Battlefield 3 Will Require Origin

I sincerely hope Battlefield 3 bombs out. Games publishing companies are being silly and malicious toward their customers; forcing us to do things we don't really want to in order to play their games. I'm gonna sit this game out, and I hope a huge number of PC gamers do so too.

Ok, first I deleted Ubisoft's "Ghost Recon Future Soldier" from my list because they made it a console port instead of a different version like GRIN's GRAWs. Now I deleted BF3 because of this Origin thing and will simply buy it for my PS3, which provides me a flawless online experience in my country rather than official network platforms on PC. Bethesda only needs to screw TES V Skyrim and I'm done with PC gaming. Because I sure won't start using Steam.

The thing is, I wasn't interested in Origin in the first place, because EA made it just to get a piece of the online distribution pie. Now they say that nobody will be able to play Battlefield without using it, presumably because they realized that everyone's already in love with Steam and nobody's going to care enough to switch over. Well, piss to you EA. It's not like I can't just watch videos of it, and if it really is THAT GOOD, then I'll fork up the money to buy it. I won't touch Origin though, Steam is my precious...

It doesn't make that much of a difference to me if Origin is running in the background, since OMG It's totally not like when I run a game through steam, it does the EXACT SAME THING (and for the people complaining that they don't want Origin and Steam running in the background at the same time, there's this crazy possibility to umm...turn off the program that you aren't using at the moment. Herf.
Although I am a bit surprised. As far as I could tell, the way origin worked was that you didn't need it running in the background of a game when you play. I mean, I assume that there would be some connection to the EA server or whatnot for stats collection and such, but still.
Meh.

Also- For those who say they're going to the consoles because of this, really? I mean, I'm not complaining too much, if this is enough to make you ragequit the PC version, I'd rather not play with you in any actual games, but it just seems to me that it's a bit of an overreaction in my opinion.

I understand EA in this. It's about time Valve got some competition on the market of digitally distributing games in a separate client. I know there are several sites that does this, but the client system that simplifies it. I just wish EA didn't do a terrible job of it. I understand EA and admire what they are trying to do, but I hate Origin. It doesn't change my opinion of Battlefield 3. I am still considering it, but I have to admit that I would be more likely to buy it if it came to Steam. Their loss I guess.

You needed EADM to download Mirror's Edge DLC and Mass Effect 1 DLC, and if you played Battlefield 2142 you had to use it.

This is what you say now, but weeks later, since you were forced to give your email address to Origin and that you have to deal with their splash page ads every time you log in, eventually something will catch your eye and then you're hooked, baby.

Download services will effectively be like consoles, and we will be forced to deal with their bs because they will be much more pervasive when their services do not require any personal investment.

Also. . . every _ single _ PC game _ I own is on STEAM. End of story. I knew what that festering pile of steaming shit the EA Download Manager was, and have never once permitted that viruses existence on my hard drive (much less ever thought about getting Mirror's Edge DLC, ME1 DLC, or BF2142).

Wow really.. "lost sale". It's a 34MB application. Aaand takes less memory than steam(for me atleast). I want to see better arguments other than "not on steam, lost sale" or "EA is evil".

here's a tip: Download Origin and only run it when you need too. Same with steam, close it if you have to.

Sure steam is better, I'm certain Origin will get better (as will steam) so while it may be pants now I doubt it will be forever.

I really think it's not that much of a big deal.

I hate mandatory steam-logins to start up a game. That being said, battlefield games always required a login, which I didn't mind because it allowed me access to my soldiers / equiment / etc. I just hope that this does the same and you don't have to log in twice. And that Origin is fast (coded).

It's already been said but it needs to be said again. Valve's been doing this for a while now. Any outright rejection of it is blatant fanboyism or straight up "fuck the corporations" hate. Then again this is the Escapist so I refer to my first statement.

Does the ridiculous Origin Users Agreement about only having the game for 2 years apply to retail copies as well now?

If it only counts for digitally bought copies I don't really care, as I won't buy it over Origin anyway. Hell if that's the case the rage is just plain silly and a huge overreaction. Guys, you don't have to run Origin constantly, you can just turn it off when you stop playing BF3. You don't have to buy games on it either.

Again; why? You can just don't do anything with Origin, you don't have to buy BF3 on it, you don't have to run it after you stopped playing BF3, and if a poster above us is to be believed it takes less memory than Steam as well when you run it.

All this rage makes so little sense, as long as it isn't going to affect the game, why care about this? You probably won't even know it's there when you're playing!

And I really, really, really wanted Diablo III, BF3, Mass Effect 3, etc. This year might signify my throwing out of this hobby. Before anyone tells me I'm a crybaby, I'm stuck in an apartment with a shoddy connection at BEST, and I'm lucky if even the electricity stays on for a whole gaming session, let alone my internet ok?

Your complaint about Diablo 3 is justified here, as it doesn't have an offline mode. But Steam does, and perhaps Origin as well. If you can't play ME3 offline, if it requires Origin, then yes you'll be right as well. Before that, relax and wait for more information. Good gods people this isn't such big of a deal!

PC gamer here who doesn't care. The only thing that bothers me at all is Origin closing down and my game becoming unplayable, but by which time (if it ever happens) I'll have long stopped caring about the game anymore. Yeah its a bit of a nuisance and I'd rather have it on Steam, but you guys are all crybabies tbh.

Slightly offtopic question here but will I be able to buy a physical copy and unlock it on Origin like with Steam, or will I need to buy it through the Origin store?

I'll add my voice to the chorus of those who don't see what the big deal is. This is EXACTLY the same thing that Valve did with Half-Life 2 and you might think that Steam is pretty shit-hot now but believe me, it was a piece of crap when it launched. So why is it okay for one but not the other?

Because Valve hasn't got a reputation for being an evil company.

EA held that throne for a long time, and has only recently (just) lost it to Activision. I have no reason to trust them.

Valve is earning one, and it's because of Steam.

I like playing LAN games with my brothers and having programs like Steam and Origin don't help so much. The first COD MW was stand alone and allowed us to just pass the disc around. When I Saw "Requires Steam" on the Black Ops box I just sat there felt like "Well shit I guess I'll play this alone then..." I can think of how many games on Steam that I'd like to LAN it up with my brothers, but just plain can't.
