Vampire Knight is brilliant, they manage to both sexualise the vampiric image, while at the same time emphasising how leathal they all are no exceptions, in the end.

There is a carefully constructed pyramid of class and rule in the vampires of Vampire Knight, the Purebloods being the highest and the only kind that can transform a human into vampire, down to the E class, who fall off the bottom of the pyramid and are the end result of all transformed vampires, as they eventually go mad and rampage, and I rather liked the idea.

Going on the I am ledgend book (not film) Vampires where harmed by ddirect sunlight, religous symbols (only the symbols they worshipped when they were alive though), can't cross running water or something? died if their blood cane into contact with the air (so deep cuts kill them)
mirrors had the sam effect as religous symbols and were warded off by the garlic

There were also different kinds of them the living ones that were in a kind of induced coma thing, and the dead ones who had come back from the dead, also they had the ability to repair damaged to their skin. ( a bit like wolverine)

I like the vampires that was used by the greek orthodox church (at least I belive to remember that this was the church.) used to scare the shit out of people.
You know, the ones that Bram Stocker used to make the Dracula in his book.

They're spawns of satan, without reflection, nor shadow as these reclects the existense of the soul wich vampires do not have. They feast on blood wich is the vessel of the soul, thus robbing their victims of their soul.
They cannot endure the daylight as that is Gods domain, and can comand and transform into all creatures subdued by the devil. they are hideous to look at, but with the hypnotic powers of satan they can take on different human forms.

this is the way a vampire should be: 1)evil, 2)disgusting, 3)powerfull, 4)AWSOME!!!

I just love Buffy. I feel like it parodies the whole vampire craze rather nicely.

Darren Shaun's vampire mythos was always my favorite. Vampires were mortal, weren't harmed by religious stuff, and had neat little powers to feed without killing. That, and their entire society revolved around combat, which made the books awesome when I was 8.
It's Darren Shan, by the way. Great series...I think. I need to read more of them.

Besides that slice of awesome, I'd also say a little-known book called Dhampir was pretty good to me. No great literature, but it was just an interesting way to do vampires. They can be wounded, but with the exception of a few weapons, will heal, and garlic water burns them, but the only way to finish one off is decapitation or burning them to ash.

I just did, come on!

(Alright, it seems I'm not the only one trying to cash in on the post-Twilight vampire sprawl... here's my sign [cookie for anyone who guesses the reference. It's pretty obscure.])

Are you also trying to redefine vampires in a more appreciative light?

As long as you aren't making a vampire romance, I suppose.
Well, I should admit that I started my book before the movie came out, and long before I ever read the novels. (Which I admit I did do.)

Yes, though my vampires share many of the classic traits with the vampires in novels and movies of past. They don't sparkle, for instance.

My book does contain romance, but there's much more to it. The next fifty or so pages I write will have no romance in it whatsoever. Just killing shit, to be rather vague. My vampires are pretty too, I should add. I'm a girl, what can I say?

Did I mention my book will be amazing when I finish it?

I think it very much depends on the fiction in which vampires are incorporeated. The vampires in Buffy for example are pretty awful, at least on their own, but they fit the fiction, and together with all the rest they fit in, and they become better than they would be on their own. The vampires in WoD work pretty well on their own, but with all the other supernatural creatures in the world, they kind of fall flat. The vampires in the Warhammer universe are awesome, but sadly neglected, and not used to their full potential.

It also depends on the purpose of the story, and the role vampires are supposed to play. If vampires are supposed to be the protagonists (though not necessarily the main characters) then they still have to be somewhat human, relatable. They have to be able to control (or at least direct) their impulses, and be able to interact with humans. On the other hand, if the vampire is an antagonist (I really hope people know what the words really mean), wether as a villain, monster, or pet, on the other hand, more freedom is available. I personally like the image of the vampire as a deformed beast, like in some older legends, gone mad, being just a savage animal hungering for the blood of humans, no ability to speak, or reason, but highly cunning, supernatural strength and resilience, and with a host of other instinctual abilities, with an appearance similar to the vamps in Heroes 3, but even more so.

Ghouled, or embraced animals are pretty cool too, especially animals you don't really expect. Not wolves or bats, but snakes, cats, panthers, birds.

I really don't like the sciency vampires of Blade, Underworld or Ultraviolet (or the Initiative). I can understand the want to understand how it works, but the point of vampires is that they don't. I don't have anything against attempts at explaining it, just not when it works, or a fiction tries to explain in technical terms how vampires work, or throw uv-lights at them or something. It's the life-giving properties of the sun, the importance it has on culture, life and development, it's spiritual importance that damages them. Not uv-radiation. It's not a virus or poison in their fangs that turn others, it's a curse, passed along. Their strength, speed and abilities aren't measurable, or possible to explain, they are supernatural, mythological creatures for a reason, and should be allowed to remain so (this goes for all fictions). That particular part is handled very nicely in Cyberpunk, where belief is what shapes a vampire, and determines it's weaknesses. At the moment of their creation, their beliefs of what kills a vampire will shape them, and will be the only thing able to kill them, and keep them dead, because when those conditions are met they will surrender, give up, and they will THINK that they're supposed to die, subconsciously killing themselves instead.
