Greed driven, power hungry hypocrites posing as immaculate saviors of all what's good.
That's what they all are...

I hope that with Gaben showing the right path things will change in future. :)

Let me put it this way: BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA*snort*BWAHAHAHAHAHA*huff**huff*hehehehehehe....

For the sake of at least some content: I just hope it ends in some sort of lose-lose situation. I don't know this specific add, but I know those unskippable adds playing before legally bought movies, reminding you that you are a bad person if you pirate. And this, while pirates don't have to deal with this sort of shit, because they just edit it away. These adds are a perfect example of corporations punishing their paying costumers, just giving more reason to pirate. For this form of thinking they just can't suffer enough.

Makes no sense when either when they had so much royalty free music they could have chosen from, or they could have asked Adam Buxton:

It wouldn't surprise me if they just went ahead and did it anyway, knowing they were huge, and thinking they're the ones making the law, so must be above them.

After all, they'd paid him once, surely that's enough for anyone, right?

In other news, your favourite movie is out. Now it's out as a special 2 disc edition. Now it's out as a digital download. Now it's out on Blu Ray. Keep buying it again and again!

Musician files lawsuit: Barely news.
Musician claims anti-piracy organization performed copyright infringement: Vaguely interesting news.
Musician's lawyer attempts to screw him out of more profit than the anti-piracy group: Epic news.

Just goes to show that the copyright industries problem with piracy isn't that the artist isn't getting paid it's that they aren't getting a cut of what the artists should be getting paid.

Where there no piracy they would probably invent it just to have some justification for wanting the artists money.

Wait, did they? They didn't. Surely they didn't? Tell me they didn't!
It wasn't fox, it was KRQE, a news station in new Mexico.

Anyway, I love the irony of this situation.
im pretty certain he is talking about this

I don't understand exactly what has this to do with video games. This [http://torrentfreak.com/swiss-govt-downloading-movies-and-music-will-stay-legal-111202/], on the contrary, does have a little bit more to do with games than this article, but, for some reason, I never see TorrentFreak cited for the news that don't present piracy as a negative thing in game sites like this. Why would that be?

Oh, didn't see that one. I just saw the KRQE one. Not surprised though.

No link from a news source in our language?

No details on any contract?

It would be nice to get at least half a story...

EDIT: It's probably some guy who wishes he had made a better deal. Then he was told he'd need to pay a third of his winnings to even proceed legally. Not that crazy of a thing.
no, it isn't.

i'm dutch, and i did some reasearch. the artist is probably in the right. here's how it is:

the artist composed a song for BREIN. they were supposed to use it only once. however, they put it on millions of DVD's without his permission.

This is not a point of contention, it says so in his contract. BREIN was supposed to use it only once. they owe him money.

of course, it's difficult for a lone artist to get this money from a big organisation like that. therefore, songwriters, writers, composers and so on united into Buma/Stemra.

Buma/Stemra is a organisation meant specifically for claiming royalties. the artists can register his song to the organisation (this doesn't take away ownership. it only allows Buma/Stemra to collect for him), and they will make sure the artist gets royalties whenever or wherever his song is played. in essence, they are a writer/composer/songwriter's union.

but here's the critical point: buma/stemra is a NON-PROFIT organisation. they do not require contribution or a percentage of the artist's income. in some cases, they do require a administrative fee, but NOT in this specific case.

the artist, when he found out about BREIN using his music in 2007, indicated this to Buma/Stemra. they said the would look into it. for the next 3 years, nothing happenend. they told him they were working on it, but didn't get any results.

he recently got a call from a board member of Buma/Stemra (called gerrits), offering him to look into the matter. the artist would have to give up a third of the money gerrits could get for him, and in return, gerrits would use his influence in the industry to actually collect the money. and just to clarify: Gerrits was talking about giving money to HIM, not the organisation. he would get it on his personal bank account.

in essence, he was charging 33% for a service he is legally required to provide for free. a textbook example of corruption.

as for the 'misinterpeted' defence, Pownews (the ones who recorded the conversation) put the entire phone call online. it's pretty damning. Gerrits is clearly offering him two - thirds of the royalties, as opposed to the nothing he has now. he can't do that, though, because he's supposed to get him all of the money for free.

it's caused quite a bit of ruckus in the netherlands, and it looks like the artist is entirely in the right.

If I ever have kids and they ask me why the world is so cruel and doesn't conform to their wishes like the utopia it should be, I'll keep this page bookmarked.

There is so much wrong with this story that it simply fails to invert into a hilarious and awesome piece and instead is just facepalmingly stupid.

This site features a lot of non-game content. Some of the videos are even non-game related. Escape to the Movies is the easiest example.

Susan Arendt was even hired as a "not games" editor.

That part is easy to answer. What has it got to do with games? Nothing. Does it need to? no.

Doctor Who gets movie? Not games related, covered here.

Lawsuit over Nathan Fillion/firefly poster? Not games related, covered here.

As for the piracy bit, it's harder to answer, but you consider that when you signed up, you agreed to rules that prohibit admission to piracy....

Irony tastes so incredibly good.

Pirates are being hunted down by agencies staffed with other Pirates.

How amazingly tasty. Especially the "Give me a third of your 1.3 million or else you can suck it".

It wasn't even like he was demanding 33% in PAYMENT to the company. No he was asking for a fucking Bribe to him personally. I love it.

Thanks for that, really helps clear the story up.

Isn't that less piracy and more... I dunno, it just doesn't seem like piracy, considering they paid him for it and just used it in the wrong place
The thing is that they didn't pay him for it. At least not the money he's owed for its subsequent uses.

I do love the irony here. If only it would happen to the RIAA too.
