Are there any good western films?

You can't go wrong with some Clint Eastwood, obviously the man with no name trilogy is necessary, but personally I think High Plains Drifter and The Outlaw Jose Wales are his two best Westerns, though Pale Rider and Unforgiven are quite good too.

The Magnificent Seven is pretty good, a remake of the Seven Samurai. Also the Proposition is an interesting film, an attempt at an Australian Western with bushrangers and the outback.

Not a film, but Deadwood is a damn good Western TV show.

And I second Unforgiven: who better to subvert the genre than the man who, for many, defined it.

hell, just start watching them, some are silly but they made films what they are today, and influenced whole genres (ever heard of a space western? Star wars is one)

The Outlaw Josie Wales, True Grit (both were good, screw you for not liking John Wayne XD), the Dollars trilogy, Shanghai noon (more of a spoof on westerns, but hey, it was good) Two Mules for Sister Sarah was another pretty decent one, and that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

I am going to give another +1 to Magnificent Seven, True Grit, and Tombstone.

Technically it is a Samurai movie in the guise of a western but Warriors Way was fun. Don't expect anything serious, it is heavily stylized and kind of corny BUT I enjoyed it quite a bit

Pretty much everything I was going to list has already been listed. So I'll just add this:

If you're looking for a good western, give AMC's new series Hell on Wheels a watch. It started slow, but it quickly became pretty damn good. I'm hooked. (seems to happen a lot with me and AMC series)

Three words.

Sukiyaki Western Django.

A Western movie that's actually a retelling of the inception of Feudal Japan, complete with Katanas, six-shooters, Lone Gunmen who can stop swords with the trigger guards of their guns... and Quentin Tarantino as the narrator explaining to us how this weird, crazy version of Django's origin story actually unfolded. The classic Western Frontier Town gets meshed with quaint Feudal Era Japanese aesthetics in ways that are surprisingly solid.

If you can get past Japanese actors sometimes working their way around actually spoken English with some trouble, you're in for an awesome ride.

Plus, I don't care if I went against the thread's topic, but it's a Takashi Miike movie.

Takashi Miike.

You cannot go wrong with this one.

For some reason, the new Western's were all very appealing to me. I'm a sucker for a good Western.

Open Range has probably one of the best shoot out scenes of any genre of all time.

Appaloosa was alright, a little boring.

True Grit remake was a fun movie.

3:10 to Yuma remake was fun to watch.

And not technically a Western because it takes place in Australia, but The Proposition with Guy Pearce was an engaging movie. Pretty dark all the way around.

Well there's different kinds of Western (they're not really my thing, so I can't really name all of them)

Try...
Comedy: The Three Amigos
Spaghetti: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly series
Classic: Anything with Clint Eastwood--in perticular Unforgiven
Black and White: Stage Coach
New: 3:10 to Yuma

There's more and probably better Westerns but those are the only ones I can come up with without fishing for some old film study syllabuses.

You might also look at The Magnificent Seven (remake of The Seven Samurai)

This is one of my favorite movies, but make certain it is the 1960 version with Yul Brenner, Charles Bronson and Steve McQueen and not the fairly recent and pretty terribly disappointing TV series.

Also, for expertly-done parodies of westerns, what you want is
The Three Amigos and
Blazing Saddles.

You do.

Oh, and Rango was shockingly good, too.

It's very weird combination of Western, SF, comedy and Steampunk, but The Adventures of Brisco County holds a special place in my heart.

Yes! That's a great show.

Well the only movie that I haven't seen suggested yet that I'd recommend is Quigley Down Under.

Everybody seems to love the man-with-no-name trilogy, and for good reason. True-Grit and 3:10 to yuma are also good fun.

Yes it is a westen despite being a Korean film. By all means I haven't see it but I want to and from what I've read it got good reviews.

I rented it from my local video store like 6 months ago.
It's pretty good, but it's really damn long.
So long as you're prepared for a long watch you should go for it.
