Wait a sec, so people sleep under a sheet? I always figured it was just, doonahs(comforter?), blankets, or nothing. A sheet wouldn't be very warm to sleep under, and if it's hot, I can't see sleeping under it then either.
Every set of bed linens I've ever bought has had a fitted sheet and then a thinner sheet that goes over that. Maybe its an American thing? Everyone I know has their bed setup in a similar fashion.
Perhaps its a pass down from history. Back when comforters had to be used to provide maximum warmth but not necessarily the best in comfort. I imagine having a thinner sheet in between you and a heavy wool blanket would make sleeping a nicer experience.
As for me, sometimes when its excessively hot I'll sleep under only the bed sheet. Sleeping under something makes falling asleep easier for me, I'm not sure why.
Aaaacctually, I just google'd what a doonah was since I've never heard of it. Apparently a donnah replaces the need for bed sheets all together. What I'm calling a comforter is also call an elderdown (according to wikipedia at least). That could explain some of the confusion.
