Ghost Hound. Yes, the neuropsychology in the series is hokey. That's at least partially the point. Also yes, the ending is a massive letdown. Still, it's worth it for everything between the first episode and the last. A very tense, interesting show.
Serial Experiments Lain: Sci-fi with horror elements. Slightly incomprehensible, but overall a good show.

I used to watch that when I was younger. I enjoyed it but it couldn't keep my attention for very long for some reason. It's the same now at this age because I have tried to go back to it a few times.
*Assuming you mean GITS*
You could try the movie from '95 (subtitled, the dub track was good for its time, but by modern standards it's just awful). The film is probably slower, but Oshii is an amazing director, so it all works out.
That's how I got into the series, although it may have just been something that appealed to my tastes, since I ended up watching the entire first season in a day or two.
