In terms of narrative complexity there is no doubt in my mind that End of Evangelion is the greatest animated film of all time (and probably the greatest work of cinema period).
8 1/2 does the whole dreamy self-analysis thing better than End of Evangelion. I found End of Evangelion too heavy, pessimistic and full of itself. I preferred the TV show.
Thanks for the name drop, I'll check it out.

I know that EoE isn't for everyone, but I love it's stream of consciousness style. I'm still baffled by how almost every scene is filled with symbolic meaning. I found it to be one of those rare films that marry deep philosophical thought with raw emotion.

It's interesting reading through the list and seeing the common themes. There are quite a few movies on the list that I didn't enjoy watching. To clarify, I was not entertained and didn't walk away from it feeling like I had grown as a person.

For the sake of brevity, these are the movies I saw and didn't enjoy.
100: Req
83: AI
33: TDK
21: Grand Budapest
13: Children of Men
5: Boyhood

There were other movies on that list that I haven't seen, because they just aren't my cup of tea
