If modding is illegal then lock me up! I doubt that modifying your iphone will be more then a $50 ticket. If they threw people into jail for that shit then people would be executed for j-walking!

Well, if Apple can declare modding your property illegal, I'm declaring all DRM illegal. Has about as much actual weight in law, and makes more sense. :)
You just earned one bigass cookie right there.

I'm sorry, but why would apple be such a jerk about this?
They're making themselves look bad...

Fear, uncertainty and doubt? Apple has all these about the size of it's penis.

Pretty stupid move on Apple's part; even if it makes sense it still portrays them as arrogant and opposed to user input (nothing new here)

as was mentioned earlier

I remember those Mac PC ads where they tried to portray the mac user as a happy young teen and the PC as an old man in a business suit... I actually sympathized more with the old fart then the self-righteous hip little douche.

Maybe thats because I actually, you know, WORK with computer instead of observe their functions from afar.

once again the fatcats reach for the bugel of injusticw to declaire war against those which choose the have a choice! If apple claim it can damage handsets and whatnot then it's the users choice. It's like with anything with a viod sticker, the sticker comes off then they company has no control over what you do and claims no responsibity. Why can't it be the same with the iPhone?

As previously stated, its a matter of more money for the people with the power, and less freedom for those with the technology.

Even more reason why I love my Windows Mobile device. What a load of crap, and what a "fuck you" to developers by forcing all apps to be distributed ONLY on the Apps store. I will never understand why people keep blindly following Apple with all the shitty products they make and lack of interoperability. The "Our way or high way" mentality of Apple didn't work with their computers back in the day (I love how they buckled and went to the Intel Chipset) and it is destined to fail once these phone developers get their act together and finally make a phone with a decent web browser and touch screen abilities.

Even if its made illegal, it it actually going to stop anyone doing it? I think not, they can moan all they like about how your a bad person, but they can't really do anything past that, remember kids its only illegal if your caught.

I can see why they're doing it, and really, they have every right to. You are allowed to ban people for modding your copyrighted product. If it's in the T&C, you have to abide by it.

But I still hate apple. I bought an iPod, and regretted it after being messed around constantly by iTunes. Then when you have one of its products, it tries to force you into the rest of them. And I hate it.

That and the fact they're overpriced.

Wouldn't call them the lesser evil, just the dumber evil.

I think of Apple like a stereotypical supervillain (say, Magneto) who sits in a massive chair, brooding and plotting, while one arm is slowly choking a baby to death. Then there's Microsoft, an equally evil villain who is capable of even more atrocious things than Apple, but only when they get passed the simpler things like how to put on their costume.

Apple would off Microsoft if he could, but MS is his wife's brother, and he'd get no intimate time if he did so.
You just summed up the difference between Microsoft and Apple far more succinctly and humorously than I ever could have, causing much LOLications in the process. You win one (1) intertubes, good sir.

So if I have an iPod Touch, basically an iPhone minus the phone and aforementioned contract, am I allowed to do it?
Pretty much no because it's still the same deal, someone reverse engineered the firmware that makes the device run which is illegal. Technically early modding in games like Wolfenstein 3D and Doom was illegal too because it required the programmers to reverse engineer the game code to make the tools but Apogee and id were much cooler about it than Apple because Apple is run by a douche.

Don't you just love it when you pick something out at the store, bring it to the checkout clerk, are hynotised into signing a terms of use agreement in blood during your purchase and then having you memory erased of the whole event and taking on nonconsentual legal obligations? Thank you apple. By the way, if you work for apple and are reading this, it is against the law for you to enjoy a refreshing beverage and not get punched in the groin by an enraged chimp. Just thought I should let you know that, sense you DID agree to it and all, by just reading (making use of) this paragraph. Nope, sorry, too late. Your legally obligated.

I'm a big fan of apple and have had an iphone 3G and 2 ipods (over 5 years) but I mostly agree with what most people here are saying. Still, they're not as bad as Sony when it comes to the PSP. They actually updated the software solely and specifically to prevent people from jail-breaking it.
Still, most of the time the big companies see what the jail-breakers are making and add it legitimately unless it'll go against profits.
