Have you guys ever played a game and REALLY got attatched to a certain character, then if they have something tragic happen to them (eg: loved one dies, they die etc) it really gets to you?

Personally, I really liked Sgt. Griggs, then when he died in COD4 I sat there looking at the tv blanky, just like "what just happened"
and my mate really got upset when Gaz died.
what about you?

No, not really. Maybe in Mass Effect (spoiler warning) when I had to choose who lives and sent the guy whose name I forgot to death.

Probably the characters in CoD4.
you didn't put spoilers, but I suppose most people know by now...
I was so upset when I had to shoot Imran... he was a worthy adversary[/joking]

In Mass Effect, no question. Be it my love interest or my squad mates I genuinely liked them and genuinely cared about their fates and did everything I could to preserve their existance. Mostly because of great characterisation.
In fact I like them so much I am left to question whether or not I'll like the crew in Mass Effect 2 or not.

Your avatar and this other one with a little bug are in contention for 1st place in the 'most distracting avatars' contest.

OT: I'm just gunna get it over with... Aries from FF VII.... there, read it if you want.

Other than that i'd say i had a big connection with Tali Zorah Nar Rayya; i can't explain why, so thank god nothing happened to her. She was awesome.

It killed me (even though I saw it coming) when (I really hope no one STILL needs a KotOR spoiler Warning) Bastila went over to the Dark side.

Also, the end of the final (real) boss fight of MGS3.

That whole COD4 ending made me just sit there. Put the controller down and walk outside. It was truly fantastic but why did they all have to die? WHY?! WHY!?

Also when Benny Carmine died in Gears 2... The most hilarious yet saddening death ever...

This may sound strange, but in Mafia there was this safecracker you had to break into a house with to steal evidence. Despite how dangerous the situation was, and the fact he was unarmed, he always stayed level headed and just did his job. When you told him to follow you, he did. When you told him to stay put, he did. At the end of the mission, driving though the empty streets at night to drop him back off home, he said something about hoping we'd get to do more jobs together in the future. The idea of more missions with him instead of the bullet magnet Sam got me very excited, and it shows how deep the story sucked me in that I was really put out that he never appeared again.

I played Gears of War 2 with my fiance before he went off to basic training, and both of us got really attached to private Carmine. He was probably the most normal NPC you played with, and he was just such a delight to have around. Both of us were 'NOOOO, CARRRMINEEEE!' when he died. We were still saying stuff like 'Carmine would totally have [insert something Carmine would do/say here]!'

Mass Effect. Hoo boy Mass EFfect.

Also, as has been said before, KoToR. I got really involved in those characters.

I actually get attached to all sorts of silly things in game. In Halo I got really attached to the idea of having the marines around, not because they were useful, but because they always seemed so happy when I showed that I felt like I owed it to them to keep them safe. Since they were little more than red shirt bullet magnets though, this required some pretty inhuman protection on my part. I did once manage to keep three whole marines alive at the end of the first flood level though (on Normal).

CoD4 is a prime example of it actually. I love it when games can do that, it keeps me coming back for more, and definitely gets me interested in all titles by that company.

Yeah, I did get attached to the CoD4 guys - mostly Gaz. The ending although... unexpected and kind of jarring was still pretty inspired.

I was upset when Salvador in Grim Fandango died... uh, re-died, although his exit was heroic. That was ages ago though.

Almost felt bad for whoever gets left behind in Mass Effect. It was a pretty well-executed "decision" gameplay mechanic but even though I had gone into their backstories in depth I still didn't really "care" for them. It came down to a decision of who I thought was more fitting for a movie-esque twist like that and I settled on Kaidan because he fit into the "Tragic Hero" mould already. A shame though 'cause I found Williams to be annoying. I left her behind on my second playthrough. Bros before hos.

The time I didn't feel for a character who was given a way-too-awesome send off for who he was - Major Strickland in Crysis. Dude gets one of the most badass deaths and a cry of "STRICKLAND!" from Nomad and I'm like "Who?" He's just a guy who talked on the radio to me a few times and I saw in a tank once... I really couln't have cared less for him. Would have been a better idea if one of the Redshirts who died early on had survived and got a bit of character development and HE was the one who got heroicly stomped - but don't get me started on ways I could have improved the Crysis storyline.

Oh, it's most definitely Carlos (how do I do spoiler tags?) from SR2. Really saddened by his overly melodramatic death.

Everytime someone hits me with an Ink in gears 2 and my character (who is always Ben Carmine) coughs I just say "What were you saying about your helmet Benny?" And laugh... Best Character, most hilarious death, yet it brings a tear to my eye.

Games like Kotor 1/2, Mass Effect, Fallout 3, Spiderman Web of Shadows, SW The Force Unleashed, I got really attached to certain characters......yes that dose include shedding tears for them when something bad happened (literally).

Not everyone returns from the battlefield.

OT: As of late, I'd have to say that CoD4 has my vote too. Somehow, I felt attached to everyone, no matter how minor. When Deadly went down in Shock and Awe, I immediately went "We're going back, fuck the nuke." And what do ya know...

Maybe I got too into character when playing. :p

I usually get attached to the damsel du jour in video games, if only to give a damn about saving her. If there's no emotional attachment then I don't give a rat's ass about the story and the game suffers for it.
