The vast majority of my family is deeply religious and I am not. Mind you; I have no inherent dislike of, shall we say, People of Faith. But my family took my rejection of their system of belief as a sign that I was completely morally bankrupt and possibly homosexual. Because they can't think of any other reason I might not want to go along with the things they believe in.

Like some of the other posters in this thread, I hate when people make sweeping generalizations about other people based on where they stand in the realm of their personal beliefs. I'm not an evil person because I don't believe in God. And I don't think that believing in God automatically means you look down your nose at people who don't. I think those are the assumptions that sadden me most.

I do tend to backlash hard against the people who do attempt to belittle me for my lack of Faith though. Which I'm not exactly proud of; but it's something I grew up having to defend near constantly.

That one's always a ***** to live with. I find going completely over their head with something makes me feel better. Especially when it's not true, but they don't understand what you say enough to question it.

Also, racial/gender humour makes you racist/sexist. I wouldn't say any of it to strangers on the street, but with someone I'm close enough to for us to know that it's just banter and not in any way said with serious intent then there's nothing wrong with a few non-pc in jokes.

Absolutely. There are loads of religious scientists out there (although by percentage, less than the general population), and many other theists with a good grounding in science. Just because some theists suck at science doesn't mean everyone does; and some atheists I've met definitely don't understand science. I think this stereotype only exists because scientists are far more likely not to believe in any deity (especially biologists).

To clarify my post, taking it too far would be going out of your way to have an argument. Something which a vocal minority are unfortunately prone to do.

It really bugs me when people see two sides arguing and automatically assume that "the truth" lies somewhere right between the two sides.

People coming into a long standing debate with no real understanding of the issue and believing that they can show off they're superior intellect by "seeing both sides" and "agreeing with both". Neutrality doesn't automatically make you right.

And the smugness with which this is usually done is unbearable to me.

Ahem. Not to say that there aren't actual asexual people out there, but I really doubt that the number is as high as people on the internet claim.

Same with self-diagnosed depressives, sociopaths, etc.

All of these types of people exist. They probably aren't as common as people claim they are and the people that pretend or self-diagnose these things are insulting those that actually have to live through it.

Additionally, the assumption that with age comes wisdom and intelligence or even experience. Age -can- bring experience, but how you learn from your own and the experiences of others is what shows wisdom and intelligence.
