I acidently insatlled a rogue anti-virus, anti virus 2009.
It looks just like genuine windows software and installs itself even if you click cancel as i found out. It constantly bombards you with false virus alerts that try and make you buy Antivirus 2009 and banner pop ups that miminize whatever your doing.
Thankfully a free bit of software- Spybot search and destory finally got rid of it.
Be on the lookout for it. It installed 100 of peices of malware on my machine and is incredily easy to get.

Yup. Got it a few days ago, for some reason, my computer has been having internet problems ever since, even though my AV deleted it.

My nephew put it on my machine too, little git, I found it wouldn't let me install anything else, or use the net.

I'm really worried by the fact that there hasn't been a reply from someone who HASN'T had it yet :/ I'm gonna barricade all my doors and sit on my firewall with a shotgun.

I have never installed any anti-virus programs. Even if it be freeware or any kind of software that is titled to protect your computer. I have my own, what you could call consipiracy theories, about this.

If I were to get a virus or something like that, which is almost impossible, I would format my HD. I use backups, its the best kind of virus protection you can get. If the virus is serious, then it would be a good excuse to build myself a new PC.

now the lovely think about the firewall like say.... comodo is that it's excellent for preventing something like that since it queries you about EVERYTHING which a program wants to do.... some installing 100 different program (or even one unless it's in install mode) is impossible without you knowing and being able to stop it.

As is something running a keylogger, displaying stuff on your screen, accessing the internet etc.

Also its internet blocking of newly installed (and thus not safe moded) full screen games doesn't crash then and my computer as often as zonealarm did

(feels safe behind his small barricade of spybot - search and destroy, spyware blaster, avast, comodo and the noscript addon for firefox)

and the best part is....all freeware ^^

While that is the best approach (though I end with a format) if you can prevent the stuff getting onto your computer in the first place is generally the easiest approach and can save you plenty of time.

For Combined, try Advanced System Care by IObit. It works wonders and cleans your computer and optimizes the performance settings. It worked wonders on my mothers desktop and its being running three times faster just with the free version. But anyways, I can't get it I run Linux Ubuntu 8.04. >p

I don't have it. you guys need to take a page out of my book and trust nothing ever no matter how genuine it looks apart from wikipedia ironically.

I'd recommend trying spybot or Avg to get rid of it. my computer was in a state before I found spybot S&D.

What like everything is an incompatible mess and dies horribly in the corner?

Cause if you do then nope, everything works fine and comodo can easily let a program do whatever it needs to, it just asks about everything a new program tries to do unless you say "trust this" which you should only need to do for recently installed programs.

I merely responded to this part of your post:

Should have specified more.

And if I would recommend any protection software at all, the safest and best bet is:

I'll accompany you, on MY firewall of course :D

I'm not getting one of them free AVs again! I had to format my pc the last time I did! Nope, only pirated-full version anti viruses for me XD
