That fine only applies if the site is hosted within Australia. They're trying to find a way to press criminal charges on Wikileaks. However, this is against the law in the country wikileaks is hosted :p
The wonders of international convolution.

Oh well, 5-10 years till that yet, Oh and a nuclear Armageddon. Trust me on this one.
I am the last guy in the world to tell you not to accommodate for your girlfriend, but don't let her do that!

Why do people live in Australia...From the news I can gather that Australia is:Extremely hot, plenty of fires, floods, fires and floods, all the wildlife is trying to kill you, they get everything with delays, video game censorship and probably other crap...
Australlia is starting to sound like hell.
it seems it is still used as a prison colony: every aspect of your life is controlled and you can't leave
They have pretty shitty security than, since people could move out if I remember correctly.

Seriously, I think once a government starts doing shit like this, it's just not doing it's job and should be destroyed.
your name is also mine. That is a disturbing coincidence, fortunately for me I can just import them if I did move over there.

It should be noted that while Australia seems to be the new poster boy for internet censorship...it has one of the largest bittorrent userbases (yes we pirate a lot) and the Federal Police have stated in the press many times that they have no plans to pursue small time users (i.e. everyone)...

Some facts seem to have gone missing here:

1. the filter is still under trial (it is not law yet)
2. None of the major ISP's (you know, the important ones) are participating, and those who are are only letting customers use it on a voluntary basis...not forced
3. It was a hard sell in the senate BEFORE the blacklist was leaked...now it is even harder
4. Christian groups are presuring for TOUGHER legislation, and may oppose the bill in its current form because they feel it isn't tough enough (as was promised)
5. The Australian senate is a clusterfuck...the government doesn't have the majority and rely on third parties and independents to get legislation through...Xenophon (an independent) has allready proclaimed its failure

In short: the filter will not be passed

I really don't know what to make of this.
Surely, banning everything the Australian government deems to be offensive from the internet would be impossible?

well the security is keeping the inmates ignorant of other people left on the planet: "china? why would you want to go to china? nuclear explosions and tigers, maybe mutated pandas too! you dont want to go to china." and the poor sap that wanted to leave the country for a much more free nation went back home

as evidence that this technique works: i have never met an aussie
against: they are allowed to communicate (for now) via letters, internets, phone...much like a prison...

Pretty much this. I would be extremely surprised if they pass it. However the fact all this money is being wasted on testing and crap, when other testing has proved it will not work, is what really pisses me off, there are much better ways to sped it.

......Why would ANYONE want to go to china? They censor shit more than australia. Also, America does that kinda shit too, acting like every other country in the world is a disgusting shit hole where you have the same or less rights than a dog does in America.

I have never met a british person IRL.

if the only way a prison keeps you in is by saying "please don't leave, we're the best" and giving you a device where you could find the contrary, it's a prison with bad security!

sad thing is, I could take them to court with only my highschool level of law studies and win. because an internet filter violates the constitution. We didn't vote for it and a govourment exists to SERVE IT'S PEOPLE
Maybe you should read Australian Constitutional Laws. There is very little power 'we the people' have. Not surprising, as the government never was really made to even serve us in the first place. It is a document about how the states will come together as a unified country in service of the queen, detailing how that unified country government would then function. The only rights we Australians have come from the Magna Carta and that is more 'due process' over anything resembling the US bill of rights, something I am fond of myself.
Hmm, maybe a bunch of us Brits could go and try to get the Queen to use her super-monarch powers and bitchslap the Australian government. She seems like the kind of person who's down with video games...

I want to go to China, it would be nice to learn about their culture and language. Let's face it, China is the future, best to get with the winning team early.

If the future is full of censorship than I'll avoid it as long as I possibly could.

well i never said the warden was the best or had a perfect "no escapes" record...and i will admit that the leave Australia for china bit was a pure bit of exaggeration.

and as for information censoring/feeding in the us, of course it happens but some still cling to those document of a few hundred years ago and try to avoid making a public case out of censorship
so in the end it all boils down to public opinion, places that make a big public deal about censorship and turning free speech into the village bicycle are bad. places that keep it under the rug with the illigal drugs and porn mags are good

This warden is about as efficient as my dog.

...I don't get a single thing you said there.

id say more like a cat, lazy and docile until it sees a chipmunk trying to do anything

i was refering to the bill of rights (particularly free speech/press) and in the us how butchering free speech in a public manner by politicians would create a backlash so they do it behind the scenes

My dog is lazy like that.

Which they shouldn't. With the exception of yelling "FIRE" or "BOMB!" in crowded areas and plane.
