The answer is either time or nothing.
What works when you throw it away? (It has multiple answers)
Time or water.

I go with water as the moon has no water and its mountains have remained the same for billions of years. Just my guess.
Wrong answer. Who ever says both answers gets something way better than a cookie :D

As cold as death;
Never thirsty, ever drinking,
All in mail never clinking

It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,
Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt.
It lies behind stars and under hills,
And empty holes it fills.
It comes first and follows after,
Ends life, kills laughter.

This thing all things devours:
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;
Gnaws iron, bites steel;
Grinds hard stones to meal;
Slays king, ruins town,
And beats high mountain down.

If you know the answer shout it out, but only if you have one to put after.
It is time. Wasn't this riddle from The Hobbit?

TIME! right?

"This great beast has long stalked the land, turned our cities to deserts of sand,
taken our friends, family and lovers, but in suffering shal make us brothers."

(it's the only one i could remember-and it's a bad one, really easy I know)

EDIT: DAMN too late, but at least I have the first original response.

I kill gods and the devil too;
No one is safe from me.
From prisoner to demi-god,
I've come a long way.
I use tools in a most ironic way,
destroying, not creating.
Who am I?

This will be hard
kratos from god of war ........?

if not then the guys that rate the games!

A good 70% of these are from The Hobbit.

If you put this in a barrel it will make it lighter....?
(I think that one was on an episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark :D)

I admit it may not be the correct answer or given answer but I do believe water soes all the the things originally put forth in the riddle. Time however at least for a body like the moon needs water and has remained unchanged regardless of time.

This thing all things devours: water can devour anything it covers. loods
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers; same as above response, floods
Gnaws iron, bites steel; rust and rust, even stainles steel
Grinds hard stones to meal; yes, look at any river bank or ocean beach
Slays king, ruins town, floods
And beats high mountain down. normal weathering process

Again this may not be the sought answer, but it does all these things.

If you know the answer shout it out, but only if you have one to put after.

Well answered. Here's is your award. It's way better than a picture of cookie. :D
Your reward is the knowledge and satisfaction of knowing the answer to a riddle nobody else knew

Noticed that myself how just about every riddle here is from that.

Pronounced as one letter,
And written with three,
Two letters there are,
And two only in me.
I'm double, I'm single,
I'm black, blue, and gray,
I'm read from both ends,
And the same either way.
What am I?
