Did cadets for a couple of years and decided my life isn't worth throwing away for some petty war so no thoughts of me joining the military.

As another Finn I'll be starting my service in the Defence Forces in January as well. Just to add to what my countrymen here have said, it's not totally compulsory: nowadays you can also go for civil service, which is basically a year of community service. Going through the army is more common, though. Also, those who go into officer training end up on two different levels: half become corporals and half sergeants 1st class or second liutenants.

Personally I'll do the military service rather than civil service for several reasons: firstly, as said here by others, you aren't going to be pressed into active duty unless Finland is invaded. Which seems pretty unlikely. Second, it used to be, and still is somewhat considered as a sort of rite of passage for young men. And I wanna experience that. Thirdly, all my male relatives up to my grandfathers have been through the higher officer training (their dads weren't very high ranking, but they all fought in the Winter and Continuation Wars against the Soviets 1939-1945 so that's another order all together) and I'll be damned if I let myself come second to them in that respect!

To sum up my reasons: not nationalism, no military ideals, just curiosity and a sense of competitiveness.

War however is human nature. To not have war is to be inhuman.
To not have war is to be intelligent and wise, when how much people would suffer is considered.

To have war is to be stupid and acting out on hate and anger. The Goverment is meant to keep the peace not to go bombing, all goverments should be out there to stop harmful wars, there will always be violence, but violence on a mass scale is redicolous.

I would not join the military even if they brought in conscription for war, I would rather go to prison than be shot at.

Edit: If there were no wars going on and it was standard/compulsory to join the army for a year or two at 18 I would do it but not if I am going to be pushed out onto the front line, I say this because it would teach the large swathes of teenagers in England so god damn respect for once.

Respect for what, though? Respect for the power of a 5.56 round is no necessarily the same as respect for all those things you need to respect to be a proper part of society.

Hell, the Kray twins were conscripted.

You will never ever catch me joining the military.

All this stuff about 'Honour' and 'Serving your country' is bullshit.
Besides, it's going to be more glaringly obvious that all these wars are fought for is oil...
American's doing the world a favor by taking care of that piece of shit country.
Wow. And there I was thinking this forum was populated by nice people.

I can see the reason why people would want to, but I personally have no interest in the military whatsoever.

Mainly because I don't like dangerous conflict altogether and avoid it in any way possible. Some people would consider me a coward for that, but I don't really care about that.

Mad props though to people who do it though.

Where's the oil? "These wars" were not started over oil. If they were, we'd have oil pouring out our fucking ears. The war in Afghanistan was a direct result of the 9/11 attacks. American's doing the world a favor by taking care of that piece of shit country. The war in Iraq was about neo-conservative nonsense, turning the region into a pro-US democratic mini west and all that horseshit. I wish the Iraq war was about oil. That's clarity of thought I can get behind. Go in there take their shit and get out. That is why you start wars.
Well if I started a war for my personal gain I sure as heck wouldn't tell everyone it's about that, I would dress it up in something patriotic, fight the evil dudes, save the world, for freedom and god! ... kind of thing.

OT: I was in it for a short stint just as the conscription age came to an end, and when the time to sign up or leave came our CO addressed us one last time: "If you got any prospects at all in life go with those instead."
And most of us did.

Eh, I've looked into joining the military. But my ideologies are too strong.

For example, If I was sent off to fight in the current war in Afghanistan, then I'd have a serious problem trying to justify what I was doing, as I don't agree we should be there.

Questioning what I was doing would lead me to do some silly things I'm sure, and as it is a warzone, it could cost me my life.

So joining the military has always been an interest, but nothing more.

The Kray brothers were both metal, the majority of people are not. The discipline learnt during the army training would likely change a lot of the teenagers on the street today, hopefully to to see that they were behaving like a bunch of twats.

It's always been a condsideration for me. There are many benefits to joining but unfortunately, they don't pay for laser eye surgery, which sucks, 'cause I was kinda hoping they would, 'cause I fucking hate glasses.

They pay for sex changes, but not something that would actually help their soldiers? Army, I am dissapoint.

That was a joke, by the way.

Sure. I'd totally like to throw my life away for a country that i don't actually support because i view most of the politicians as white collar criminals for some college budget that i can get by lending aid to local industry and letting the absurdly huge American military fuck right off.

That was sarcasm in case you didn't notice. I'm an objector to military action in general and won't be enlisting anytime soon.

Affirmative. I'm joining the Royal Australian Army as a Rifleman in August (I'm joining up with a mate, and I have to wait until then) not as an officer though, I don't want that responsibility just yet. I want to have experience before I have to lead.
I'm joining the Royal Marine Commandos after university. I agree though, I'd never go in as an officer. Give me all the theoretical training for it in the world, to me, that doesn't mean anything about your ability to lead.

I'm not planning a permanent career, but I guess I could change my mind, and if it turns out I'm good at leading, I may go for the officer qualifications. Big if, though. I'll probably just do my few years, move to America and raise the wolf cubs I've always wanted.

So I realized the other day in my JROTC class that a crap ton of people I know are either enlisting at the end of the year or going to college for ROTC to become an officer. Anyone else doing that? What makes you want to do it? What branch?

Likewise if there's any non-US posters are you joining your nation's military?

I'm personally trying for Army through West Point.
I'm currently serving... Does that count?

The navy pays for laser eye surgery...as far as I know most branches do. At least in the us.

I'm actually considering it after college before I go to Law School. If I were, it would be the army. I get motion sick to easily, so air force and navy are out.

Im strongly considering joining the Naval Reserves for the money, experience and most importantly the Montgomery G.I. Bill. I want to go back to school, get my GPA in order, then try to get into DigiPen. I could never afford that school, even with grants and student loans, so the military would be my only option.

A lot of people mention that the military will pay for schooling before I even mention my motives, which is pretty cool. Im glad to see people pitching that for the incentive it is, because there are those that look down on people like me who are just "using" the military to get a free education. Personally I have many reasons to "use" the Navy to achieve various ends. Military experience would auger well for a career in VG development since it is a prevalent theme in many games. Computer Science is a huge occupation in the navy. I have a mortgage to pay and need money. I really don't want to go back to cooking full time, and Im not worth over $10/hour (in Maine) doing anything else. Also, when I get old, I wouldn't mind being able to go the the VA hospital for my checkups and such like my father was able to do.

To boot, Im an intelligent, motivated and physically fit individual. Also, I like boats.
