I used to play a lot. I've still got my cards, but the popularity of Yu-Gi-Oh! has diminished in my area. Sad to say, Magic is pretty much all anyone plays around here. Not that there's anything wrong with Magic, I just don't want to get into collecting another card game.

No, I believe that would be poker (trollface)

On a serious note, I certainly doubt that, as Magic has REALLY been increasing in popularity over the past few years, and it's existed for quite a while before Yugioh was even thought up. Never played yugioh myself, so I really can't comment on it having more strategy than Magic...but as someone whose played it for years, competed in large tournaments, and still play on a weekly basis, I find that hard to believe.

...which kinda makes me even posting in this thread pointless. Well on an almost related note, seriously, if there was ever a time to get into Magic, now would be it. You can literally go to your local card store (assuming they carry Magic), and ask for free starter decks. Yea, Wizards of the Coast literally just gives out free cards (to an extent) to get people into Magic. They're still money sucking devils, and I still hate them for making the "mythic rare" rarity, but hey, giving out free stuff seems like a good way to get people into a thing.

I got linked that a couple of months back. Dunno if its still accurate, it says it was last updated in 2009, so could be wrong now. Think its still right though.

Never played MTG. Might try it if my hobby store does the free starter thing, that sounds pretty cool.
Huh, well that is a bit surprising, and at the same time, I can kinda see how it would sell that much. No offense to anyone who plays, but it does appear to market more to kids than most other popular TCGs, excluding pokemon, ofcourse. Anywho, I stand corrected, and will now edit my post so nobody else feels the need to inform me of this.

I prefer playing the psp/ds games because I can't afford the cards and I'm bad at deck building so I don't wanna burn money on bad ideas. But it's fun to play :D

Well I don't play Yu-Gi-Oh! anymore, but I was pretty into it when I was a kid. My parents could pretty much hold boosters over my head as an incentive and I'd do just about anything. And while I do think it's a kids' game (the mechanics are really too simple at times), it's what got me into TCG's and, by extension, Magic. So I guess it will always have a special place in my heart.

Also, to those that have been saying that Magic is too expensive, try using proxies. My friends and I make them with the massive number of junk commons we have and it's a blast playing with Top 8 decks without having to pay, I don't know, some $500+ per deck.

It's a good game. I used to play at a weekly tournament thing but then the place closed so they're just sitting there gaining dust. Original season ftw!

There used to be an anime store near where I live where I'd go play once a week, but when it closed down, we didn't have a place to gather anymore. I guess that was about a year ago or so. I still enjoy playing the YGO TCG Video Games though.

i was more into collecting and trading the cards rather than playing. But that was probably because no one i knew could even come close to beating me, i think i was the only one that actually knew the rules.

Now all of the cards are my brothers, and they're gathering dust in some cabinet who-knows-where.

I used to play, back when I was a kid and had little to no appreciation for strategy. Unfortunately, I don't have many of my cards anymore, so I don't really play except for occasionally with my friends' decks.

It seems that Yu-Gi-Oh is decreasing in popularity while Magic is soaring. Around here, there is basically no tournaments for Yu-Gi-Oh, and very few of my friends still play, and the ones that do play it on the side to Magic.

I just want to add for those that are confused, that the card game is based on the manga, where the card game had no set rule; they just bullshitted them as the plot called for it. The rules for the actual card game are heavily based on Magic, but it was aimed to be simpler.

Nope. Magic is my geeky card game of choice. And most Yu-Gi-Oh players are half my age, so that'd be a little weird...

I used to, but not anymore. Man I hated some of those trap cards especially Trap Hole, Mirror Force, and Black Hole. You would be kicking ass then boom everything is gone and you are screwed.

I'll still play a round, but at 18 in the middle of the woods, I don't get the chance often, still got all my cards and a handful of decks, including a a gag human wave tactics deck, as you might imagine, it doesn't always do well. http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Human-Wave_Tactics

Also play some Magic, though I only have my 1 deck I got for my birthday.

As for the strategy and depth argument, I say they can both be decently to really simple to 5 card chains that react in ways a mad man had to think of.

The problem with being a long-time player is that a lot of old cards are becoming obsolete. For example, I got the world championship 2010 DS game and found that cards with 1600 or 1700 attack were usually level 3 monsters. Back in the beginning 1700 was considered impressive for a level 4 monster to have.

I still collect them (have a shit ton of ultra and ultimate rare's, including all the Yu-Gi-Oh 5d's "Trump Cards", Yu-Gi-Oh! "Trump Cards and Yu-Gi-Oh GX "Trump Cards"). I would play them competitively so they aren't just sitting there, but I have no local card shops at this time that run weekend tournaments or the like, unfortunately.

For some reason, the card game became a bit popular amongst Track players. So my two best friends (being part of the track team) also got into it. Years ago we used to collect the cards but didn't really know how to play, playing now, it is so much FUN!

I bought a Starter Deck (Dragunity Legion) and a card pack (got Red Nova Dragon on first try, now just need to get Red Dragon Archfiend to use it) and started to play with my friend for the first time, and while I wasn't very good at the start, it suddenly started to click and become a lot of fun.

Anyone else still play?

Also anyone know where to get Red Dragon Archfiend?
Does anyone play Nerd-Di-O? Seriously, dude, that's a twat's game. Play something real and not inane, please. For fuck's sake, really? Yu-Gi-Oh? We're not twelve anymore, kid.
Play something real? I am pretty sure its real. Also its fun, also why does age matter? What, becuase it has a stupid show?

I love the escapist where a man with a monkey ape superman pic from a show aimed at kids can call other people childish.

It's a funny world we live in.
Aimed at kids? They show dick in dbz... Even so, Im not gonna lie, I watch courage the cowardly dog regularly. :p
... I only saw half of a season of dbz and it was a long time ago on cartoon network. I HIGHLY doubt they showed dick on cartoon network.

I've heard the original Japanese version is different, but I'd bet money that you saw the american version before the uncensored one.
They actually did, Dbz uncut anyone? Yeah, I saw both as a kid. Still watch it from time to time.
I think one of my roomates used to watch some version he claimed was uncut. It may have been subbed and not dubbed though, so I'm not really sure what it was.

I think he might have pirated it too. What an idiot I'm against piracy altogether, but when you do it over a universities network your asking to get caught.

I love it. I don't collect the cards, but still play semi-competitively. I use the online systems. Much cheaper, but still a ton of fun.
And to all of the people saying that it is for kids: Why are you in this thread? To insult people?

I use to play it back in the day when it was nice, simple, and not convoluted with broken cards and combinations.

Now I had wanted to start playing again when the nostalgia bug bit me awhile back, and I just decided to mess around with Yu-gi-oh Online(though now I guess from what I see of the shortcut on my desktop it is on it's third version).

I only spent a few dollars on there to get the starter decks and a few random packs, and after that I decided I would just stick with what I got. Now when I was playing the game back in the day, when I stopped playing I don't think Dark World had even been implemented yet, but playing with that set online, I saw that it wasn't too different, it played with the same sensibilities of the original game, but then I encountered the newfangled cards of today.

Back in the day, Yu-gi-oh games always lasted several turns at least. Now, with the convoluted new cards, if I end up going first, meaning that my opponent will be able to attack me immediately on his/her first turn, my opponent if his/her deck gives them the right cards on their first turn, they can finagle a win against me on the first turn.

What gets me mad is that in the online game, they have banned many of my favorite cards, like Rageki, Dark Hole, Monster Reborn, etc, etc. I've read the reason on why they were banned, but they are really bull crap reasons. There power would definitely not allow for winning in the first turn of play.

But while those are banned, things like the blackwings, and tuners, and such are allowed to stay free and unbound. Such decks are practically unstoppable, unless it stalls and the player can't get the right cards(which is hardly ever) or the opponent of such a deck is playing with a deck that is almost exactly the same.

Another thing about those cards, for example the tuners, even though tokens say that they can't be used as tributes, since tuner summoning isn't counted as tribute summoning, tokens can be used for those summons. It can hide behind the word "tuner" but I still consider it tributing, so I think it is wrong and broken.

Oh, and synchro cards, those are crap as well.

The reason all those new cards and rules mess up the game is because it changed the game from what it was about, it changed the dynamic of the game.

In the olden days, we just had plain monsters, effect monsters, and fusion monsters, but the dynamic of the game was that a player couldn't just win with monster cards, there had to be a balance of magic and trap cards as well.

But today, with the new cards, magic and trap cards me practically nothing. The blackwings, tuners, and synchros, pretty much all come with built in effects that combat or get around magic and trap cards.

People on here have talked about Magic: The Gathering, well I also played that. Now that is some deep card play, but it has balance and things can be countered and defended against. In Yu-gi-oh now, if fight against the cards I mention and you aren't playing those types of cards, you maybe have a 1% chance of winning.

For the most part Magic is balanced, Yu-gi-oh was pretty balanced back in the day as well. But as I saw it then, Magic was for long games with deep strategy, and Yu-gi-oh was the relaxing game that was simple and quick, games were quick(though still lasting at least 8 or more turns), and strategy was light, and usually was made up of no more than 3 card combos at most anymore was insane, but now it isn't hard to see a player go through half their deck in one turn and win on the first turn.

In the end:

Today's Yu-gi-oh is broken. Until it gets back to its roots and style from when it first was created, it will be game that has become a bunch of failure because it tried to change into a game that it isn't. The first step would be banning the the new cards and card combos that I mentioned. And reinstating the old ones that were banned.
