To anyone else still interested in playing it, http://www.actiondistrict.com/ is working on a private server, they may get some assistant from what is left of the RTW staff in the form of software. Who knows? I just know I had fun playing it, I don't care what others think.

Well, at least my last few minutes in the game were spent doing what I loved the most- driving through the streets of San Paro like a maniac [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFc2tSdgML8].

I hope those private servers come to fruition. This is too good a game to let die on the vine like it has.

Aah how sad to hear. :(
Never good when a game falls apart this quick and the developers are hurt.
Hopefully everyone at Realtime and those laid off can land on their feet.

I bought and played it for a month. It was slick, but suffered from very limited amounts of content - for any genre, but especially for an MMO. There were also some equipment balance issues, and fundamental exploits that players could abuse to the detriment of anyone who didn't abuse them.

I'm going to assume the timing wasn't expected, as this is pretty telling:
I actually went to their website to check the message, and upon reading the "End of Era" headline, I saw that message below, which was about a new patch for the game. The interval was like just 1 day... My mind went "Wait... What???"

Jesus christ! Years of hype and only 90 days alive?

Shortest life span of an MMO ever?
I guess they're taking Tabula Rasa's throne for what it's worth...

Bit annoyed at my wasted money but since I only bought the game and didn't pay my subscriptions (sold cash on the AH for APB points to keep playing) I probably got more out of it than most single player games gave me.

Like I said in a thread on gaming discussions it is a big loss really, the game had a lot of potential and if they were a bit faster and smarter about removing the game breaking exploits and balance issues it could probably have survived.

Guess if I feel like playing the game again I could probably find a private server.

Probably because Australians were excluded. That's the best reason I have. Not that I was actually interested in the game at all. Just sayin'

This. But we were promised extra content and bug/exploit fixes before the end of the year.

Personally, I feel a little fucked over, having paid for the game. And have it be available for three months.

It had plenty of potential.

Fuck.
Agreed - and I still have RTW points in my account. I was actually going to play it this weekend as well, as I felt bad for not having gotten my money's worth from it yet. Whoops.

Actually. This is a much funnier combo of images on their front page:

Perhaps should have kept their web developer on staff a few days longer.

I know the game had a lot of critics, but I played it for most of it's run and loved it. It had a lot of potential and I'm very sad to see it go. Hopefully this will get picked up again down the line and re-vamped; It's unlikely, but we can hope.

Absolutely ZERO sympathy for the company. Being a huge fan and supporter of Crackdown, I followed the creation of this game from its announcement, and they originally planned it for 360 and PC, they courted every major Xbox magazine in the UK, and even months after they announced it was going to be PC only, they still granted interviews to those magazines, never once correcting them. I'm guessing their tactic was 'any press is good press'.

Many console fans felt cheated and misled as we were tossed to the kerbside and the lure of filthy lucre took a hold. Maybe if they'd stayed the course and not alienated a whole sector of their demographic they wouldn't be in the position they're in now. It's no real loss anyway, BrinK is simply stepping into the void Realtime Worlds decide to vacate - and with much more content, attention to detail and class too.

So...serves 'em right. You reap what you sow.

Right, I'm off to play Crackdown 2 online on my 360.

Ok, so now give us the part half of us actually wanted the game: the character customizer. Seriously, my little sister, who won't touch FPS online or off wanted me to get this game for her so she could tool around in the character builder forever. Sell me that and a single-player version of the game client with AI bots, and I'd give you at least $50.
I agree. I wanted to get this mainly because of the customization, if this was turned into a saints row clone or something; it would probably sell extremely well.

Same boat as you, man. It's both a shame and a kick in the balls.

Guess they should have agreed to work on Crackdown 2 seeing as the original was well recieved instead of making a game EA even admitted was doomed before release (or at least canned it when they realized this). It's a shame, I really like Crackdown; not sure about the sequal since I never played it. I abandoned the Xbox after the third failure which was before its release. Heard it wasn't very good anyway.
