I LOVE BATMAN, but my friend and I recently got into an argument about how awesome he really is. I believe that he is amazing because he beats the crap out of villains, and he doesn't have any super powers. My friend states that he is a crappy hero because he doesn't have super powers, and his main villains are just lunatics with guns (Penguin, Two-Face, Joker, Thorne etc.). My question to you escapist is what do you think of Batman? Do you think he is an awesome crime fighter, or a little girl that who would never be able to take down a villain of Superman or the X-Men?
Batman is the only one who can kill Superman if he goes rogue.
Or any number of high-power magic types.

Batman has two powers to be exact

He has the commonly over looked power of Deus Ex Machina in where he always repeat ALWAYS has exactly what he needs when he needs it and never even has to go home to get it, he has it on him, no matter how ridiculous the idea of him having that particular item is.

His second power is that he's just as insane as his villains, only somehow his insanity makes him out to be some weird ass super hero.

That being said I could appreciate him as a hero if it weren't for that first power, Deus Ex Machina. Unfortunately for him it just comes off as being completely ridiculous most of the time.

So I guess, No I don't like Batman, but i could if he was written better.

It's Batman. He's Deus Ex Machina personified. It's kind of irritating, but you can never beat him. Ever.

Unless you're Kratos, of course. When fate itself(s) decides to fuck with him, he kills fate(s). He's like a Deus Exit Machina! And that's cool.

It's a rather cynical youth who insists hero's need superpowers to be worth anything.

The short answer: Batman is awesome with an awesome writer and horrible with a horrible writer.

The longer answer: he is an awesome crime fighter who some other writers and fans give GOD MODE to because they love him so much, which IMO spoils the character. I can't comment on him in his own series since I'm not very familiar with them. However, I started hating him in later tie-ins and the Justice League over the years, since he became pretty much capable of doing anything the writers wanted him to do. Considering he's supposed to be the 'realistic' superhero, or perhaps because he is, he has the greatest superpower of all, which is to be so crazy-prepared/equipped to have countermeasures for this or that problem. I like Batman as a fit, well-equipped and well-trained expert who thinks quickly on his feet, not the living incarnation of Deus Ex Machina.

Wrong. Green Lantern. Actually any of them if they were to use kryptonite like Batman would.
Supes tells Bats he's the only one who can out think him and kill him.

Much as I love GL.

I think you're forgetting that, even better than superman's villains, he has actually beaten superman before [http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/superjoker/news/?a=8190]. And he's not just badass because he kicks ass, he's badass because he's a billionaire ninja detective with a dark past that kicks so much ass he had to invent special shoes that resist shit smell and he could BECAUSE HE'S THE GODDAMN BATMAN.

...*****.

batman has the most powerfull superpower there is. HIS BRAIN
No, that is Lex Luthor. Batman has money, gadgets, and martial arts. Maybe not super, but those are his powers. He is still the most badass. Only one that hasn't died! WIN!

he's OK i suppose, the fact he is just a regular bloke is cool but if it was Batman VS Magneto, Batman would be screwed. sure if the fought in the middle of the desert Batman would may win due to better hand to hand combat skills but in the middle of a terrorised town...bye bye Batman!

Hmph, Batman is awesomest superhero (since Rorschach) compared to those other SUPERheroes with their magical made-up abilities. Batman has no super powers which makes him the coolest in my book. "Oh look i come from another planet and have only one weakness bla, blah, blah"-bullshit is just lame.

Batman is a very interesting and complex character.

Your friend is confusing powerful with Awesome. The Beyonder was the most powerful character that I can think of, and unspeakably lame.

Batman's humanity is what makes him worth reading.

part of the awesomeness of batman is that it is all realistic to a degree! the fact that he is just a man makes him so much more awesome than somebody with powers.

to put this into perspective, who do you think is more awesome, a homeless man who gives 50% of his earnings every day to charity, or a billionaire who gives 2% of his fortune to charity?
The homeless man is more generous, as he gives larger portions of his money to charity, despite desperately needing it. To the billionaire, the money he donates is nothing.

One out of one is a more generous gift than ten out of thousands.

OT: In many of the crossovers between Superman and Batman, you see them both fighting the same enemies, and Batman commonly saving Superman, along with other superpowered people.

You my friend, are correct, Batman fits into a certain category of heroes that fight more street level baddies, in my opinion the Joker is one of the few villains who can actually scare the living crap out of me. Batman is better then other heroes like Superman (not that there's anything wrong with Superman, he can kick some major ass too) because he doesn't have powers he puts his life in actual danger, a single bullet is absolutely nothing to Superman, but could kill Batman in an instant. I advised you the next time your at a good bookstore to pick up a copy of The Dark Knight Returns or Batman; Hush vol 1. both are prime examples of which Batman beats the Man of Steel.
