"Appropriate" Phone Backgrounds

Appropriate has different meanings to different people
I know people who would tell me my lock screen is "inappropriate"
And that my background is "inappropriate"
Even though technically, neither are.

Both are just an actor I like. And I honestly can't be arsed to change either right now. Nor do I have anything I want to.

Sometimes I'll make my lock screen background this

But I've been too lazy to put that photo back onto my phone to put it as my lock screen again. Until September.

But appropriate comes down(to me at least) of "is this something I'm going to be embarrassed about if questioned?"

And all my phone backgrounds have always been a resounding no for that question. If it's a no then it's appropriate. If yes then you might want to re-consider.

Good god that's a bad picture OP.
Why?

And I suppose, according to the opinions in here that I shouldn't change my background for the summer to this:

I guess I'm not sure what I want to put as my background then.

I think what Pluvia means OP, is that it's generally considered a bad picture to use as a background due to its risque nature. That it's in 'anime/manga aesthetic' doesn't help as it may more easily make people who see it (and are unfamiliar/uncomfortable with that kind of style) think you're weird or some kind of deviant or something. Especially because of the exaggerated proportions of certain attributes that you seem to favor in the pictures you've posted so far :p

Personally, I think of phone backgrounds as part of what can be considered your "public face", or part of the image you present to the world at large. It's your phone of course, so if you don't mind the assumptions/snap-judgements people can and do make about people around them, then best of luck to you, use whatever background you want.

I'd never use something like that myself though, if I can't use something as my computer-background at work I generally wouldn't use it for my phone. I usually prefer for my boss/colleagues to not ostracize me.

How could those be considered inappropriate Blow Pop? I don't understand that at all.

I choose my backgrounds on the foundation of "If your parents see it and don't get weirded out, then it's okay." As long as they're SFW and you are okay with showing your parents without getting embarrassed, then I would say you're good.

I've been watching The Office, and I have come to admire the almighty face of Jim Halpert that indicates his feelings of bottled up remorse and anguish.
This background references a show I like without being obtrusive. When people look at it, they don't think "Gee, this guy's a weirdo." They think, "Hey, that's neat."

As for the OPs image, well... I'm sure you would get a weird look from a lot of people with a picture like that. Maybe find something a little less... robust?

Wouldn't having a backround like that be distracting? I would hate it if every time I opened my phone I was needlessly and inconveniently aroused by it, and thats apart from what other people could potentially think of you things.

Real girls in swimsuits is one things, some will look at you a little funny for it but its generally accepted. Anime girls I feel would come with more condemnations because know instead of being a "normal" person who likes bathing-suited babes you some sort of weird perverted deviant getting off to vulgar iconography from the Far East.

Sorry that sounded a little too dramatic.

That said, OP, I admire your courage. I'm much to afraid to be judged a creep to have any female as my backround let alone a buxom anime lady. I salute you.

I try to make sure my wallpapers don't freak people out. I don't have a problem with something like OPs, I just wouldn't use it.

As a furry, I've been trying for a while to find wallpapers that are furry and are subtle enough to make people not freaked out by it. And mostly failing.

At the end of the day it's really down to what you're comfortable with people seeing on your phone screen. I do know a few people that have/had pinups as their background. I generally choose pictures of women that show less skin, at least, when I'm choosing designs. That or something abstract or nature-themed.

I seem to be on a slight anime kick at the moment. If I think I'm going to be around people besides friends I might change my backgrounds to something more neutral since while the images themselves don't show much, both of those shows can be... interesting to explain.

You'd probably get fewer questions with a vagina bodypaint orchid for a background... at least that's dubious, artsy perversion instead of blatant hyper-idealized stuff.

Personally, I use photos from around my house... stuff like this [http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n182/loc978/Photos/AMBA0093.jpg] (though not that one specifically).

Like half the home screens posted on /w/, I don't really get why you'd choose something so sexualized when your friends and family are going to see it. Whatever floats your boat/quenches your thirst I guess, it's your phone after all.

I normally use art based on my favourite games and anime series. I don't have anything very risqué like you OP, I get enough questions about them as is. The closest would be my tablet which has this picture:

My phone has a similar pic to this one (can't find the actual original but the pose is the same):

That's cropped so Rise is vertical in portrait view.

At the end of the day though it's your phone, do what you want. I wouldn't use something tittilating personally because;

1. Don't want to have people judge me for it
2. That shit isn't for when I'm out and about :p

Hey, put whatever you like as your background but in terms of taste, it's questionable! Just imagine the opposite, a girl with a phone background of a toned guy with a 2 foot, veiny, throbbing erect penis ... it would make for some shocked reactions, to say the least.

Your picture is really grotesque, those breasts are at least the size of large babies! It will make on lookers certainly think a little less of you, it is "playboy: the hyperbole edition", Hentai version of big 'n' naturals etc. You're probably a nice young boy, who helps out and is respectable, then they look at your phone and BAM cartoon porno! Like finding out your late 40 year old neighbours, whose lawn you mowed to earn a few bucks are swingers ... it makes you reevaluate them.

It's kind of like freedom of speech, sure, you can say whatever you like but don't be surprised when your ass gets fired or you get called a perv.

Its not from a show; it was just some art I found that I like and wanted to use as my background.

People really shouldn't care about what's on your phone.
Unless it's something highly "you should seriously be on a watch-list" disturbing I guess.
But they do. So I guess you're just gonna have to decide if you want to put up with that.

I guess it depends where you work, or who's going to be on your phone besides you.

My background rotates.
Some are NSFW, some are SFW.

It depends.

This is one of those I points where I get why someone would find that inappropriate but then totally disagree. I mean yeah woman with tits shocking people like that. They want to point to that as why is is not appropriate yet would not mind if it was an SI swimsuit cover. Franky the idea that this is "Not appropriate" is likely more style than substance. A photo of a serialized female is fine because we see that all the time but in animated form it is not kosher because that is different.

This thread made me get off of my lazy bum (metaphorically) and change my lock screen/background from my wholly inappropriate Christmas one..

to this..

As nice as that picture is, it's not exactly 100% SFW. My personal policy about desktop and phone backgrounds is that, if it's not something that I'd want just anyone to see, I won't set it as a background. I wish I could use that sort of stuff, because there are a lot of really nice, but fundamentally questionable, backgrounds out there, but if I did, it'd make things unnecessarily complicated for me. I'd rather not have to deal with any people judging me.

When it all comes down to it, though, it's your phone. You can do as you please with it.

I think that as long as you don't use bigass tits or anything like that. But it's more of a matter of whether you're ashamed of having a nice set of tits as your background. I would, but then again I'm not ashamed of having this [http://iscoppie.tumblr.com/post/58240418058/jon-wins-based-on-my-animation-of-his-glee-you#notes] as my cellphones' backgorund.

Well I look at that picture and I think it's one of the only forms of birth control that's 100% effective. Condoms? 99%. The pill? 99%. Massively unrealistic big titted anime girl proudly displayed on phone screen? 100%.

And I don't even know you. Imagine what your parents or work colleagues think when they see that. It shows a distinct lack of social interation skills when you carry around pictures, that other people are likely to see, which reveals your wanking material.
This is what I mean: Do you care about the impression that image leaves on people who see it? Sure, you might say no now, considering we're a bunch of people who you might not even learn their real names. But when you hand it over to someone who you might be interested in knowing and that person sees a big titted anime girl, it might change their opinion of you pretty drastically.

I have mixed opinions. As far as I'm concerned whatever you set as your background is your own business. The way I see it is that if someone close to you is going to be shocked by you having some soft porn/eye candy as a background chances are they shouldn't be that close to you anyway. If your here on "The Escapist" chances are your a geek, and the eye candy goes with the territory more than a lot of people might want to admit, and chances are your mother and peer group aren't going to ne exactly shocked if they borrow your phone.

The biggest issue is going to potentially be if your background is seen in a work environment, which can get touchier. As a free speech advocate I don't think anyone should be able to hold that against you, but they can. Still, for a cell phone it's probably not a big deal unless your in a situation where you might be needing to show people things on your phone frequently.

I don't see anything terribly wrong with the OP's image to be honest, it's just a drawing of a sexy "swimsuit girl" albeit highly stylized (Anime), and to be honest swimsuit pictures have even been "stock" on some phones and such when they come pre-loaded with background options or sample photos.
