The answer is either time or nothing.
What works when you throw it away? (It has multiple answers)
Time or water.

I go with water as the moon has no water and its mountains have remained the same for billions of years. Just my guess.
Wrong answer. Who ever says both answers gets something way better than a cookie :D
I admit it may not be the correct answer or given answer but I do believe water soes all the the things originally put forth in the riddle. Time however at least for a body like the moon needs water and has remained unchanged regardless of time.

This thing all things devours: water can devour anything it covers. loods
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers; same as above response, floods
Gnaws iron, bites steel; rust and rust, even stainles steel
Grinds hard stones to meal; yes, look at any river bank or ocean beach
Slays king, ruins town, floods
And beats high mountain down. normal weathering process

Again this may not be the sought answer, but it does all these things.

If you know the answer shout it out, but only if you have one to put after.
Well put. From the way you stated it it is most likely water or time. But I'm still convinced that the answer is still time. Either way everyone have different ideas and theirs are just as good as your or mine answer even though we don't like it. :)

The Hobbit much? Just saying...
Noticed that myself how just about every riddle here is from that.

Pronounced as one letter,
And written with three,
Two letters there are,
And two only in me.
I'm double, I'm single,
I'm black, blue, and gray,
I'm read from both ends,
And the same either way.
What am I?
man...i racked my brain and cant get it.
do tell and you can do another one if you want.

a water balloon??
Never thought of that as an answer. I was expecting either grenade or a boomerang.
Here's is another riddle. A rooster was sitting on top of a house facing north when he laid an egg while The wind was going north-east, where would the egg land?

It comes first and follows after,
Ends life, kills laughter.
Darkness.

Decapitate me and all becomes equal. Then truncate me and I become second. Cut me front and back and I become two less than I started.

What am I?

EDIT: I'm just going to put the answer up, because knowing me, I'll probably forget it.

The word Seven.

seven
even (equal)
eve (2nd person, according to the Bible)
v (Roman numeral five; two less than seven)

Time, of course

Ok, here goes:

Here is a riddle, you must guess a name
It's someone who has the perfect aim
If you see him shooting, don't try to blink
Because he can shoot faster than you think
Fictional he is, his shirt being yellow
He has a horse as his biggest fellow
Now guess his name and don't be shy
What is the name of this famous guy?

Roosters don't lay eggs.

I don't have any riddles in me at the moment.
