Anyone ever had broken consoles?

I have a PSOne, PS2, PS3, Wii, Xbox and X360.
Why yes, the ony one from that list that died on me, was the 360 - red ring all the way!
About 1 month after the warranty expired.

Then I bought a new one, which refused to play certain games on my 50 Hz tv (which the old X360 would), it wasn't compatible with the old HDD and moving it even slightly while it was running a game could ruin your disc forever. And the shop only had the 4 Gb version, so I had to buy another HDD - could I buy a standard 500 Gb laptop HDD like with my PS3? Nooooo, I had to buy a special "microsoft X360 HDD" for twice the price and only half the size. And the controllers still didn't have built-in lithium batteries.

PS1's had faulty lid latches that broke a lot. Went through several of those.

PS2's had problems reading disks after a while due to the laser height getting out of balance. Went through several of those. PS2 slims brought back the faulty lid latch problem that the PS1's had. Never bought a second one, just switched to Xbox.

Xbox decided to send the laser through my Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory disk, gouging a circular line right trough it. Never bought a second one since "next gen" was right around the corner.

Xbox 360 gave me a black screen, while still retaining audio. Couldn't see what I was playing but I could hear it. Bought a second one and it RRoD'd the day after the warranty expired. Bought a third, performed black magic voodoo ritual. Still works...for now.

NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube all still work. In fact, some of my old cartridges stopped working but the consoles haven't.

Built my current PC back in 2007. While it needs physical upgrades to better handle more current games, it's never had a single problem other than Windows freaking out and not loading the screen properly a few times.

2 360's one from a RROD and one suddenly stopped reading anything. 4 360 wireless controllers. Also, years ago the turbo duo got fried because there was too much plugged into the outlets. The day the turbo duo died was a very dark day.

Every 360 I ever had conveniently RRoD'd just before the warranty would expire.

I got so tired of it and that's why I moved onto PC (oh how foolish I was for not moving sooner)

Never had any problems with my 360, i had my current one almost 6 years in November. I had one previously but my baby brother broke it, it would still play games but would show up black and white. Guess ive been lucky with my consoles.

My PS2 slim got to the point that, after only about ten minutes of use, whether it be playing a game, a movie, or a CD, would overheat, lock up, and freeze. And by overheat, I mean I needed to move it off of the wooden coffee table it sat on because it was causing discoloration.

Other than that, no other console I had broke down. Then again, 90% of the consoles I've owned were Nintendo consoles, and those things are built to last.

I've had a PC failure (motherboard died, but it was about 7 years old, so it owed me nothing)

My gamegear needs the capacitors replaced but I lack the knowhow to do it myself (as i can't solder and they are the original capacitors)

but both of these are age things, i've never had a new console (within 2-4 years old) fail, i think i've been very lucky over the years

I had a master system with a dodgy pause button a PS 1 that basicly just wore out, it would still play games but wouldn't play cut scenes without stuttering and it took twice as load to load as normal.
My xbox 360 RRoD'ed on me and the xbox slim I bought to replace it had a dodgy fan so I had to return it for another one on the same day I bought it.

I also had about 5 pc's die horribly on me although some of them were just test rigs made outa really old parts

I've had 3 360's all RROD on me within 12 months of me getting them, the last time it happened i gave up and built a pc. And before anyone asks about ventilation they all had good flow, more than what my pc does.

My one and only PS2 died a few years back. It would be able to start up, but nothing else. It just wouldn't read discs any more. I never got round to getting it repaired.
Last year my original PS3 died too, as it started giving me the overheating warning after seven minutes of playing. I replaced it with a slim model with about 100 GB more memory space, but I do miss the old version.

My first store bought PS3 had a faulty HDMI port which I only found out about 2 years in, sent it to Sony and they were nice enough to send me a refurbished 60GB model, which YLOD'd on me within two months, then I got my third PS3 which held out for about 4 years and then it YLOD'd on me. Haven't bothered to try and repair it yet, not that many games I want to play now anyway.

Aside from this, my PS1 has a peculiar problem where the lens guidance system is worn out, making the lens slightly slanted, meaning that it gets frequent disc read errors. Easily fixed by putting the PS1 on it's side though. Might buy a new one some day and replace the lens portion of the console.

I had the Blu-Ray drive give out on one of my PS3s. I sent it away to get fixed, and as is standard practice they sent me a refurbished one... That didn't work. So I contacted them again, sent the new one back and got another one. That one worked... for about a minute before it crashed and wouldn't turn back on. So I contacted them again, and the got sick of hearing from me and sent me a brand new console. Haven't had any problems with it yet, and the Sony staff were really apologetic and helpful about the whole situation.

My 3DS is a little broken at the moment: the L button is intermittently unresponsive. It makes some games hard to play or unplayable... Sometimes it works perfectly, sometimes it takes a few presses/pressing it on a certain angle to work, and sometimes it stops working all together, only to spring back to life the next day. The fact that's intermittent means I haven't bothered to get it fixed, I figure I'll wait until it either gives up for good or a 3DS hardware revision happens.

This is not really on topic but years ago when I worked for Sega I remember going to the dump with a van load of faulty Sega Saturns. We tipped them in a big pit and watched a bulldozer run them over. Whenever I hear broken consoles, I think of that day. It was weird as a gamer and (at the time) game collector to watch stuff like that being trashed. But if it's broke, it's broke, watcha gonna do?

On topic, I've had a 360 Red Ring twice and a Dreamcast develop the controller fault (which was an easy fix). Everything else is still going.

Back in the ole' PSP days, mine used to die frequently. First I accidentally broke the screen (my fault) but on the replacement the analogue messed up, and even in the neutral position the game thought it was going towards the bottom right. This made Monster Hunter much harder. I replaced the thing several times and on every single one it did the same thing. I don't know if I was playing wrong or something...

Yes my xbox 360's...Currently on my 5th and final one is laying under a pile of junk as I couldn't be arsed to get it fixed/replaced again.

My Master System, Mega Drive, Dreamcast, Gamecubes, Gameboys, Original xbox, PS1,2 and 3 all still work and not had a problem with any of them...But that 360, urgh...

My PS3 YLOD'd shortly after purchase (shortly after launch), so I sent it in for a replacement. When the replacement came a few months later, some bright crayon had dropped it on its corner so there was spiderwebbing across basically the whole thing from the one corner. When its replacement came, having taken its sweet time, it lasted me a good long handful of years, and YLOD'd about 2 years ago. Then I got a new one, and although it isn't backwards compatible in the slightest, at least it doesn't double as a heater.

I'm kidding of course, I miss the whirring.

The NES we had broke down at some point, but apart from that all my consoles work like a charm, even the old SNES.

My first gen 360 RRoDed on me after about 6 months. It was preowned and looked a bit battered. Thankfully the Elite came out like 2 weeks before so I bullied GAME into letting me have a bunch of money off one.
My Gamecube died about 4 years ago of Nintendo not making games I wanted to buy for it.
Yet my 10+ year old PS2 is still chugging away like the day it came out of the box.

The Bluray-reader on my PS3 gave in last week, after about 3,5 years of use. It is the first console I've owned that has broke down however, which is pretty impressive considering that my first console was a NES and my old Sega Mega Drive II still is in working condition (in itself a miracle considering the abuse me and my sister visited upon it in our younger years).
