Battlefield 3 Relieving Windows XP From Duty

I'm pretty okay with BF 3 maybe not supporting an OS that will be ten years old when the game comes out. I agree that it's not entirely the same thing as, say, supporting Windows 98 in a 2008 release, as it's merely about different DirectX versions, but from what I get, developing for DirectX 1x has become less of a pain in the ass than it used to be, the result is more compatible GPU-wise. And if you want those perks (plus some others), you can either develop two hugely different versions of the same game (which costs a lot of money) - or you just let DX9 die.

Pointless clinging to XP is part of what is holding PC gaming back. And don't think I'm only talking about graphics. If you want a "glorious" return to PC gaming but also want to hold onto a 10 year old operating system, you're part of the problem.

The escapist has recently imbued within me a habit of using this emoticon "XD" a lot.

XD is not too different from XP.......infact XP looks siller and hence i couldn't read that article with a straight face.....WTF escapist? what have you done to me? cannot unsee?

OT: Why are people so attached to XP (oh God, this is serious)? It was great at the time and i loved using it like everyone else. But if i have to look at that obnoxious Green and Bright Blue taskbar for one more second from this point in my life, i will shoot myself. Why did we use that? it looked disturbing! Hence: Get 7. It is good. It is stable, friendly and smooth (On the PCs you need nowadays to game ANYWAY) If you skipped Vista, good for you. Either way, get 7.
XP is......(oh shit, WHY AM I GRINNING!)

We all knew it was going to start happening more and more eventually. Just the way it is, can't cling to old OSes forever. Still feel bad to those who are not yet able to upgrade to 7.

Excuse me for being so amazingly stupid that I continue to use Vista at the moment.
Alright, begrudgingly, you're excused. But, now that you know, you can't really feign stupidity anymore.
Beware, everyone! We have an INTERNET TOUGH-GUY IN THE ROOM!!!

But seriously, I'd truly like to defend Vista here.... if it wasn't for the fact that it single-handedly slaughtered my $500 gaming laptop.

I haven't yet had the privilege of owning W7 yet, but from the test models and such I've tried out at stores it seems to be a much more lightweight and powerful operating system. When I finally finish my desktop gaming rig, I'm pretty sure I'll be opting for 7 instead of Vista.

Well Vista runs fine now, its had some major patches and indeed a service pack or two applied to it and its been brought into line. And since BF3 will support Vista, a man with a well configured Vista machine will enjoy his BF3 on launch. XP users now have some reason to upgrade, and believe me, its a quantum leap.

Lets not be too unkind to WinXP though. It has seen us through ten years of solid computer gaming and use and lets give it a fond send off to it can relax.

I dont think people are still using XP (excluding schools and comapny,s) MS dropped support a few years ago and you cant buy it anymore

And once you do upgrade to Win 7, buy Just Cause 2.

Honestly, old news, and probably somewhat irrelevant by now. Shattered Horizon did DirectX 10 only ages ago. Over half of the Steam users surveyed are Directx 10 ready, only 5% is DirectX 11 ready.

XP is a old OS now with no DX10 support, new games are going to all run off DX10 in the near future. Its time people let go of what is a antiquated OS. Win 7 is better in every way.

Besides console devs dont make games for their previous gen consoles any more. So why would PC devs make games to run on the previous gen of OS.

This was done ages ago with Shattered Horizon. It supports DX10 only, which unfortunately limited it's sales, but it looks really really nice.

XP is 10 years old, anyone who expects support for it might as well still expect support for their dreamcast.

Vista and 7 both support more stuff than XP does, could they get it running on XP? Sure but as I said, you won't be seeing Black Ops being put on the Dreamcast. (yes I'm aware DC is 9/9/99 but it's more to the point.

So while this is a gamble for DICE to potentially alienate a good quarter of its potential market, it is probably a calculated one: There's a good chance that the hardcore gamers who would play a game like Battlefield 3 are the ones that have already upgraded to an OS like Vista or Windows 7.
I question the intelligence of anyone running Vista over 7, currently. If your PC can run Vista, it can run 7 better. Plain and simple.
Your intelligence questioning is perfectly logical but can also be explained easily - it's probable that, for the majority of people running Vista (such as myself), the computer came with Vista already installed and, evidently, we are too lazy or tight to cough up the money to upgrade to 7, regardless of the ridiculous improvement in performance and usability.

Funny how nobody has mentioned Halo 2 yet. That game required Vista to be installed, now THAT was unfair at the time.

If not, well, it'll also be coming out on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Better than nothing, right?
Actually that would be worse then nothing because being on consoles is a dragging down the quality of the whole game.
Haha, you wish. Man I love elitist on both sides of this constant console war, it's funny to watch their poorly defended arguments when they can't just take a nice cup of coffee and sit down and play the game. I feel sorry for them for being unable to do that, honestly.

As for the thread, XP is old and needs to be retired, so this call by Dice was appropriate. And typically XP computers lagged out matches a bit, so this way matches should be improved.
