so i ordered baldurs gate 1 & 2 online and got the expansions with them, and they are coming tommorrow

quick question, are there any specific mods i should check out? or patches?

and is the first one worth playing through? or should i go directly to 2?

(i got it all dirt cheap packaged so just got it all)

im running windows vista too if that matters at all, everything else should be up to snuff for my pc to be fine for it

I only ever ran them Vanilla, with no unofficial patches.

just a headsup, if you want to have the canon make sense between 1 and 2, make sure you stick with Minsc, Jaheira, Khaleid, and Imoen. As those characters are the assumed canonical companions of the character from BG1. I won't tell you who those characters are as I don't want to spoil it, but they're generally good aligned.

number one is good, although a bit cheesy sometimes, the spells are weaker and you get a limited number of spells, but its worth to play number 1 for the story line as you will have fuck no idea whats happening in the second one.

I never used mods, was happy enough to play it rough.
I would download a patch of bioware website, or you will get "is busy" error when trying to talk to some NPCs.

happy playing ^__^

When I played through I named my character "Goldberg" and used a picture of the wrestler Goldberg as my player portrait. Really added to my fun.

I'd say try out 1 first, if you can't get into it, move on to 2. Try 'em vanilla first, the way they're supposed to be played, THEN try patches/add ons.

Slightly off-topic, but where did you get them from? I've been doing light searches (whenever I can remember that I want them) but haven't had any luck.

I wouldn't go to mental with mods your first time around. It's a really good game, let it speak for itself. To be honest though i don't even know what mods there are for that game.

there's a mod that combines BG and BG2 into one continuous game, rather then 2 separate ones, and there are different character kits that you can download.

I really REALLY can't stress enough that the ONLY mod that should be used the first time through is the widescreen mod. if you have widescreen monitor, of course.

Well it is based on Table top DND, your not the Dragon Age mage who needs 10 second to throw down 5000 spells with never blinking.

It's a great game in the times where you were the hero but also a human and had limits. Good game!

Real Dnd. Limited spells, HP, and expect to be camping after every fight. Your the hero just not the Cloud/god of war/ kill 100000 things in 30 seconds kinda hero.

The weakest army defeats the Strongest hero.- Con

Baldur's Gate Trilogy is the name of the mod. Combine all into one big game. thats not just small thing, you play BG1 in BG2 engine. better graphics, hud and higher resolution.

Opinions vary, however if you want to play through the whole series with the same character I recommend any mod that lets you use the BG2 kits in BG1. The reason for this is that in BG1 you can't select kits for your character or add them to an imported character in BG2. This puts you at something of a disadvantage unless your multi-classed.

Also for all comments about companions one neat trick you can do is create your own party from scratch by using the multiplayer game option, running it locally, and only using yourself. Now this DOES mean you miss NPC-centric subquests and dialogue, but it can be quite fun especially in BG 2. It's also possible to use a combination of recruits and self-made characters by simply not creating the entire party. This is all without mods (it's just something people missed about the game).

that is where i found it if that helps!

and thanks for these suggestions, ill try and look into getting that continuous one, where it updates graphics and the engine, that'd be a nice mod i'd like, otherwise i love playing games straight up at first, just wanted to know if the game would 'work' right without any mod that might make it run smoother or help in these modern times

BG1 Tutu is pretty much the only mod that's 'essential'. Doesn't change anything story-wise, simply imports the content from Baldur's Gate 1 into it's sequels much improved engine, allowing for more class and race options at the start, higher resolution visuals, smoother gameplay and the like.

You can download the Tutu mod from this website.

The BG1 banter pack which you can find a link to from the above site is also extremely well done, adding more dialogue into the first game to make it more in-line with the second game. And all the characters are well represented, the dialogue sharp, all very well done. But that's optional. I would recommend it myself, but some prefer the first playthrough to be completely 'pure' as it were and the banter pack 'does' change things somewhat, although all in the name of a more cohesive story.

But those are the only two I'd suggest for a first playthrough. Tutu especially!

Enjoy!

I actually played the second one first, and it made sense to me. I did like the first one, though, as it felt kind of closer to a D&D game.

Incidentally, I went with a Monk. By the end of the game, he had quite literally no weaknesses. 80+% magic resistance, 4 attacks a round, armor class close to minus 10, double movement speed, paralysis attacks, and a sword that let me cast mirror image and make it even harder to hit him.
