Art or science?

In my eyes Science is the most important thing ever. Now dont get me wrong art is very important but Science keeps us alive to appreciate art. That and theres some things science can show you that art can never hope to match! I dare anyone to look at and fully understand the size of the eagle nebular and not feel humbled in new ways.

Science is more awesome, I don't know about important. Science students are cooler and more down to earth than arts students. Even arts men want our science ladies, and YOU AREN'T HAVING THEM!!!

I think both are equally important to the growth of a society, but as for where my particular talents lie, I have to say art. Literary arts, at least.

Why is this even a debate? And not just this question, I mean the whole Art vs. Science malarky. What's with the 'vs.'. I've always loved both. I'm studying biological science, and in my free time I write draw and sometimes act. I'm equally passionate about both and I couldn't imaginr life without either of them.

I stand by this. Advancements in art > basically any current possible advancements in biomechanics, cybernetics, housing, and transportation. Perhaps different connotations once it's in proper context, but I don't believe I'm saying something entirely different.

Science is an Art
and
Art is a Science

Well, I'd say that the second is a lot less exclusive is the first. While there are scientific methodologies that can work to make true art, art requires interpretation. But then again, Science is an art, though that's probably just because of the open definition of what an art is...
But I like the spirit of the argument! A cookie for the good sir.

How is this even a question?

Sure art is nice, it helps us express ourselves and entertain others but that's about it.

Science saves lives, science makes our lives easier, science expands our horizons.

80% of the improvements of life expectancy in the last century are due to better medicine which is fundamentally based on science.

Art is not needed in science! Well, almost not needed. We did need to figure out that chalk can write on blackboards, but that's essentially it. Whether art or science is of greater benefit to society is also not a question for debate. The mere fact that somebody can read comments and add theirs here proves how important science is.
On a more personal level, I'd say it's a 1:3 mix for art to science. Curiosity spurs on science, and art relieves stress. I love music (classical), and I can appreciate the amount of work put into art. Still, no work of art will ever save people from disease, solve world hunger, leave earth, explore the subatomic realm, or build a network which allows some 2 billion people to interact.

Did I ever say that science is stupid and shouldn't exist? No. I'm just saying that the things that truly make people happy are, for the most part, "arts," and I would prefer a society that had arts but no science over a society that had science without art.

It might just be me but it would be hard to be happy when you're dieing at 35 from an excruciating illness that science can prevent, or starving because you don't have science to preserve your food.

Sure, I could be dying from a terrible illness without science. But I think I'd be happier to life a fulfilling life aided by wonderful art and have it end at 35, rather than have an art-less life and live to be 80 or something.

If you actually think about it you could not live or have much art without science. Humans do not have the capability to live without tools or shelter (science) and the only art that there would be is taking a stone a scratching it on a wall. There would be no fire for charcoal, no paint, no tools for sculptures and of course no digital art.

Art cannot exists without science.

Well said, and I second this motion. I'm an arts student in a family of scientists and mathematicians; I see both as important, and, honestly, we probably wouldn't have either one without the other. The mixture of imagination and logic is where the best discoveries and inspiration come from, in my opinion.

Not everyone can be a great artist, and not everyone can be a great scientist. Yet, anyone can become a good artist, and anyone can become a good scientist. With enough practice and effort that is.

Art. Art is fun, relaxing etc.

Science? Yeah it's good at saving lives, advancing culture. But I don't really care about advancing the human race to be quite honest. We're overpopulated and destroying everything with Science. I'm not even a vegetarian, and I suck at most "classical" art forms (painting, drawing etc.) but honestly, I enjoy it more than Science.

funny how OP tries to make this into a super philosophical an thought provoking thread, when in reality he has no Idea what he's talking about and the two cant possibly be compared in the way he describes. art precedes science giving birth to human culture, and often goes hand and hand with science advances. Science promotes art, and art promotes science, there for you cant say one is more important than the other. They are in different fields, and virtually incomparable in the OPs sense.

Science

Science is oftentimes as beautiful or even more beautiful than art.

Art is never as complex or beneficial as (modern) science, in my opinion.

Art can show you the appearance of man in a way that's aesthetically pleasing, science tell you why and how man looks that way.

any thing that can be beautiful. or is, is art... sorry but your point falls flat on its face, also no one said that science can't be art.
