Ok so i've got another problem and since you all were so helpful with my last problem, I came back for a little more AID...

So my Laptop is back from Geek Squad, with a whole new firewall (Norton) and everything. After about 2 hours of reinstalling stuff (printer, office, network), I find out that there is absolutely no sound coming from my laptop. There isn't even a sound option to control...

After that, I go into the Control Panel and look at the Sound Devices. I see that there is no audio device. Then, I go into the Hardware and see that one of the devices...

IDT High Definition Audio CODEC

...can't start (Code 10).

Now, i'm pretty sure this is the problem, but I have no idea how to fix this.

Can anyone help me out, again? (because I love you?)

Go to install hardware in the control panel. If you computer does not detect it, check your hardware and see if it is properly connected. Other then that, I am not experienced enough to help.

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?os=WW1&osl=EN&catid=-1&impid=-1&servicetag=&SystemID=LAT_D530&hidos=WLH&hidlang=en&TabIndex=

this site says that your machine has a sigmatel chipset. try downloading and installing those drivers. if they don't work try downloading unknown devices here:

http://www.halfdone.com/ukd/

and then see what that give back (if anything)

The driver I got from the Dell site wasn't correct for my computer so it wouldn't install and Unknown Devices didn't tell me anything I didn't already know.

okay then, try this
http://download.cnet.com/IDT-High-Definition-Audio-CODEC/3000-2110_4-197119.html

that's the generic IDT driver. if that doesn't work one may be able to use a generic realtek driver
http://download.cnet.com/Realtek-High-Definition-Audio-Codec-Windows-2000-XP-2003/3000-2120_4-10788584.html

if either of those don't work, you may be looking at a possible hardware issue....

you had the issue about the popping sound before right?

Well, I never had problems with sound before I took my computer in but after I got it back there is the problem...

I'm starting to get the feeling someone did something to the driver at Geek Squad...

I'll let you know...

I was thinking of another thread then.

I've seen things like that happen before though, it was a big issue with vista early last year, vista had a windows update which would knock out audio drivers on the system.

I hope that isn't what happened because i'm not knowledgable enough to go into my physical computer to find the sound card...

Anyways, the IDT driver I got from CNET didn't work so now i'm trying the other one you told me bout...

Yeah. And in addition to that uninstall Norton and get AVG 8.5 Free. You might also want SuperAntiSpyware, Spybot: S&D, and SpywareBlaster. Just get all free versions, using these in combination affords you full coverage without paying for anything. You can find any of these on Google.

Trying to protect your computer with Norton alone is like trying to block a fire hose with a sheet of soggy toilet tissue. Geek Squad wants your computer vulnerable so you'll get infected with a bunch of viruses and give them more money to fix it.

You also aren't being helpful in anyway...

the problem with most laptops is the sound card is integrated into the motherboard >_>
Geek Squad shouldn't have done ANYTHING with the motherboard. My laptop had some nasty viruses. There was nothing wrong with the motherboard...

It was fine when we took it in on saturday...

While I agree that Norton is complete and utter dogshit, those free antiviruses aren't the best in the world.

about half the computers I see that come into my store have those av/as applications installed, but they're still heavily infected.

Gah, people said McAfee was complete bullshit (which I did agree with), but now Norton? Is there ANY antivirus software worth getting?!?!?

Anyways, I fixed my sound problem (I downloaded a completely different sound driver after fumbling around with the original one Windows Update installed)

Thanks to all the people who were helpful (you deserve a hug). For all those people who weren't helpful...well...you can insert any hurtful phrase in...

WARNING: DO NOT INSTALL THE IDT SOUND DRIVER BECAUSE IT WILL CUT OUT YOUR SOUND!!!

well I dislike both norton and mcaffee. norton is okay, but its a little too invasive and archaic for the normal user (x application wants to access the internet. allow? most just click okay to get it out of the way) not only that Norton takes up a lot of system resources in the background (it runs like 17 different services)

Personally I really like Webroot Spysweeper with antivirus. very user friendly and has fantastic definitions for both viruses and spyware.

any antiviurs has their pros and cons, but you need to constantly scan your pc. I recommend 2x a week.

also, grats on getting the right drivers. that's what 1/4th of my job consists of
