So this year for Fathers Day my family decided to introduce my father (forcefully if nessicary) to tecnology. My Mom got him a cell phone and gave him her old iPod.

Now tecnology and my father have not gotten along very well, if memory serves it took my Dad a good 2 weeks to learn how to use the remote for the TV, and I haven't even taught him how to change the imputs on their HDTV.

Needless to say this step into tecnology is a big one for my Dad, and it might possibly get on my nerves. All and all though I still love him eventhough I'm usually embarrassed to be around his tecnologically daft self.

So I'd like to hear some stories about your blumbering, and amusing fathers, or even what you did for him this Fathers Day. If you haven't done anything or your out of town give him a call.

(Note: I'm typing this from my parents computer at their house which dosen't have spell check, so please forgive me.)

I don't see any real room for discussion, but I'll add to it anyway.. my dad is currently trying to learn how to use facebook. He hasn't touched a computer since the invention of the internet, so it's quite painfully hilarious.

Me and my dad have a special bond... were we make fun of each other even when members of our family we haven't seen for years are around. And people ask me why I'm a dick well I thank my dad for that.

Actually, my dad is more technologically adept than I am! He works in the electronics department at a warehouse store, and has all sorts of cool gadgets - one of which is a PS3, so I got him BioShock for father's day (yep, world's best son, right here).

I love my father but sometimes, I don't know, he just doesn't pay attention. For instance, when I first got my xbox 360 I was still undergoing treatment for cancer so I couldn't move around much, and I asked my dad to help me set it up.

"It's very simple" I explained "The PS2 is currently plugged into input 1, so all I want you to do is follow the red, white, and yellow wires for the PS2 and unplug them from the back of the TV. Then, just plug the wires from the xbox into the same place where the PS2 used to be plugged in. Just make sure you put the red wire into the red hole, the white wire into the white hole, and the yellow wire into the yellow hole."

"Got it" replied my father, "but is there anything you want me to do on the back of the TV?"

"Yes" I said. "I want you to do what I just asked."

"Oh, sorry. Can you repeat it?" My father said back.

I repeated what I said very slowly to make sure he understood. After I did he seemed very confident and went behind the TV to do what I had asked. After ten minutes of fumbling around he yells back "Justin, I can't figure it out. I'm going to have to unplug the Playstation 2."

GG, dad. GG.

My dad is has his XP computer set to windows classic theme as he's scared of having to learn to use a newer version of windows.

And I haven't done anything for Father's day because he's buggered off to France for a holiday by himself leaving me and my mum in charge of the entire farm. I don't really get along well with him anyway..

Pops types via the hunt and peck method. He is flabbergasted by my rapid home-position style typing.

He also gets irritated with me when I walk him through the methods for 'doing things' on a computer. You know, all those little windows pop up and you hit ok without reading them... drives him up the wall. Don't you need to know what those are saying?... he asks, and of course, we all know that you pretty much know what they say without reading them.

I have my XP set to WIndows Classic too..

I.. don't like Windows XP, and I don't like being reminded that I'm using it.

But are you convinced all technology invented since '95 is out to get you and do all you can to pretend that it doesn't exist even if it means inconveniencing yourself quite badly?

Father's Day? Isn't that in Septermber? Or is it on at a different time over there?

EDIT

To stay on topic, I'll always remeber when dad went fishing at cut his arm open pretty goodly. He was spirting blood out in gushes and we needed to use a dirty fish rag to cover it. Frankly, my dad's a lot like Tim Allen in some cases and when the Ambulance arrived the two guys that greeted him were already quite familiar to him and called out his name in a chirpy manner. Good times.

My parents have cable internet, yet they still pay for AOL. I've tried. I've really tried hard to get them to lose the AOL service, and explained how they are wasting money, but they don't get it.

I am...ashamed.

I worked my ass off in 90+ degree heat for 4 hours pruning lilac bushes so my dad would have an easier time applying stain to our fence. My brother and I had even offered to help stain, but he apparently thinks we're idiots and declined our help.

He didn't even say "thank you."

Bought him a brand new $90 wheelbarrow, too, since his current one is LITERALLY falling apart.

No thanks for that, either.

Well, here in America, it was today, June 21st. Could be different Down Under and elsewhere.

EDIT: Bah, ninja'd!

No Father's Day stories here, since I never do anything for that.

My dearest Daddy is afraid of new tech, until someone explains how to do something veeery slowly, with numbered steps and so on. Then he enters his "I'm a tech-savvy Lord of the Chips" mode and promptly demonstrates his expertise to everyone... By doing this same thing over and over again, and refusing to try out anything new/different... Until someone explains how to do it veeery slowly... And so on.

The irony here is that despite being the least adept at everything computer/electronics related in my family, he used to be a massive SF geek (introduced me to SF in the first place) and he's got a Master's in engineering.

Well being Australian Fathers day was a couple months back here, but my dad is actually quite computer literate, he understands more than the basics and knows how to scan for and fix viruses etc. But there are two things he can't get his head around.

1) The fact that our internet is excruciatingly slow. We got broadband pretty early and back then 512/128 was considered pretty damn sweet, yeah um dad this is 2009. While all my friends have upgraded to ADSL2+ or cable my dad refuses to change anything, even though our contract is ancient and we are clearly being ripped off. What we pay a month (in the vicinity of $70 AU!) for this crap I'd at least expect, i dunno ADSL2+... Optus must be licking their lips at his stupidity.

2) Games. Especially of the Online variety. He hates them (especially Gears of War) with a passion and has often gone into drunken rages when he's caught me on xbox at 3am (on a weekend/holiday of course). He doesn't seem to be able to get his head around the appeal of shooting someone on the other side of the country (lets face it all that crap about playing with people on the other side of the world, anyone who knows anything, knows thats crap if you want to play a decent, lag free game) and then yelling abuse at them, all from the comfort of your own home. What's not to get?!

My dad is VERY advanced in technology. He actucally builds our computers.

Never has to call the techs either. Yay...:D

I really don't have any stories. Yes, my life is THAT boring.
