When you get down to it, Aperture has a freaking amazing range of advanced tech. Bioengineering (the giant chickens), the portal device, cryogenics, brain uploading, artificial intelligence, emotion and robotics, the ability to cancel out momentum or whatever the hell those boots do...

I've noticed something
Chell wasn't wearing boots in Portal, she just had somethings attached to her shins. I don't know why, maybe they slowly broke down till there was nothing but those shock absorbers on the shins.
