The game treats you terribly. It forces you to master its dodge mechanic called witch time, you practically have to make your own health but it doesn't provide you with the ingredients, It pulls poorly timed QTE's right out its arse which are so unexpected they are guaranteed to kill you, cutscenes introducing bosses usually end with the boss using an attack which you have less than half a second to dodge when you return to gameplay, the combat is unsatisfyingly terrible, the story is piss on ice-cream, the characters totally unlikeable, Bayonetta is one of the ugliest game characters ever concieved in every possible way and it rates you at the end of every level, marking you down for being hit, using items and dying.......so yeah it's pretty shit......just wait for the new castlevania.
i'm going to have to mostly agree with this. the "mastery of dodge" is a severe pain in the ass. i personally like the character and all the cheesiness in the game, the story for the like 6 hours i played was meh. i think the game gets in its own way too much. another fun idea, delivered poorly i think. i got so frustrated with it after i bought it for $40 at gamestops gamedays sale, i returned it for a measly $18 store credit a week and a half later. oh and i was playing on easy, its not that its hard...its that damn dodging bullcrap

So with GoW3 pushed to the back of the shelf for a while im looking for a a strong action, beatumup, violent game. Bayonetta is a title that i've had in my hands like ten time but never bothered to buy or rent. I've heard unexpectedly good things about the game on sites and reviews, but wanted to know if any of the escapists clan has actually played it for a good amount of time and what they thought of it.

Is the combat as good as they say it is? Can I get a vague overview of the storyline without too many spoilers? I could care less about jiggle physics or sexual content(cough)...but seriously I'm just looking for a new solid action title. And yes my local movie rental store does not carry it. I was about to buy it used for $29 but alas i once again put it down.
If you've played and enjoyed Devil May Cry 3 or 4, then get it. The combat is a far more fluid version of the DMC combat style and I personally enjoy it more than the GoW style button-mashing. Just be aware that that sort of frantic mashing won't get you very far and you will actually need to learn and practice combos just like in DMC.

I'm kinda iffy on it. My friend's in love with it, but it looks like total bullshit to me. The voice acting makes me wanna claw my eyes out, and the script is ridiculously stupid. And I hate how it forces all this sexuality on you. I mean, I don't care if there's some skin, but if entire game mechanics orbit around it, it can be really annoying.

Then again, the action look pretty freakin' sweet. To be expected from the creator of DMC though.

I own it, and I couldn't put it down. I despise DMC and GoW, as I find them boring, but I LOVED this game! It also allows you to buy alternate costumes after beating the game, adding some replay value.

the story is basically thus( I haven't touched the game in a while, so take it with a grain of salt): Bayonneta is an Umbral Witch, the last of her kind, fighting against the Lumen Sages, who use angels to do battle, while the Umbral Witches made contracts with demons... Man I need to play this game again, I can't remember the rest... INSANE final boss fight though.

Bayonetta is full of sexual energy and she's not afraid to flaunt what she has. She is OOZING 1960-70's sexual empowerment. MovieBob(aka The Game Overthinker) and The Escapist itelf reviewed the games, I'll give ya links!

Here's the Escapist's review: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/7024-Review-Bayonetta

Here's MovieBob's character analysis of Bayonetta herself: http://gameoverthinker.blogspot.com/2010/02/episode-32-i-heart-bayonetta.html

By all means though, I highly recommend this game! One of the few games I bought brand new, and felt was worth my full $60. It's not TOO short either, my first playthrough on Normal was around 20 hours, and once I tried on hard, after keeping my stats and weapons, I STILL Got slaughtered. On the first level...
