It is interesting to see that Race X were more likely not native to the Xen borderworld, as they never established a great presence there. Perhaps they are part of another invading army that was held off by Shepherd closing the portal and ensuring the Combine's unopposed takeover of Earth - they are the Opposing Force - or maybe they're simply curious travellers.
