't... what... why are you saying that Anonymous did this? It's so very obvious that Anonymous has nothing to do with this... even the guy who claims to be a leader of Anonymous said that Anonymous had nothing to do with this... AND THERE ARE NO LEADERS OF ANONYMOUS!

Second verse; same as the first, louder for being OBVIOUS:
Anyone who claims to be in Anonymous, has instantly stopped being anonymous, and is therefore NOT IN ANONYMOUS.

Dear Escapist: Stop paying attention to douche-bags on twitter... or who make forum posts... or who wear Guy Fawkes masks... or who claim to be hackers but are really just following instructions from a forum post made by someone who's actually participating in Anonymous. See point: You cannot gather up any specific people and say "They are in Anonymous". You CAN say that they have participated in Anonymous.

---

Now, that's not to say there isn't now a group... let's call them Anonymice. Idiots who put themselves in the limelight and taking names like IamtheleaderofAnonymousforrealsyo. Some of them have some programming skill but mostly just know how to search for stuff on Google. They send out those sound bites with the horribly re-used synthesized voice thing making grandiose threats full of grandstanding, usually accompanied with a picture of that suit with a question-mark for a head.

Guess what: They aren't Anonymous. They are Anonymice. Know how to tell the difference? Contributors for the Escapist don't seem to know how.
