i had to stop reading this thread because so many people were hating on fahrenheit 451. what the hell is wrong with this country?

1984 is overrated, but i wouldn't say it's bad. i liked of mice and men, and i don't see what the problem is with the crucible or the scarlet letter either. then again, i read both of those in the same class i read ethan frome in.

FUCK. THAT. BOOK.

tldr version: ethan frome is sad b/c his wife is a *****. he falls in love with his wife's hot cousin instead. he spends most of the book doing having emo hissy fits because he's too much of a pussy to do anything about it. eventually he finally tells the cousin he loves her but since their love can never be they decide to kill themselves...

BY SLEDDING INTO A TREE. of course they find out this is an absolutely retarded way to commit suicide, and they both survive, only now ethan is a gimp and the cousin is bedridden and a bigger ***** than ethan's wife ever was.

'The Colour Purple'

I had to read it in college. It was shiiiit. Sure, it has historical significance... but that doesn't mean it's not a boring, flawed piece of literary tripe.

I hate this book. Sure, I agree with the message "Intolerance is bad yadayada blablabla." but that dooesn't stop it being boring as hell, the entire plot being a heap of contrived bullshit, the best part of it being ripped of from another author (who probably ripped it off from someone else) and the verse being totally lame.

I agree 100% on that one. It's kinda sad because I was forced to read it in my Enriched (basically honors) Langauge Arts class (Im was an eighth grader at the time, I mind you. and Im going to be a ninth grader) when my bro, whos in 11th grade read it, he understood it, but then he wondered why the hell I was reading it, because we, essentially, were reading it at the same time. Dang I hate my LA teacher.

Catcher in the Rye!!! Worst, most boring book in the entire world. What the hell was the point of that story? To listen to Holden Caulfield complain about his life. He was the reason his life sucked! He never did anything, but complain and have a weird, almost sexual relationship with his very young sister.
Pretty much this. I couldn't get through it, no matter how hard I tried. All he seemed to do was complain about everything. And that annoyed me more than anything. For most of my mandatory schooling, I was surrounded by whiny teenagers who thought that life was over because Mommy and Daddy didn't buy them the latest cell phone or let them go to the school dance.

...And now I'm pretty much whining here... Okay, I'll stop now.

I can understand that some people don't like the book. It's a pretty complicated psychological story, of little kids on an island. I liked it though.

Can't think of any particular classics I didn't like at all. I can think of a couple that can be concidered as classics that I've read. Dracula by Bram Stoker was a bit boring at some bits, but it was a very interesting way to tell the story (diary entries, news paper articles etc. no direct story telling). Another one would be And then there were None by Agatha Christie. I think that book is brilliant and everyone hating that book are actually people who don't read more than the first 20 pages.

Moby Dick is literally the most boring book I have ever read.

Of its 500 pages, 400 of them are about whales. Bone-structure of whales. Different types of whales. Differences in bone-structure between different types of whales. Debate over whether or not dolphins are whales. Size of whales. Uses of whales. Stories about whales.
I feel the same way... and for some reason I forced myself to finish it. *cringe*

I really found that the only classics I didn't enjoy were the ones I had to study at around 16 years old. Re-reading them now (as an English literature student) I enjoy almost all of them, I'd highly recommend "The Catcher in the Rye", "The Picture of Dorian Gray" and "Catch-22" to anyone who doesn't seem to get on with "the classics".

Both To Kill A Mockingbird and Lord of the Flies were okay, in my opinion. But the one classic I absolutely hate is The Pilgrim's Progress, by John Bunyan.

There's little to no character depth at all, and every single dilemma of the plot is resolved either with infuriating deus ex machinas or not at all. There's a part where he's imprisoned, by the EVIL, EVIL, NON-BELIEVERS, and the explanation for how he escaped is pretty much :"He escaped". That's it; he comes up with most arbitrary justifications for the motivations and actions for every character, which are black and white. As in: all Christians who think and believe exactly as I do are the epitomes of virtue and good, while everyone else is evil, unjust, stupid, aggressive, insecure, lying, vain, or too intelligent for their own good. The storyline seems put on near-infinite loop, with a rise-and-repeat approach to every trial and obstacle the protagonist, Christian, comes across.

It was an absolute waste of head space, and I strongly dislike my Bible teacher for pushing that tripe on us.
