Well I used to be able to.

And then there came MLP explosion, and then they all blended together.
Srsly.
One day, everyone had normal, easily identifiable avatars.
Next day, every reg's avatar had the same damn pony in just a different color.

I don't even.

And then I gradually stopped coming here that often, so there's that too.

Yes, through various means and reasons but I tend to switch off if they have an animated or My Little Pony avatar.

I can recognize the regulars by avatar, and the more famous ones by username.

I'm primarily an RPer, which means I've got to know the surly crew of regulars [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/The-RP-Regulars-definitely-not-the-3W-Stalker-Club#] pretty darn well. I know their styles of writing, the subjects they prefer, and the kinds of genre's they like to play. I recognise people by name and avatar, such that when an avatar is changed, I am not confused, but I find it odd for a while.

On consideration, I doubt I'm a very good representation: the Role Playing leads to far larger amounts of contact with the same people, so I'm bound to know my fellows pretty well...

I'm sure a few people could identify me from my avatar. Ya' know, the guy who's always using the Protagonist from Persona 4?

I'm not sure if anyone besides Redlin5 recognizes me, but I do know when I on the IRC, someone yelled "IT'S THE SPICE & WOLF GUY!" when I said hello.

As for me most of the time i recognize users from their avatar. A handful i recognize the names (most of the time those are people that or post a lot or i had a run-in with them(good or bad))
