Todays assignment: Name any character that is extremely badass, but is still extremely hate-able, for intentions or just his style. Let it be books, movies, games, or possibly real life. Just be sure to describe properly. I'll start off with naming the one from the book I've been entangled with lately. I've grown a genuine hatred for him so far through the book (haven't finished it completely). And he is: Spider from Anansi Boys. He has the badass powers and the badass style, but then he comes and steals his brothers girlfriend without the girlfriend knowing, and makes me want to punch him in the face with a pair of brass knuckles.

piter de vries, from the prelude to dune series of books. he's a mentat and a skilled assassin, yet he's just a weasel that leeches off the baron and would kill him given the opportunity, though the same is true of any harkonnen. hell, throw the baron in too. he's all-powerful and a tyrant, but he's a fat sack of crap.

Every character in CSI and its bastard children, CSI: New York and CSI: Miami. Every major character is like a multi-volume encyclopedia set, with advanced knowledge in all fields from chemistry to history to music theory. I mean, that's not so bad by itself, and it's actually pretty cool when they solve nigh-impossible cases with their wits.

But then, every other line they say to villains, minor characters and basically any character not on par with their level of intellect are snappy, self-righteous statements.

Example:

Killer: So where did I go wrong? (asking about how they managed to figure out that he was the murderer)

Witty douchebag: You killed a man.

Har Har Har. Fucking twat.

That owl in Peggle.

It's really cool to see him pull some shot out of his ass with his powerup, but he's a complete bastard when it comes to playing against him.

Dante from Devil May Cry. He pulls off some amazing moves, yet he's a stereotypical prick.
I thought of him, but I forgave him cause his badass style eliminated all hate I could have for him. Although, whenever I read Anansi Boys, I imagine Spider as Dante, cause they have so similar personalities (except that Dante isn't a mooch who steals girlfriends).

That was going to by my answer, Hasimir Fenring is a close second in that category.

Definately Reaver from Fable 2.
Oh god, hell yes.
Especially that BS he pulls at the end.
I couldn't find anyone better for this position. He isn't even badass, he's just a really, really narcissistic prick.

The only time he ever amused me was when he killed the sculptor for making his nose too big.

Indeed, I would've shot the guy myself if the game had let me.

I sort of agree here. some of the character i didn't mind, like grissom and the lead guy in CSI:NY, but the guy i hate the most is the police guy in new york, the one that had the really bad hair in the first series, and dated rachael in friends. you know, the one your mum fancies. he's a complete fascist towards anybody who isn't a victim or a cop, and he treats suspects who didn't actually kill a man as if they actually did, even after their innocence is proved, and he's not apolagetic in the slightest if he slips up.

What a twat.

Stephen King, unless I'm mistaken, couldn't tell you the name though, curse my bad memory.

I'd go with... Raiden from MGS2. Sweet moves but a whiney complaining ****... And possibly MGS4, sure he's a badass ninja owning shit left right and centre, but he's hearing high heels and has long nails, plus Raiden WAS a whiney complaining *****.

The Stand of course.

I cannot hate him of course. He's just too badass to hate. Not to mention, I think he's just a personification of everything that is evil in people.

Batman. No, really. You could make a reasonable case for Batman being the ultimate badass, especially with all the new media coming out. That doesn't change the fact, however, that he's an arrogant, condescending nutcase who eventually alienates everyone who ever cared about him because he insists on planning how to kill them from the moment they met him, just in case.

Of course, this is all highly dependant on the writer. Batman can come off as a psycho pompous nutjob in one issue and a cool, calculating genius in another. Totally circumstantial.

Iron Man, on the other hand, is pretty much universally hate-able. He's so badass that he build a working suit of power armor in a cave with a box of old scraps. Still, he's extremely arrogant, aloof and, in those rare moments when he's being serious, holier-than-thou up the wazoo.

Hooray!
NCIS, however is a better show.

It's funnier.

I refuse to watch CSI:Whatever the hell.

Master chief isnt even a character he has no dialogue, any silent protagonist is not a character but a robot that you control, just an emotionless skin you fill out. Gordon freeman, mario, I was going to say pacman but he has character in pacman world 2 where he lets his emotions out and expresses himself with unique mannerisms. Its not even like you control him in that game as much as you give him instructions and he follows them to the best of his ability (if he feels like it).
Um, that is what a game is about? Ordering them around with a controller. And Master Chief is a character, he talks, he just doesn't execute the dialogue extremely well.
