Bad Webcomics

I don't want to keep you here all day though, so I'll just give you the really popular ones that are terrible, and deserve to be taken down a few pegs.
XKCD, Questionable Content, Sluggy Freelance.

xkcd? Really? I find the majority of his comics to be hilarious, but I guess it is aimed at a niche and somehow became popular. I think he's trying to shake off his popularity by really digging into the math and physics jokes lately.

Questionable Content and CAD are...well both had flying starts and were very funny in the beginning but as time went on they deteriorated because both authors wanted to stick to their storylines as if it were gospel.

QC just got boring and CAD became unfunny and downright stupid.

OK I can understand XKCD - it's a little pretentious and big for it's boots but does deliver the goods sometimes

And I 2nd you explaining how QC in terrible, seriously it may not be your style it's not a gag a day strip but the art work is nice now its evolved and his writing both serious and comic is hard to fault and it's a real living story that you can't help be drawn into.

Opinions and assholes and all that, but I am going to call you on being dismissive of anyone not like QC. I read fucking loads of that comic. And yes, for a while it was quite good, particularly from around, say, 500 to 1000 more or less.

These days though, Jaques has stopped trying to improve his art style, whilst settling on the worst kind of almost uncanny realistic look. Frame composition is just as static as day 1, and hasn't improved one iota. But I'd forgive that if the storyline engaged me at all. It doesn't. He doesn't put any sort of real drama or conflict in the way of his characters, and they just have banal conversation after banal conversation. In the past people complained about his characters being too similar, all being witty mouth pieces that would spout whatever clever thing Jaques had in his head. But at least that was funny. Since I stopped reading, about 4 months ago, I hadn't laughed at a single QC in over a year.

So no, giving that comic a fair chance does not necessarily mean someone's going to like it.

Well, I decided to check the site, found their article, read through, and finally came to their conclusion:

VG Cats is a webcomic that should be classified as some sort of fetish. They should be on their own category along fans of "Happy Tree Friends", with sex depravation on top of all the gory violence. Actually, Happy Tree Friends would be an example of how violence can be used in a funny way (albeit not easy to digest by many, including myself). Compare it VG Cats, it fails. VG Cats is perverse, my friend. It's what Buckley is afraid of turning into if he ever decides to lose that last ounce of self-respect. There have been lots of mentions of lack of self-respect in this review. That is because no human should feel proud of creating this comic. It is vile, vile shit. It's like that guy that makes daguerreotypes of actual dead corpses in strange poses. He thinks he's mastering some sort of art type, but he's really just showing the world what a twisted, bizzare individual he is. It's some sort of Rule 34 of gaming comics: for every game that exists, there is some sort of sex or violent twist Ramsoomair can provide.

Don't submit yourself to this comic if you don't think you can stomach it. And even if you do, don't expect much of it.

I'm not as a big of a fan of series as I used to be, but this is all I really have to say on the matter:

Never liked it. From the start I found it horrible, preachy, full of bad characters (Dom himself being an obvious Marty Sue) and just generally awful.

Um... that doesn't make the comic bad.

That makes it a different genre from what kind of comic you want to read.

It'd be like saying Schindler's List was shit because it didn't have enough of C3PO.

Penny-Arcade... they might have occasional funny moments but the fact that there's NO overarching storyline is pathetic. I want characters that learn and grow, not just random disjointed cheap easy jokes. I'm not interested in two and a half men...

You might be my favorite person right about now. Everyone of my friends rants and raves about Penny-Arcade and one is determined to find one that will make me laugh.

Every single one he sends me gets the response of "oh i guess that's kinda witty"

The overarching story is defiantly something that rubs me the wrong way but i could let that slide if they were actually funny on a consistent basis. Making someone laugh on a 5-6 day a week schedule is impossible (you cant please everyone all of the time and such), but when I go months without laughing your web comic seems a bit sub par for the amount of money you are raking in from it.


Also noting basically anything from the mspaint people web comic. Be it homestuck, the one about the demons (i don't know what its called sorry ; , or any of their other work, I might be crazy but i feel like its over hyped to an extreme.


Raging on CAD, honestly, doesn't even concern me there are plenty of people on the internet ready to take up arms against it.

Lots of them most of them I forget, it's easy distribution and is mostly used by inexperienced individual so of course most of them are going to suck. As for popular ones that I don't like Megatokyo the guy started insulting he's fan base for no reason within the comic, he commonly insulted people before then but to make a story about anime fan being a bunch of idiots that cant bring there heads back in to reality is just horrible.

I like some of those.

Off the top of my head Bittersweet Candy Bowl was the webcomic that was so absolutely bad I read the entire thing just as a guide of what to never, ever do when writing my own comics. It's a god-awful mess of abused tropes and utter nonsense. Almost- almost in 'so bad it's good' territory.

I never thought I'd find myself defending CAD but here we go.

The massive degree of internet hate for CAD is, honestly, ridiculous. It isn't a very good strip, I agree. It does a lot of things wrong. But Buckley has been making the same mistakes and making the same stylistic choices for years and, for some reason, people keep reading. Seriously, if you hate it so much, if it has never made you laugh (hyperbole or there's something wrong with your brain. Even CAD has had the occasional good strip. Monkeys and typewriters and all that) then perhaps you should stop reading it. It's like reading Dinosaur comics every day and complaining the art is too static. It's pointless. Buckley is never going to change no matter how much you *****.

And about the whole miscarriage-Cerberus syndrome thing. That was a poor strip, even by CAD standards. It was poorly timed, badly executed and his art wasn't strong enough to pull it off. It was however, something new for him. He has an established, paying, audience who wanted X. He, instead, gave them Y. That's commendable. It didn't work. But fuck, everyone has ideas that don't work or don't turn out how they planned. I find it hilarious that people will rant and rave about how terrible the miscarriage strip was then, in the same breath, criticise him for not trying anything new.

In short, CAD isn't great, I agree. But there's far worse out there. CAD is at least clearly and professionally presented, lots of strips don't even manage that.

I tend to avoid webcomics that are poorly rated by people, but the only comic that really baffles me as to how anyone likes it and one that I think is absolutely terrible is Megatokyo.

Piro's sketchy architecture work is pretty nice. Distracts me from his malformed, bubbled headed characters (lol, hypocrisy) and for a while he managed to tap into that early 00's l33t sp34k fad and sold a dickload of merchandise. Hell I preferred that aesthetic to the manga-ripoff stuff he's done for... oh the past five years.

This about CAD however I kinda like it, it isn't something I keep massive track of but it does get a laugh out of me occationally and that's worth it for the 15 seconds it takes me to read through. (I also enjoy books with lots of words in them!)

Strips I don't like? None really, all the ones i've seen are OK in my eyes and if it makes the artist happy to draw/write then I feel I have no right to complain, i'll just not read it and let them continue on their merry way with the fans they have garnered.

Just the ones I keep track of here:

CAD, Critical Miss (Your comic is great by the way Greg), Name Game, SGVY[footnote]Sparkling Generation Valkyrie Yuuki: Don't ask why I read this one, someone linked it once and I read it all. I don't even watch or read Anime or Manga.[/footnote], and of course Oglaf. (Lots of sex and nudity but funny as hell)

Of the ones that i've read and can remember, Cyanide & Happiness' idea of a joke is basically to make a fart/dead baby/bad pun joke and have your characters wave their hands.

It might just be me, but i don't remember any really bad webcomics.

I find CAD, Penny Arcade and VG Cats to be painfully unfunny.

VG Cats has managed to get an occasional chuckle out of me, but the other two are just... ugh...

Then again, it's easily solved by not reading them. *shrug*

I guess they just don't appeal to my sense of humor, but hey, there are plenty of webcomics that do, so who cares?

I don't really like Penny Arcade. They've got a few good jokes, but they're extremely few and far between. I've read through their entire archive trying to find out why people like it so much, and couldn't find any explanation other than that they were first. I do like the artwork.

I can't think of any Webcomics I consider bad (later Fanboys perhaps, but mainly because they quit updating forever then came back but it just wasn't that good in my opinion).

But I do consider the Bad Webcomics website to be a horrible den of hate. It reminds me of the likes of Uncyclopedia (a website mimicing Wikipedia except all theirs subjects are full of internet memes and insulting jokes about the subjects). Bad Webcomics just isn't a site I would trust for the opinion on a Webcomic, as it is pretty foul and just looking at their main page makes me sigh.

I'd go with CAD. I used to read it, but over time, it just stopped being funny. Personally, I think it might have peaked early on in the comic's run, and now it's just painfully limping along. Also, I find it very difficult to care about (I'm guessing the severely autistic) Ethan and his posse. So I've stopped reading it.

However, to its credit, the artwork has improved rather recently.

For me I always found Bittersweet Candy Bowl to be fairly bad. I tried to get through it. I really did. I spent an hour goin through the archive because there were a couple plot lines that were mildly interestin and I liked maybe one character and kept hopin that it'd all actually become interestin. Never did for me sadly.
