Are there song covers you prefer to the originals?

I believe there was a thread similar to this a year or so ago, and it occurred to me as I was listening to this cover of Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song by Demons and Wizards.

Hansi's vocals really lend it a fresh edge, not to mention the guitar-work.

5 seconds in and I already had to stop it. The guitars sound absolutely awful, standard metal pounding. Blergh.

You didn't even get to the best part, the overuse and abuse of POWER CHORDS!

It may be that metal isn't your thing, but it could also be Jon Shaeffer's guitar playing is universally considered terrible nowadays.

And now, THAT RIFF!

To be fair I do enjoy iced Earth but it's all too clear Shaeffer built his entire repertoire from one central idea and almost never deviated.

Common People by William Shatner, his version adds some nice undercurrent of disdain for the girl from the song, giving it a much better fitting vibe.
Shatner's singing carreer had a lot of misses (one of which I will post shortly), but he nails it with Common People. The whole Has Been album is actually pretty solid to be honest.

Graveworm's cover of Fear Of The Dark is bloody amazing, if you like that sort of stuff. Putting some violins and bagpipes into a metal song just really works for me.

And now for a silly one; Shatner's Bohemian Rhapsody. I wouldn't say this one is better, certainly not on an artistic level. But putting this song on when you're with some friends and you're all drunk/high, it's a fuckin' laugh riot, and for that I simply love it.

Yes. Lot's of them.

I don't care what anyone says, this man's got some incredibe talent in composition.

Bet you were expecting the Hendrix version.

Nope! I actually prefer Bear McCreary's cover over both the Dylan original and the Hendrix cover. The echo-y tones and the sitar give his version an other-worldly feel.

I love Jackson's original, but I just feel like AAF's cover adds some much needed "energy" to what is lyrically a dark song.

The dulcet sounds of the cellos make this song feel more emotional and grandiose. Quite a feat, given the original.

As emotionally powerful as the original was, Cash's cover is doubly so. You can feel the pain in his voice.

A adore Hans Zimmer's soundtracks. Most of them, anyway. But there's just something about Tom Holkenborg's cover of these two songs that I love. I especially like the 80's-ish guitar-riffs and beat, as well as the switch-up from a six part melody to an eight. It's almost like Inception meets Miami Vice.
Gonna leave it at these for now. I've done lists like these before and they always end up being waaay too long.

Well... uh... there is this one Glee cover...
Yeah... I still can't believe it myself...

(And every other cover I would have mentioned is more or less a "remix" in some way, shape, or form... like the song Luna by Odyssey Eurobeat...)
Glee.

ironically enough a lot of 'judging you' gifs are from Glee.

let's see,
Placebo's Running up that hell:

I still like kate bush's version, but this one has a different 'feel' to it.

and Disturbed's Land of Confusion:

Also comes with a nice animated music video

The guitars has nothing to do with why that song is great. Hansi, the singer, is the reason it's fantastic. Fuck Jon Shaeffer, he's a subpar guitar player and a douchebag and a half if there ever was one.

OT:

Such Great Heights with Streetlight Manifesto, originally by The Postal Service.

Quite a few....
I tend to like the 'original' song I heard more than later versions but that's not always true. A couple of examples:

Part of Your World - Skye Sweetnam (The Little Mermaid)
Brown Eyed Girl - Everclear
Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal
Come Sail Away - Cartman from Southpark
Waving Flag - Haiti version
Total Eclipse of the Heart - http://www.wimp.com/entertainingcover/ (two random people I don't know)
I'll Be Missing You - Puff Daddy

That's all that comes to mind but I'm sure there are plenty of others.

That's why I only really listen to him in Demons and Wizards. It seems being with Hansi got him to do some much higher quality work.

I don't really listen to covers, i get enough of that out of my guitar playing lately. Last one that I thought was alright would be this
Avenged Sevenfold's Cover of "Sad But True" by Metallica
What do you mean they're different songs?! They sound the same!

Most of the ones I like have already been posted. But this cover by Dead Sara of Nirvana's "Heart Shaped Box" is pretty good. They have two versions. The rock cover stays very true to the song but I enjoy it all the same because I love Emily Armstrong's vocals.

The Stone Coyotes--Paranoid (Black Sabbath)

But then, I hate Ozzy's vocals.

Annie Lennox--Whiter Shade of Pale (procul Harum)

Dar Williams--Better Things (The Kinks)

A good chunk of the songs covered by the Beatles. It's a long list

Marylin Manson--Sweet Dreams (Eurythmics)

Johnny Hyde--Tainted Love (forget the original artist and author). Yes, I like it even better than the Mason version.

Moxy Früvous--Psycho Killer (Talking Heads) and I've Gotta Get A Message To You (Bee Gees), both live versions. I don't really like the Bee Gees, so that's obvious, but I think I prefer the approach MF does.

David Bowie--Cactus (Pixies) and Pablo Picasso (Modern Lovers). Bowie tends to make songs his own. This is especially true of what he did with Pablo Picasso.

Joan Jett: Road Runner (Modern Lovers). Joan is a little more coherent.

The White Stripes: Walking With The Ghost (Tegan and Sara) and that's really weird, because I'm a fan of Tegan and Sara but not so much the Stripes.

I could probably go on. I don't have a problem with the concept of someone doing a song better, and it's not as rare as people make it out to be.

Does anybody ever listen to what other people post in threads like this? They always seem to be "Me! Me!" threads.

So anyway, you should all watch/listen to MY pick:

EDIT: And just for fun, here's a terrible cover:
I love you, Tarja, but this is just really awful.

Thom Yorke's cover of Roxy music's "2HB." (Which is hard to admit because I love love love Bryan Ferry.)
Rush's acoustic cover of The Yardbirds's "Heart Full of Soul."
Matthew Good's cover of Dead Kennedys "Moon Over Marin" is equal to the original.
APC's cover of Failure's "The Nurse Who Loved Me."
& when I don't want to admit that I like ABBA, I insist that Marshall Crenshaw's cover of "Knowing Me Knowing You" is far superior. (But I don't always mean it.)

EDIT: Rebekah Del Rio's Spanish-language cover of Roy Orbison's "Crying."

That does not surprise me, honestly...
Which reminds me... I prefer Glee's version of Umbrella... (slightly...)
I mean, I never was a fan of the original by Rihanna (despite only liking Jay-Z's edit, at most), however I would be lying to you if I said that I wasn't singing along to this version... (despite always preferring the original "Singing In The Rain" from Gene Kelly...)

I have to say I love A Perfect Circle's cover of Imagine (John Lennon), which is good as I love the song lyrically, but never liked a think Lennon or The Beatles did.

I also like the cover Maynard James Keanan and The Flaming Lips did of Elton John's Rocket Man
