Are you actually good at gaming?

to be honest it all depends on the genre, and even then the individual game.

but in general yes i would say i'm a very good gamer. my uncle gave me a sega genesis when i was 5 or 6 i believe. so i started out playing golden axe, lost oasis(think thats what it was called?), and of course the sonics :D.
i'm solid at 2d fighters and stealth games. also not to sound cocky but i'm ridiculously good at shooters(pending on the game) and rpgs.

now rts games tend to be my achilles heel. not because i'm stupid and can't strategize, but because with all the micro/macroing and shit like that, i just don't want to waste my time mastering one.
oh and i suck at TRUE survival horror games despite loving them :3

If I truly take the time to practice and learn how to play, then I become very good at the game.
I suppose you can say I am an alright gamer, but you will not see me enter any kind of competition or the like. Now, if I go into more specifics I am an alright RPG player. I know how to base what I want to level up, and how to equipt items and attachments at certain times, but that is really just because I can try and figure out how it is best to move on early on. I do not think and RPG game would be the best example of good gaming though because honestly how you determine the wellness of someones RPG game is based on what skills you like or how you like to play the game.
I suppose if you move on to first person shooters, I can say I am alright. I am excellent at first person shooters that happen to fall under horror. The reason for that I don't quite know, but I assume it has something to do with me being so scared I shoot at anything that moves, which is a good way to survive in a horror situation.
Racing, it is a craps shoot. I can play some games well, but usually it is just out of luck or aggressiveness in my racing style. However, if the race requires skills like drifting or using handbreaks on hairpin turns, I am not going to win anything anytime soon.
Puzzle games I can say I am great at if I take my time. Usually I will rush in and lose, but when I find patients I usually place high on the leader boards if there are any.
Button mashing games I tend to never get good at, because it never really gives me a reason to need to unless I move up on the difficulty. Only few games do I ever get good at, but those are the games that I actually cared to try to do something beyond button mashing, which in turn are the ones that I will try to play on hard just to see if I can.

I nearly always play a game on it's default difficulty, really because it tends to feel more balanced and natural, more like the way the game is meant to be played. That said, I'm an effective gamer if not necessarily always good, as in a get the task done, but not always how I intended. I was playing Deus Ex: Human Revolution and "Sneak across room without attracting attention" became "Murder everyone".

I'm normally good enough to make it through the campaign of a game. I will not let an AI beat me. Not many actually challenge unless on the highest difficulty and even then only rarely.

Online gaming is a different matter all together. I am not exceptionally good at online but normally scrape an at least average performance. It is also not uncommon for me to fail miserably. The problem is that others online are all people as well and my reactions and planning just aren't that good to predict real people.

Overall I'm an average player teetering on bad overall. I don't practice regularly because I don't care massively about winning and don't like camping or holding a single area, which often leads to my death. I also don't like refining it don't to a repeated pattern of the MLG player.

I'm a bit casual but with battle games. Just playing for fun.

I'm a terrible sniper, but i think im better at the clandestine, covert-ops stuff, kinda like the Salarian Special Tasks Group from Mass Effect. I think of myself as a strategist though i suck at chess, but thats what i think im good at, and im good at gaming in general, i THINK. other people usually outdo me, but im really good against AI.

never done sports games, but very few games at which i suck horribly. shooters and action/adventures for sure.
and mario kart. DAMN im good at mario kart!

Depends.

- I can get good at twitch-based shooters, but it takes some practice on my part. And I just don't care to do that anymore. I don't find them fun.
- I'm not very good at tactical shooters. I lack the patience and, again, lack the desire to practice them. Again, generally don't find them fun.
- I SUCK at RTS games. It's the micro-managing that I suck at. I can focus on one or two things at a time, but it all falls apart if I have to deal with 5 parties in battle, focus gathering resources, building structures, buying upgrades, and levelling my hero character all at the same time...
- I also SUCK at fighting games. Probably because I never block, and really just use one combo over and over again...
- I rule at racing games... mostly because I rule at driving in real life, understand the dynamics of different kinds of cars, and know how to get around a track efficiently.
- RPGs... is it possible to really be "good" at an RPG? Definitely my favourite genre. But, I don't think I'm particularly good at them. Really, all it takes is time usually. I suppose turn-based RPGs require some skill. Which is probably why I'm not very good at them.

I don't know how good this makes me, but I can pretty much breeze through Mass Effect 2's Insanity mode on my Adept. I'm also adept at online shooters and Civilization: Revolution. Give me a racing game and enough time to find the cars I like and I'll hold my own.

Fighting games, I'm not sure. I don't THINK I'm good, because I don't play that often. But, every time I go online in MK9, there's a good chance I'll walk away winning. Maybe that's because when I play I get lucky and get matched up with idiots.

Hitman: Blood Money. Honestly, it's pretty fucking hilarious watching me play that. I AM SO FUCKING BAD AT IT. It took me about thirty tries to finish the first mission, and any mission after that. Unless I load up with an M4 and my trusty pump-action, then I can finish any mission first try... and leave an absolute mess.

I literally can't remember a time before I started playing videogames. The earliest I can remember is playing street fighter at the local arcade against my mom at age 4. And yes, I always kicked her ass. That makes at least 12 years of gaming.

The games I've always sucked at were the ones where the physics made it feel like I was sliding around. I need direct control over when I start and when I stop. I suck at Mario and just about every Asteroids clone I've ever played.

Also, because I got so close to saying it and the OP mentioned the game... ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL.

I suck at some games but am pretty good at most others. For instance I have yet to beat a single GTA, but I beat portal 2 my first time in like 4 hours.

I am not a great player. I enjoy games on normal thank you very much.

Mass Effect 2 with those big stupid robots...those fuckers ganked me every time. But when I drop the difficulty "tadaaa" the game became fun again, rather than making me want to controller spike...

Give me any RPG and I'll wipe the floor with most people, yet I am probably the worst person you will ever meet in FPS. I consistently miss enemies when I'm playing Nazi Zombies with my friend.

Im pretty good in most games, but I am beast at shooters and RPGs. Strategy and warfare also average at, and racing too. I am a downright fail to the JRPG industry and thats it.

I am alright at gaming but mostly I don't get puzzles and I usually end up just button mashing on bosses. I've been gaming for a while but I like games for their story rather than the actual game play (considering I only have a Wii) but I am pretty good at shooters that require aiming and I am really good at strategy games. I can take a desolate little town and turning it into an empire in no time on Civilization games and things of that nature.

I consider myself a bit above average in shooters and average in everything else except for most sports games, at that point I just push random for everything and run around hoping I'm doing something right. Not quite sure what other players think of my playing skills, it's not something I ask others.

Define good. And for every genre.

Starcraft 2: Rank 8 (out of 100) in our division for team 2v2 (where people go for lols) in bronze league (worst league) So while we are in top 10 its watered down loads.

Battlefield: KD is 0.7ish and run up and arm charges ect. So while I play well (or atleast I'd like to think so)it doesnt show in stats (im a sloppy joe)

I'm only good in RPGs and multiplayer in FPS' like Halo and and COD. When I play single player in anything but most RPGs, I have to play on the easiest difficulty, and then normal. Sometimes I then play on the hardest in co op.

I think I'm pretty good, except for RTS multiplayer. I suck at that stuff. I used to be really really good at BFBC2 but I got out of practice. Same with League of Legends (damn you, college!)
