I played it for about 30 minutes, and my initial impression was to go right back to Bad Company 2, because this feels like a step backwards. Gameplay wise, its the same old shit - however, the maps on offer are a disaster of poor design and the gameplay here has changed far too much to be called a true sequel to the terrific Battlefield 2. This is what everyone feared it would be: Battlefield of Duty.

Visually, everything has a... sheen to it. Character models have strange illumination highlights that make them look like plastic, and it really underplays the detail on offer. Its kind of blurry, but in a strange way that Bad Company 2 didn't have, that makes the package frankly unattractive. The graphics aren't "bad" - all the detail you love is there - they're simply not very nice to look at thanks to some poor design choices.

Control wise, everything feels like its floating around and unattached. Bad Company 2 had real weight to your character, gun and movement. You felt like a physical person in a physical place. Battlefield 3, on the other hand, feels like there's no feedback to your movement and gun play in real way. It's all very... subtle, but it adds up. It clearly been done to make the game "smoother" for the CoD crowd, where you're bunny hoping around, and frankly it takes away from what Battlefield was originally about. Considering we're still supposed to sit back and hide from snipers and scoped rifles (read: everyone) the fact that you now move like an energiser bunny really begs the question: are we playing a fast paced action game, or a slower paced tactical shooter? You can't have it both ways.
This is probably my biggest complaint with the actual game: it just doesn't FEEL good to play.

Presentation wise, everything is just too "IN YOUR FACE". Kill a guy, BOOM, neon lights across the bottom of your screen for 10 seconds. The kill tracker in the corner is about 5 sizes too big, and it honestly distracts from the actual game part of the experience. The menus are nice, however you can't cancel out of anything. You have to wait until your in a game to actually do anything. This results in a lot of standing around initially, and a lot of unrequired deaths. This leads me to the biggest issue with the whole thing:

The Battlelog crap is a deal breaker for me. And considering I installed Origin, that should really tell you something.
It's cumbersome, invasive, difficult to understand because they've decided to ignore basically every industry standard for menus, and it in no way improves upon the experience of the end user. On top of this, its slow, glitchy as fuck (Server is full? It has 15/32 players!) and is poorly laid out, badly designed and the simple look of it all is just unattractive.

I was actually on the fence about Battlefield 3, leaning towards an early purchase. Thanks to the open beta, I know to keep Bad Company 2 installed and just ignore this CoD wannabe that feels the need to tie you into your internet browser on top of EA's Origin. Honestly, whats the point of having a fucking program required to install and play the game, if you're just going to then send your players to the internet before they can even actually launch the fucking game?

DICE and EA literally just handed Activision Blizzard the prize they were so badly trying to steal away. Battlefield 3 is the end of the series; it's all CoD from here.
Sad, considering all the hype they tried to build for it.

Disappointing. It's trying to copy Modern Warfare when it should have kept a lot of the elements from Battlefield 1943 and 2, and ditch the ugly motion sickness inducing Bad Company.

I think DICE would have been better off not putting out a beta at all. MoH beta really killed that game's potential to be a good seller....Overall..I'd say meh..not getting it. It's cod...but with tacticalness shoe horned in. It's trying to be fast paced with team playing involved. Unfortunately not everyone can keep up and you just get a clusterfuck. Two competing ideas, both with their own fans, one very wishy washy game. Off my buy list.

i'm not big multiplayer fps person, i played PS3 version. i got in, shoot some people, then died, then shoot some more, usually in general direction where everyone was shooting, it's so hard to make out who is who at first glance. i liked first part of map more it's open and bright the merto part suck it's so dark and hectic. it was ok nothing new.

I tried it on Xbox, and wow is it ugly.

I died like 8 times before ever seeing a person, and it felt like the game was supposed to be a pixel hunt. Which is impossible due to the horrid graphics and lack of a scope on all guns but the sniper.

Also why do I have to unlock basic functionality for my classes? And where are all of the vehicles?

And falling through maps is stupid. The game has to ship in like 25 days. There just isn't enough time for them to have a chance in hell at fixing this mess.

Origin seems really unnecessary, to be honest. I'm not even using it at all, it's just like some random program that I need to have on while playing Battlefield, since all the server lists are on a seperate browser instead of on Origin.

Speaking of server lists, I hate how it's on a browser. It's just inconvenient, especially since now there's no main menu for me to tweak graphics settings without being in-server.

Plus, there's a shitton of graphical incompatibilities and optimization errors. My Nvidia drivers keep crashing when I enter fullscreen, and I have the latest drivers, so I basically have to play in a shitty little window.

On top of that, I fucking DESPISE the killcam. Not only does it simply jam the camera into the face of the person that killed you, but it also doesn't allow you to go to the pause menu, change your class, or loadout, or anything while you're dead.

Other than all that bullshit...

...Yeah, the game is basically just if bad company 2 and modern warfare 2 had a baby with better animation.

Pretty fun, but I doubt I have much stake in what's good and bad. Pretty much my first Battlefield MP game ever.

Arg, all the people treating this beta with old, basically alpha software as some kind of full-blown demo is just...

*ahem*

Seriously people:
- This is a beta test.
- It's using a shitty, even older version of the game, pretty much alpha software. It has shitty graphics, ridiculous bugs, you name it.
- This is not for your enjoyment. This is for reporting glaring bugs and testing the servers.
- This beta has only one map, two for the lucky ones.
- If you don't like certain features, don't just complain here, report them. You're a beta tester, you're supposed to do that.
- It's a goddamn beta test.

Now that doesn't change some very basic design ideas some people don't seem to like, like the graphical direction, and that's fine. But fuck, some of the complaints here, it's like some people thought it's already October 25th.

25 days to fix the fundamental issues present here? DICE took 6 months to address Bad Company 2's issues, and dropped that game before they managed to get a third of the way through the list.

The complaints raised are entirely valid. I've posted my feedback for them to ignore on their Battlelog Facebook thing.

In every game I go into it thinking, "Am I having fun?" The answer was sadly, "no". I played for an hour last night, an hour and a half this evening with my cousin, and I was just miserable the whole time.
Teammates can make or break your experience. I've loved it when I had at least 3 (yes, just three) decent, thinking teammates. If your team is bad, you'll hate it. Everybody should try to find at least one friend to play with, otherwise it'll probably be a rage fest.
Yeah, I've found this to be the case. When both teams are working well I enjoy myself. However, when the game is released it will be frustrating to play in some games because everyone is getting the feel for the new map and other gameplay related things.

I really like it - alot better than Call of duty.
Problem is, im really bad at it. heh.
Its kinda buggy. Sometimes ill find myself at a loading screen forced to goto the xbox dash cause it simply wasn't loading.

Overall, I'd be OBSESSED with it. if i didnt suck at it.

Love the game, hate how I have to use goddamn beta drivers for my gpu...
Seeing as the goddamn beta drivers keep crashing.

And the fact that after a match the game hogs all the CPU usage and get a mayor ass memory leak upping 1million...

I'm just waiting for my computer to fry.
I love computer users today, 'these BETA drivers and this BETA game are not working perfectly, argh'. If only they had some sort of term that prepared users for the fact that software is not finished yet and may not be perfect...

I knew it would blow hard, and I once right yet again.

I get it, Beta is all testing and shit, but if you're going to put an open Beta you should be prepared for a shitload of people playing. The amount of lag is fucking horrendous. I never had that issue with Call Of Duty. I want to like it, I really do, but fix the fucking lag in your fucking games EA.
Bad Company 1 Demo lagged
Bad Company 2 Beta lagged
Bad Company 2 Online Demo lagged
Battlefield 3 Beta lagged.

No other game on my PC or Ps3 has lagged as bad as these games have.
I got to agree there as someone who played the original Bad Company demo it was so fucking laggy, don't even get me started about the knife animation.....in both the demo and game.

I don't understand how I am lagging when my connection is this like...17MB download and 6MB upload. o_O

The graphics look pretty enough to me on my old Xbox. Im hearing mixed reviews on the graphics so im wondering if they appear differently for some people.

I know what you mean about stupid unlock system. It's pretty much stopped me playing the beta on my own since I need to play the same map about 20 times just to unlock basic functuality for all classes since im not that great at this.

And what is with the flashlight? I have been trying to unlock it but apparently a flashlight is far more valuable than scopes and higher level guns.

I don't care about the whole graphics issue but this Beta is balls-crazingly buggy, and to make a comparison of a beta that wasn't as bad, and was more used carefully to sort out balance issues which is actually what a Beta should be, Halo: Reach did a waaay better job at Beta than BF3.

AS for the official Beta itself Battlefield 3 is eerily way too close to feeling like CoD, *ducks under flame shield* but again this is only because the vehicles aren't in it, and they are pretty much what defines a BF game to me, otherwise it just feels like a more smoother and more reasonably paced CoD shooter *ducks into Flame bunker* and to be honest i think coDs going to be the better game this summer *....* sorry i ran out of things that can protect me against the flames.

But Battlefield 3 isn't without merits. the game looks fucking gorgeous, however marred by the fact that i played it on 360, it's not as good as it could be or live up to the pre-rendered trailers and hype about the fucking graphics. but god this game looks better than real life. except death matches aren't real and any retard that believes that this stuff happens in real life are idiots.
*ends rant*

Bloody glitchy, sound randomly goes occasionally see thin lines of light wherever guns were fired. Ragdoll physics are funny though. Still fun though (shame about no vehicles).

It's an older alpha build? Then how could it possibly be labeled as a beta?

I'm very confused.
betas are meant to test the stress on the servers, and some balancing tweaks.

Played it a bit on PC and 360 (didn't try PS3 as I heard it was lag-tastic and my internet capped).
PC was excellent. Can't play for shit because I suck, but I liked it.
Xbox 360... that's another story. I could play it fine solo (still sucked as mentioned above), but if I joined a squad with a friend, I couldn't even get moving. The game would start, but no one could move. Only jump, crouch, lie down and look around.

Overall, I'm not a big FPS fan, probably wouldn't buy the game anyway, but it was fine for a few kicks. I'd probably like it better if I could get playing with my friend to work.
