So i was wondering this , after thinking about batman, in Arkham assylum , the Joker is the main villain , but he has 'supporting' female villains ( Harley quinn and poison ivy ) .

So my question is:

Are there any Video games where the MAIN villain of the game is female?

also for discussion value , would you like to see more female villains ( main villains or supporting villains ) in video games. Do you think it could add to video game story telling? Why do you think the 'bad guy ' is most of the time a male ?

Final Fantasy VIII had one.

Can't think of any others. As for whether or not I want to see more of them. I've never really cared or thought about it that much but, I guess it would be good as it would add more variety to the gaming industry.

Why are they usually male? Perhaps it is because (and this is the answer to everything about the gaming industry) that throughout the history of the industry the main demographic has consisted of males or so statistics, general experience and opinion say. The companies producing said games probably believe that men cannot handle the idea of women being the main antagonist and would much prefer and more easily relate to, a male antagonist.

Primary antagonist of FFVII wasn't really Jenova...

OT: Portal.

As for why the bad guy is usually male, I think in a lot of cases they could be female and have zero effect on the plot.

System Shock 1 and 2 with Shodan? Technically an AI but spoke with a female voice and face and was very female (concerned with Offspring etc)

Edit Also the First Max Payne the Antagonist was a female corporate type

We seem to be coming up with quite a few examples here

Mario. You're essentially pitted against Peach and her utter stupidity every game, which is the ultimate obstacle for Mario.

The main antagonist in Destroy All Humans! is female, however, this isn't revealed until the very last mission where you face her.

Spyro: Year of the Dragon features a female antagonist too; The Sorceress.

They're the only two games I can think of off the top of my head, but I'm sure there are others.

Earthworm Jim comes easily to mind. The main antagonist was female - an alien, but a female alien.

Uncharted 3 looks to have a old woman has the main boss.

System Shock and System Shock 2. Not only was SHODAN female, she was one of the most terrifying and memorable villains of all time.

On a similar note, Portal had GLaDOS. Metroid Prime 3 had Dark Samus. Female villains may be less common, but they're certainly not unheard of. Still, seeing more of them might not be a bad thing, since female villains tend to be quite memorable - you never forget SHODAN or GLaDOS.

As for why the gender of villains is skewed, well, the gender of all characters is skewed. That probably has a lot to do with it. And of course, it's not a phenomenon unique to videogames - the same goes for movies, presumably because both game designers and filmmakers are predominantly male at the moment. But hey, that's probably going to change before too long.

Hell, if you count Atris as having joined the Sith Triumvirate by the end, not just is the final Big Bad a villain, but half of the non-generic villains in general are women.

Saw the video game has Amanda.

Not sure if this counts, but Dead Space 2 has the marker, who takes the form of Nicole.

VTMB has Mei Ling.

No More Heroes has Jeane.

Gears of War has The Locust Queen.

Thats all I can think of right now.

He said FF VIII, not FF VII. Just so you know. He's talking about Ultimicia.

Anyways, I can think of a few:

BlazBlue
Bayonetta
No More Heroes

Persona spoilers:

Persona 4
