Any tips regarding Persona 3?

So I'm just about to start playing through Persona 3, I'm literally at the difficulty select. I usually don't play JRPGs but I figured I should try to branch out and see what all the fuss was about. Just wondering if anyone had some tips for me.

Oh god good luck . If your not used to jrpgs i don't think P3 is the best one to start with , i would have personally chose P4. Anyways , try to talk to as many people as possible to get a high social rank thing . Also try many demon combinations . Also don't spend TOO much time grinding at the begining , luck plays a somewhat important role when you are fighting bosses, so sometimes you might die just out of bad luck and not because you were too low q level , so don't just give up and say " well ima go grind for a few hours". You'll usually notice when it's not worth it to grind , stronger monsters will always be available after the boss. Remember to always have a demon with a healing skill and preferable a revive skill and NEVER EVER use or get the skill recarmdra , not worth it .

Anyways good luck .

I'm going to give you a recipe for a Persona that will hopefully make the game slightly easier for you. (at first anyway, don't think this Persona will carry you through the whole game)

First, you need a Forneus (you can get one by fusing Nekomata with Pixie or you can find one in Shuffle time. The fusion might be quicker though)

Fuse Forneus with Angel. This will get you a Lilim that has Agi, Garu, Zio and Bufu (remember in fusing that unselecting the Personae you're fusing and then reselecting them will shuffle the skills they inherit)

So now you have a Lilim with all four main elemental spells, and that Persona will be useful for a good long while.

If you'd like to go even further than that, you can fuse that Lilim with Orpheus to make a Yomotsu-Shikome with all four spells (both are decent, it comes down to personal preference)

Other than that, the advice I give is...

1. Social Links are important, don't neglect them
2. Try to make sure you reach as high as you can in Tartarus before each full moon (this can usually be done with just a few trips per month, only one once you're higher level)
3. Try to carry Persona with an array of resistances and spells. Always carry some Persona that can heal, even if you're using party members that can heal too.

Oh and the biggest piece of advice I can give.

SAVE. OFTEN. Trust me, you will hate yourself if you don't.

Persona 3 results in game over if the Protagonist dies, and two of the elements (Hama and Mudo) cause instant death if they hit.

Nothing causes a rage quit faster than spending hours grinding only to get wiped out by a random shadow's instant death spell.

Hope this helps. Lemme know if you have any other questions.

Oh, and something else I don't recommend is reading Persona 3 FTW, the parody walkthrough comic that's loaded with spoilers :p

In addition to the above post(s). First,on Social Links don't worry about getting them all you'll make yourself miserable trying. Just do the ones you want and you'll do fine. Also don't worry about your social stats too much, just level them up at a decent pace and you'll be fine.

For combat: Just keep at it,you'll probably die...alot but don't get discouraged, just exploit the hell out of weakness. Also try to make it to the barrier for each month if you do then you'll be more than prepared for the big bosses at each full moon. When fusing persona it's best to cover your basses and complement what your team can do. Be prepared to play what ever role your team needs. On controlling the A.I: use Knock down, you get it in about June/July and it makes everyone do well. Though you may have to tweak it some times it's still probably the best strategy to default to.

Subtle advertising?
OT: Just enjoy the ride, man. Don't waste the pre-sleep sections, build them social links, do big stretches in Tartarus, and don't try to max out all your personal stats (academics, etc) in one run, because I think it's pretty much only possible using a guide.

Are you playing just plain Persona 3? (As opposed to FES or P3 Portable) If so, basic battle tips are to never let your main character die (I can't remember if the game ever explicitly tells you this, but it's instant game over if the MC dies). In the second or third floor of Tartarus, monsters start getting light and dark spells which can immediately kill you, so get a persona with appropriate protection if you can. Aside from that, try to have one persona for every type of element spell plus one for healing. If you have P3P, put your teammates on direct control.

For difficulty, normal and easy have the same enemy strength, easy mode just gives you a few free extra life items (so if your MC dies in a boss fight, everyone immediately comes back to life and you keep going where you left off). I'd go with easy to save some frustration.

For exploring tartarus, you get more experience with less people in your party, so you can level up pretty fast if you send your team to explore on their own or if you just take one teammate with you. Getting the green wands during shuffles can also get you tons of experience, especially late in the game.

For social links, you'll finish a few automatically over the course of the game. There's only one or two that you can do at night, so use that time to boost your academics/courage/the other one instead of during the day, and then use the day to do social links. Once the 5 girl social links hit lvl 5, they will get mad at you for doing another girl's social link until the 1st girl hits lvl 10, in which case you can then move on to the next girl. Also, if you go a month and a half or so without doing a social link, then the person may get mad at you and you won't be able to finish. Bring a matching persona whenever you can to a social link, and you should max out at least 12 over the course of the game.

Battle isn't too bad as long as you have good resistances and exploit enemy weaknesses, so be prepared and you'll do fine.

Thanks for the advice everyone I really appreciate it.

I hung around Kenji enough to raise my magician social link several ranks but I was wondering how to raise my social link with SEES. It seems all of it's members just hang around the dorm making idle conversation. Also, should I be actively looking for more links right now or just stumbling into them?

Assuming you're playing either the original version or FES and not Persona 3 Portable (and if you are playing P3P, assuming you're the male protagonist) the only party member social links are Yukari, Fuuka and Mitsuru.

Yukari's link becomes available in July, but you need to have Max Charm
Fuuka's link becomes available any time after you initiate the Fortune link, but requires Max Courage
Mitsuru's link becomes available November 21st, but you need Max Intelligence AND must have been number 1 in your class on at least one exam (which you would be if you had max intelligence when taking it)

Other than that you have the Fool link which is SEES as a whole that only goes up at specific story events, and Judgement which is way at the end of the game.

In regards to links, the game sort of tells you about most of them (except the three girls I just mentioned) but some of them can only be unlocked by reaching a certain level in a different link

You mentioned Kenji, at one point Kenji mentions a guy who calls himself the Gourmet King who hangs out at the mall. If you find that guy, he's the Moon link (and I believe requires rank 2 charm and an Odd Morsel item, which you can find in Tartarus)

A few other notable examples are Temperance being unlocked by doing Hierophant, Strength unlocked by doing Chariot, Justice unlocked by doing Emperor and Sun unlocked by doing Hanged Man.

Charm goes up by getting the right answers in class, and Intelligence goes up by not sleeping in class when given the option. Those are two of the quickest ways that don't really waste any time.

Oh, and an extra trick for raising Courage. If your character is ever Sick or Tired, go to the school nurse after school. He will give you some medicine that will raise your courage without taking up any of your time.

Other than that, studying at night is a pretty good way to raise it, and you can raise charm and courage by doing karaoke or drinking pheromone tea at the mall at night.

The game only has 2 night time social links (assuming you're playing FES, only 1 if you're playing the original) so if you ever find yourself on a night when you're not going to Tartarus (and you're not tired) maybe raise a stat.

Anytime. I'm a huge fan of Persona 3, and if I can help someone enjoy it, I'm happy to help. Like I said, don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions. I'll do my best.

Though I do have to ask one question just to make this easier on me (and someone here asked it too) which version of Persona 3 are you playing, because there's three of them.

There's just P3, FES (which is like a directors cut) and P3P which is...well...for the PSP lol

The original, P3, sorry for not making that clear.

Quite alright. At least now I know what you're dealing with. Hmmm...you won't see a couple minor scenes (nothing majorly plot related, don't worry)

The only major difference in gameplay for you is that the Devil social link will take place during the day instead of at night, which isn't THAT big of a deal. The Devil link is actually kinda unique (along with Sun) because no matter what dialogue choice you pick or even if you don't have a Persona of the arcana with you, it'll go up by a rank every time.

I see, that's good to know. Regarding Orpheus, I'm not quite sure what to do with him. He's pretty much my weakest persona at the moment however I like him a lot. Is it possible to improve him quickly or will he be left in the dust?

Sadly there's not much you can do with Orpheus, which is a shame because I'm a fan of story specific Persona. It's true that if you had enough time and patience, way later in the game you could fuse a good one, but I don't know of any good recipes for doing that.

If you were playing FES the reward for completing all the social links in a single run (no easy feat btw, don't worry about trying to do it yourself) is a Persona named Orpheus Telos who is basically the best Persona in the game and looks like a red version of Orpheus, and if you were playing P3P you'd have Spell Cards to customize Orpheus any way you wanted.

But yeah, in the original Orpheus can't do much. If you really want to, you can try to track down some recipes for making a good one, but you wouldn't really be able to take advantage of it until late game.

The closest you can get in the original is the Persona that you'll unlock once you complete the Judgement link (which as I said is story related)

This also may be of some help. Once you get rolling and begin needing personae with different skill combinations, someone made a persona analyzer program that will give you the outcome of any combination. Not really a gameplay tip, but it'll save you some time.

Hmmm... Most of the advice I would give has already been said here by Strain. I will say that the original version of Persona 3 feels trickier then the PSP version since you only have full control over the protagonist.

The one piece of advice I would give is never waste an open space of time. Use night-time to study, go somewhere to boost stats, go to Tartarus, anything.
