I'll suggest the same one I started with: Pokemon.

Really, if you've never played it, Pokemon is a game I'd recommend anyways.
This.

Pokemon is about as simple as they come when it comes to RPG mechanics. Of course that doesn't mean it's so simple it isn't deep as later Pokemon games show.

I recommend Demon's Souls. It's an excellent game for those who are starting out, not just for JRPGs, but for RPGs in general. It's a hell of a lot of fun.

Pokemon simple pretty. Pretty basic story and motivations. You could quite easily get into and play both for a short bursts or hard core long plays. Easy to get into but contains a pretty deep mechanics if you choose to delve in further, into types and attacks and all that and who is stronger than who etc etc.

Although I have only played a few they are good, and they are repetitively easy to get hold of.

I would recommend others but my mind is currently blank at the mo.

persona god damn 4, I still havent had a chance to really play it (why thank you battlefield 3/driver San Francisco) but from what i did see, the story is amazing...though its a turn based JRPG so not a great combat system.

If you have a 360, I would highly recommend Infinite Undiscovery (tri-Ace, making new words and then building a game around said words since 1995), its more of an actiony game but tri-Ace also do the star ocean series so...yeah.

persona 4 is on ps2 so can be picked up cheap or i think i heard about it being redone for ps3 but i didn't follow it due to only having a 360.

Dude, I don't care what anyone else said, the best game to get you instantly addicted and also show you one of the best parts of the genre is Chrono Trigger. It's not terribly difficult with little to no grinding and it's plot is epic and the combat is way more action packed with one of the first active time battle systems that also used your characters location on the screen to effect attacks.

Also, if you're into weird trippy shiz like me, might I recommend Earthbound. It's insane, and beautiful.

Of course if you like Chrono Trigger I'd move on to the Final Fantasies (Start with VII or VI, possibly IX. X if you need semi-modern graphics) or Chrono Cross, or possibly Dragon Quest though that stuff is sometimes painfully old school (maybe start with VIII). There are so many good ones beyond these mainstream series, however these are really the best introductions as the high production values and quality stories make it easier to adjust to JRPG staples like turn-based combat and random encounters which can be somewhat annoying (although I still love the levels of strategy open in the turn based games, with Dragon Quest VIII being in my opinion the best example because it was also rather hard at the higher levels requiring well thought out strategies.)

Oh, one other thought, as it was the first JRPG I played, and I'm sure a lot of people can say the same: Pokemon? The plot is garbage which is why I can't enjoy them anymore but the battle system was epic in it's depth, plus there is nothing better than fighting your friends with your characters. I wish more JRPGs would do this, I don't care if it means Cloud vs Cloud so long as the build is different and the winner still gets bragging rights.

Man, why can't there be a turn based Street Fighter RPG. =<

OH, and I forgot to mention, the best version of Chrono Trigger with a more mature translation and extra dungeons (that aren't that great to be fair) came out on DS a while ago. Let me put it this way: I sold my DS but I didn't sell my copy of this as I know at some point I'll get another DS pretty much just to play it.

Don't be dissin' the battle system, boy. It's beautiful.

It's one of the best turn based battle systems I have ever used. The mix of Pokemon and Final Fantasy is fantastic.

OT: On the subject of JRPGs, would anyone suggest White Knight Chronicles?

One word: Xenofreakinggears. Fun battle system, genuine challenging boss battles, and perhaps the most convoluted and batshit crazy while still emotionally engaging story I've ever seen in a game.

So, looked over the thread a bit as I'm slightly interested in this as well... anyone got a suggestion for a JRPG on the PC (something more recent, my tolerance for outdated graphics and gameplay mechanics is not too high :\ )?

Thanks for the recommendations peeps, had a look-see about.

I is only got PS2 (and a mid-range gaming PC), so we're looking at: Persona 3/4 (probably 4, I'm watching the anime, anyone see any glaring differences there?); FFX (largely because of someone =P ); FFVI ('cos of ZP, oddly enough...(!)); and Suikoden V.

... How're you guys with Oukami?
Don't start with Okami.

Also, you can emulate Chrono Trigger( get a SNES emulator, get yourself the Chrono Trigger ROM and party), not to mention that there is a PS2 version floating around somewhere.
there's a PS1 version, but the PS2 is backward compatible

for PS2 jrpgs?

shadow hearts is good.

gonna also say (IF you can get a hole of it)

FF 4, 5, 6 an 9
an breath of fire 3

Valkyrie Profile to, BUT, x.x some of the end game bosses are an exercise in 'faith based game play'(mostly just Blood Bane) but its fairly simple to get into, and its one of my favorites

The Last Remnant - it's pretty good.

However for the PC there is a better choice - King's Bounty. It's not Japanese, it doesn't have the standard JRPG combat, but it's pretty much the king of turn-based RPG's.

Hmmm, King's Bounty looks suspiciously similar to Heroes of Might and Magic.

I never cared one whit for JRPGs until I started playing Persona 4, now I can't stop playing..that game.

Seriously, I can't recommend any other JRPGs because that's the only one I have ever played, but damn is it great!

(Well, I once bought a used copy of Final Fantasy X from GameStop for around $10. I spent all of one hour playing it and then sold it right back to them for $2.)
