OK my Escapist kin down under, if this passes I will visit your fair shores once in away bringing the gift of objectionable content. You won't be able to play online, but single player is better than nothing, no? We must stick together, after all.

Hey I did an oral presentation on this in class, (got full marks woo!)
And as far as I have researched, the internet filtering system of any sort, gaming or non gaming, is completely and utterly unworkable
I'd go into detail, but I feel like shit, so I'll sum it up by saying:
Internet users don't want to pay for it and don't want it
Internet providers can't fund it and don't want it
The government can't implement it effectively, our last filter was broken in 30 minutes by a 15 year old
It won't work
If they do it, it will fail and piss everyone off

After a long Hiatus, some soul searching, and what not I return to see... this crap still going on but far worse! I just hope I can stick to my promise not to become an argumentative, political driven arsehole I was all the while back then. I do have a few things to say on this topic...

Why the hell can't my home country just get a 18+ rating and be done with it? Oh yeah, it would then have NO EXCUSE to pull this, gags at the term, draconian bullshit! That is the sole reason the government is fighting to prevent a 18+ rating. Is it really a surprise when the people who are calling the shots are all 'blame it on the violence in games' morons who honestly believe they can make the world a shiny happy place if they got rid of computer games! These people are looking for excuses to get rid of more then just R18+ games but any game with 'questionable content,' which normally means fun to me.

In any case this group will NEVER relinquish the one loop hole they can use to ban any game: the unrated so defacto-banned loophole.

Now on the matter of loopholes we can remember these people saying they wanted to close one... of course it was the one that gave them more power over the internet! They are doing it already and will expand easily so we have to ask the question: How do you classify an online games?

A) Do you rate just the games engine on it's own merits without any other user interaction. For example, running the game in a closed network without anyone else connected.
B) Do you rate the user interaction as well? Logging onto a bunch of random online servers and rating a games based on how the other users behave.
Bonus Issue) Do you further rate the engine on it's ability to be openly modified by user content? Which... is about every damn online game out there and allows ANY content to be added to a game.

With how these people have acted which one do you think will be?
B and Yes on the bonus material I bet!

They will argue a game needs to be rated on it's fullest interactions and on all possible ways for a 'child' to be exposed to filth. I know it, and you know it, they will use that very excuse so they can use the interactions of a online community to negatively rate a otherwise ratable game. I know your thinking that is a bit nutty there but have these game nazi' given you a single reason to trust their judgment, to trust that they are doing 'what is best for us?'

The real nut case question I ask to myself is: Has Australia Capitulated to China while no one was looking? It clearly shows that the mentality that is ruling China is what we have in Canberra these days....

As we should all know by now, Australia is the only "developed country" without an R18+ [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/87288-Australias-Jack-Thompson] age rating for videogames
That made me laugh then I remembered, "shit, I live in that ****-ry"

I personally want to RAGE about this, but I've been doing that for the last 6 months and nothing has happened (the internet censorship plans just got more retarded). Instead, I see the fact that this story is not spread across the Internet as GOOD NEWS!

With over 6 years of experience in bypassing overly restrictive Internet censorship (school and university internet sucks in this respect), I know that this policy won't affect me in any way other than a mild inconvenience and even slower Internet than we have already.

The fact that the government is still trying to implement this censorship (the same party - Labor - opposed it in opposition, only 6 years ago) says to me that there is some unseen lobbying going on in the background. That there is a lobby group that would prefer Australia to be ruled by an authoritarian regime scares me a little. The fact that the government is listening to them scares me even more.

For starters, Australia is the best fucking country in the world (most of the time). Our politicians may be twats, but the rest of us are awesome.

I can understand internet censorship to a limit. Blocking kiddy porn... well i can't say i disagree with that. But as for everything else, if you don't want your kids watching or playing something then stop them yourselves, don't get the government to do it for you! that's just lazy.

I'm in Australia, and I seriously doubt it will happen, simply because of the ISPs, rather than the Government. None of the major ISPs support the nationwide filter that was proposed, so I doubt it would be any different here.

But I'm really sick of our government in relation to this whole topic. I just don't understand why there can't be an adult rating.

Meh australia aint all bad!!

This is just stupid if the senate doesnt block this i will cry. (or just find away around the firewall)

did the government have this argument already i.e. a few months back they wanted to put a filter in that stopped people going into pornographic website, violent websites etc and anything deemed irresponsible yet the communications companies said it would slow down the internet (not that its slow enough already in australia). Whats so different now,

Cant wait for another 15-20 years where people who grew on video games start getting into parliament.

nobody heard? censorship like china is the new thing!
One thing you need to know about Australia; we're the suck up country. We suck up to whoever is most powerful at that point. For an age it was Britain, since the end of WW2 it's been America, and now we're delving off into China. So think twice before you make that joke; it might just be true.

As for the topic, this isn't going to happen. It just won't; the entire country would revolt if it did.

If we have another bullshit censor, like what happened with Fallout 3 (morphine anyone?) I think we should take a stand.

They can't do this! You Australians have to protest... It's getting plain ridiculous...
Well it was ridiculous to start off with but you get my point...
